  2. One of my favorite posts on any forum ever was one in which you stated, "I go to restaurants to eat, not to read."

  3. I just recommended a thunder to a friend based on what you have posted here in the past. He went and shot one and bought one on the spot. Fits his needs perfectly. Shows that everyone has different circumstances. Most important thing is to pick something you WILL carry.

  4. I spend a week with my mom every other month, and we eat out every day. I go where she wants. That includes Panera, Outback, Cracker Barrel , all three of which have had anti-gun issues in one form or another. Probably some other places. Of course the Kahr in my pocket doesn't care. - OS

  5. INTRODUCTION -   Hey folks,   Looking through the Survival & Preparedness forum index, I do not see too many discussions on entry level radio communications.   One comment up front (stolen from DaveS) -  "Practicing" for SHTF situations still calls for LAWS to be followed.".  So, if it needs a license to operate....get one. Or don't operate the radio equipment described in this thread.   I'll plan on putting some general information together here in this thread, and focusing on the basics of preparing to "get in contact" when the lines are down.     Most of it will be web links to sources that are a lot better than I can do, but will include at least (in no ordained order, yet)  Getting Started in understanding what you can do to prepare, radio waves, frequencies, operating bands & services (HF, VHF, HAM, CB, FRS, GMRS, Commercial, Government, etc), propagation (gets from point-to-point),terrain,distance, TX/RX - transmitters and receivers (a combination of the two are called "transceivers") modes of operation (analog and digital), power (operating sources and transmitting output), Antennas, feedlines (between antenna & radio), and support structures, Operating & Communicating (home, mobile, portable, and use of "repeaters") Thoughts / Sources on Regulatory Guidance (staying out of trouble, minimizing attention to yourself), Reliability, Sustainability, Efficiency, Economy, Resourcefulness  ("Hints & Kinks" - how to do it cheaper and better) Sources and Vendors (places to purchase stuff) "I can Help !"  (identfy your self (w/callsign if able), and any other useful info on how you can help folks) It will not be exhaustive, or even necessarily precise, but will be close enough to get a new-comer started on learning, and identifying folks who can help. It is not meant to act as a all-in-all, but rather as a starter of learning process and a pointer to other resources.   Contributing OPS, please Title Your Post as top of this post (Antennas, Operations, etc and keep it informational as best we can). Lets try to do lengthy sidebar discussions in new threads, not this one. It is not limited to Ham Radio, although it will be a major contributor.

  6. Since I've already posted about this rifle on a couple of the collector forums I frequent I might as well add it here too. For those of you who are not "into" Finnish Mosin Nagants, the M28/30 was the last iteration of the pre-war Finnish Civil Guard's attempts to update and modernize their rifles. It's predecessor was the M28, which gained a reputation for very good accuracy, the M28/30 added to that reputation by it's use in the World Shooting Championships of 1937. Many of the features of the M28/30 were later incorporated into the M39 rifle which was adopted jointly by the Civil Guard and the Finnish army just before the "Winter War" between Finland and the USSR. Production of the M28/30 officially ended in 1940, but some rifles were built during later dates, primarily as the M28/57 and M28/76 marksmanship (or sniper if you prefer) rifles. It is commonly believed that the "late date" M28/30's were made for officer training in marksmanship in the period 1968-1970. Few examples are known today. This is my post from the other forums: " Picked this one up during the holidays, thought it would be a good Christmas present to myself. The rifle was advertised on one of the common listing sites of arms as a "1970 M39". The picture clearly showed it to be in an M28/30 stock although little else could be determined from it. Intrigued, I took the chance and bought it over the phone. The rifle turned out to be a 1970 M28/30, in a post-war (what else) stock. It has a 2-stage trigger, shimmed action, but no barrel sleeve as my other M28/30 does. The tang date shows the receiver to be a 1913 Izhevsk, with the normal mix of various manufacturers stamps on the remaining parts. I knew from other references these late date M28/30's existed, but this is the first one I've come across. Although most of my collecting interest is in WWII and earlier rifles, I like this one a lot."

  7. Ah, I see. Makes sense. One thing misstated though, a receiver with a buttstock attached is still "other firearm", not a "rifle lower". Of course you couldn't put a short barrel on it of course without a stamp, so that's still a valid point. - OS

  12. Nor I. "Didn't mean to", at its furthermost stretch, means ONE shot THe above injuries could be as many as FOUR. IN theory, if you lined it up in a billions to one trajectory, you MIGHT be able to do it with one. "Zero tolerance"? And how did the parent or parents get so slack, either leaving a weapon out for her to take, or her being able to get means to get a weapon? THere's a lot more to this and we won't know very much because she's a minor. GMAFB. SWC

  17. If you can get in a position to clandestinely get the tag number I'd do so. Then have a word with the local police. Surely someone in the congregation has a police contact. It pays to be proactive these days.

  20. Honestly, I’m willing to give the larger entity the benefit of the doubt and chalk this up to the poor decision making of the manager on duty. Almost all of these cases follow the same pattern. MoD screws the pooch, public outcry ensues, higher ups spend time retraining and fixing PR mess.

  21. Hoppes #9 for deep clean I like the CLP products, slowly replacing as I run out of other stuff. Carry a small bottle of Hoppes Elite oil (bottle doesn't leak) in my range bag Whatever gun grease for my CZs. Since I haven't had a failure due to lubrication, I suspect I don't qualify as a high speed operator needing mall ninja products.
