  1. Not entirely disagreeing, but mental illness is the catch all make us feel better answer. Mental illness was a much larger issue in the past with even less "treatment" available and yet these mass shooting issues didn't happen. Personally I think it's more societal issues merged with the above. Media/internet fame, entitlement mentality, relativism, post truth culture, mixed with a grossly over medicated childhood (specifically boys), and the demasculating of said boys I think all play the major role and are backed by psychological studies. However, admitting that the liberal arts/feminism/prescription drug movement that created much of these issues is a failure, is far less appealing to the masses as mental illness ... that makes it not their fault. That being said or church started implementing security procedures preemptively just for this reason.

  5. My Ruger story begins with trickery... A few years ago, my phone rings and the call id reveals an international call, it's my buddy calling from Afghanistan. Buddy as in high school, best man, etc. This particular conversation included, "what would be a cool revolver?" I like the size of the SP101, so my contribution was: 3" barrel (slight improvement when shooting .357 Better grips and front sight. Some improvement to the trigger. Months and months after the conversation, I went to visit while he was home. He hands me a box and inside is a beautiful 3" SP fresh from Gemini Custom and Andrews Leather holster. Bead blast finish, billboard removed. XS Big Dot front sight. Cut for moon clips. I swapped the grips, the 3" is sporting Trausch Grips. Bob, I'm not sure how to describe how quickly the cylinder rotates when you begin actuating the hammer for SA or trigger for DA for the next shot, but is seems amazingly fast. I teared up and gave him a hug when I noticed he had my initials engraved on the frame... Note, the 2" also came from Buddy in a trade

  7. It would appear from what the news conference confirmed the local resident engaged the perp and evidently the perp was not expecting it and sounds like if he dropped his rifle I would say he was hit hard by the local resident. The resident persued and the perp crashed and was dead at the scene of the crash. Sounds like the local resident may have fire the fatal shot at the church and perp died trying to flee and then his vehicle crashed............JMHO

  9. This was posted on Reddit, "I knew this guy. He went to my high school. One of my closest friends dated him. It has been known for ####ing YEARS that he is insane and dangerous. Multiple instances of abuse, and stalking my friend for years on social media (scared the #### out of her). #### this piece of ####, but also #### the system that ignored all the signs. My entire body went cold when I read his name, but I was not surprised." I have to agree with @gregintenn, it seems we're not doing enough to keep guns out of the hands of crazy people. I'm not sure how it can be done though. At minimum, we need better treatment.

  16. As Oh Shoot said from press briefing that just concluded. Like all similar situations, best wait for things to shake out to get closer to the truth. One thing is that intense hate permeates our society. Hollywood, movies, video games all capitalize on it. Divisiveness of out society, combined with broken families, Godlessness all lead us to our increasingly dangerous world.

  17. Press briefing confirmed that a local citizen engaged the perp outside church with a rifle, perp dropped his own rifle (Ruger AR) fled in vehicle, and local chased him with his own vehicle. Perp went off road where they found him dead. Unclear whether perp killed self or if local got him. They won't name perp on briefing, but FOX is claiming Devon (or Devin) Kelly as per AUEagle's post above. - OS

  18. Typical scum dem reaction to a tragedy. Take Freedoms away, I'm sorry to say I believe they cheer these acts so they can further their agenda. Whether insanity, radical islam, left wing crazies or whatever reason we can never give up our freedoms for so called security, Franklin said it best. The best way to stop these acts is to be able to stop the threat if one arises. Can we stop all, no, but not being prepared to act is not acceptable. The dem/lib/soc/comm depend on feasting on emotional responses when they happen. Keep a cool head. Again, prayers for those affected & our nation.

