  1. Texted with him a little bit ago. He said they’re unhooking all kinds of stuff and are talking about sending him home this weekend. I haven’t been able to go by because one of my kids has the flu - and there’s no way I’m risking taking that up in there. That said, his spirits seem good and he says he’s feeling okay.

  2. This is the second time I have heard Jared Reston give an account of the incident that nearly took his life but within which he prevailed. This is also the most in-depth version of the account that I've heard him give. It is very much worth watching in its entirety. Yes, it is nearly 2 hours long. Watch it in chunks if you have to, but please, watch it. Very good stuff. It might save your life some day.

  3. Prayers and condolences for his family. Death has no respect of age. Any of use could be gone in the next second. Try to live our lives accordingly.

  5. One of my daughters got her first knife this year. She chose an old school slipjoint sodbuster. I’ve got several GEC models, and I’m always amazed at the quality of their builds. There’s something to be said for a good high carbon steel, too. Despite all of the amazing powdered super steels these days, it’s good to have a blade that is easy to get super sharp and will take on some character over time.

  6. Thanks. I blame this on my family. My Dad was Army, his older brother was a South Carolina state trooper. I've been a cop the last 22 years, my brother joined the Marine Corps. My oldest son is leaving next month for the Marine Corps, and my youngest boy (17) has his mind set on a career with the Army Rangers. I don't guess we'll be breaking this line anytime soon.

  10. TDAmeritrade has some great software (LOVE Think or Swim), Sogotrade has the absolute lowest prices I've seen (3-bucks per trade), but no human help. Fidelity is pretty good, my current employer's account is over there.... ... If you're looking for "active" investing, I'd say TDA or Fidelity. Index funds? Vanguard is top-notch. if you're looking for investment advice, you don't need another broker.

  11. Mac hit the 64 bazillion dollar question here.... My guess is that it's small and gettin smaller as us old curmudgeons go over "The Sunset Hill"... There are lotsa folks out there that aint ever seen a slipjoint knife, i think... I generally keep a slip joint and a "tacticool" knife in my pocket at all times, but everybody aint like me... sad leroy...

  12. GEC is turning out some truly great blades these days. They’d be tough to compete with. I hate to see a maker go, but I question how big the market space for non-tacticool knives that seem to have eaten the world these days really is? Since the free market doesn’t much care if you live or die, I expect this is the end of the line for them. Maybe someone will buy the brand’s name in an asset sale, but that sure won’t soften the blow for the folks losing their jobs.

  13. This seems like a reasonable thread to say hi again in. [emoji1] Hi y’all. My world went to #### and I’m slowly picking up the bits and pieces. I love it. Hope everyone is doing well. [emoji1]

  14. Vanguard has the lowest rates for long term mutual funds and are very helpful moving accounts. I have moved all my scattered accounts plus my retirement roll over to Vanguard with their help. I stopped playing with individual stocks a long time ago, I always picked wrong. I'm in an assortment of mutual funds now.

  15. I have accounts at TD Ameritrade and E*Trade. The main reason I have an E*Trade account is the Thomson Reuters research that is available through them. The last time I tried to deal their "customer service" I was quite disappointed, so any new money goes into TD Ameritrade. I have been pleased with TD Ameritrade customer service. They did for me what E*Trade refused to do. Besides having access to more research, having accounts at different brokers gives me access to more mutual funds because not every broker offers access to every fund. I also liked the idea of have multiple accounts back in the days when the online brokers weren't all that stable from an online service perspective. I think that's mostly a non-issue these days. I have not used the mobile app for either, so I cannot provide any insight there. If you have a particular mutual fund you want to buy, find out where it's offered and start narrowing the list from there.

  16. I'm all in for stopping trade with China. I do realize, however, that I am in the minority on this position. I can't see voting for democrats as a solution for anything. If we do lose cheap Russian ammo, the void will be filled in some manner, as long as the demand is there, just like when we lost Chinese firearms and ammo. Norinco made good stuff cheap, but yet we all still survive.

  18. I've had problems with Frog Lube and cold weather. The stuff turned into a paste like substance causing my bolt to have trouble operating properly on my AR-10. I quit using it after that experience. Now I use CLP and rem oil.

  19. My Rolls Royce mechanic friend has some Lucas stickers on his lift. First one has a car and says "Lucas, inventor of the intermittent windshield wiper." The other has a toggle switch and says "Lucas, the first energy efficient lighting" with the positions being off, dim, and flicker.