  20. This Ruger Super Blackhawk belonged to my son-in-law, Mike Vick. His dad had bought the gun while he was in the Marine Corps. When Mike got old enough, his Dad gave him the gun. Mike read an article in a gun magazine featuring a 5" Super Blackhawk, written by Lee Jurras. Mike had the barrel cut back to 5" but did not have the gun ported. In July of 1979, Mike was killed in a car wreck, and a couple of weeks after the funeral, my daughter gave the gun to me. For awhile I dressed up the gun with some stag grips from Eagle Grips: But, after a number of years, it needed some improvements, so I sent the gun off to Dave Clements who did considerable work on the gun, and I replaced those stags with rosewood, from Lett Grips: This remains one of my favorite guns, and its round count is just over 17,000 rounds fired through it. 22. This ^^^^ I have been fortunate enough to bag some very big deer in my hunting days. Both bucks and does. The largest was a 247 LB, 11 pointer whose rack is hanging outside my office door. (Wish I had mounted the entire head). I never hunted for trophies so meat on the table is my first requirement. Of course management of the herd has to play a part as well. I love venison so for me it is the meat. I butcher it, process it, grind it (The right parts of course), mix it with Pork, stuff it, smoke it, wrap and vacumn bag it, and freeze it all myself. That is ppart of the fun I have had teaching the entire family. I guarantee that if the world falls apart my family will not starve for wont of knowing how to kill and process their own food! Besides, Vensison pepperoni sticks are right up there with Baacon. Ok, almost!

  24. Good movement for the day (yesterday) for as warm as it was. I had 5 does come in to check out the decoy around 7:45. First one blew at him and bounced a few steps, then calmed down. Second and third one checked him out for a while and hung around him. I think they were mad he wasn’t trying to flirt with them haha. Had a button buck come in at 8, he stomped at the decoy and walked right under my stand. Button buck was bouncing around and showing off for the does. Then he and one doe bedded down 25 yards from me for 3 hours. That sucked, I was hungry, thirsty, and had to pee and they were both facing me and had no idea I was there. Then at about 3 I had a decent 6 come in at 10 yards. Just didn’t want to take him out. Seen him 2 weeks ago too. All in all a good day, but all day sits hurt more every year. It was 60 degrees when I got up, so I laid back down. Planning to go out this evening but wife keeps planning things, so we’ll see how this evening goes. Good luck everyone!

  27. Two things: 1) I haven't had to use it, but I have NRA Carry Guard (currently.) I will change to USCCA because I found out that Carry Guard only advances a small amount toward your defense. They don't pay, if you are not acquitted, so no shot at accepting a lesser charge (see #2.) Carry Guard, and others don't pay for non-lethal defense like pepper spray, which is a good idea to have (see #2,) or taser. You can rely on USCCA, or Carry Guard or other insurer for a lawyer referral, but I think USCCA is better than Carry Guard in this, too. 2) I am really happy to have bought "The Law of Self Defense" 3rd Edition. It's only $9.99 on Kindle. I also bought the DVDs. The author does a great job of explaining the 5 elements of a self defense case. He also does a great job of what to say to which parties. You would say only so much to 911, only exculpatory things on scene and almost nothing to detectives (without an attorney,) and why. The 3rd Edition book lists case and jury instructions for each state. And, a level 2 dvd can be purchased for each state. Branca lists some and talks about other cases where the prosecution, judge or other was just out to get someone. He talks about the fact that everything can go right, and you may still be convicted (it has happened.) I have become much more aware of the need to make sure I am prepared in every way .... from attending IDPA matches to staying up to date with legal cases thru Branca's web presence. Do yourself a huge favor, and research "The Law of Self Defense."

  28. My father picked this Colt Woodsman up somewhere. It had a busted stock. He made these stocks out of a piece of scrap walnut he had lying around. I told him he did a great job on the stocks (Colts don't have grips), I guess he remembered, and later gave it to me as a birthday present. As you can see, he put a lot of work into them.

  33. Stage 3: Booby Traps! The Cave Leave your rifle (and pack, if necessary) outside and enter the cave. Move forward on your own, keeping your pistol HOLSTERED, until you see a “Wait Here” sign or find an RO and start your wait time if necessary. You will need a light NOT ATTACHED to your weapon for navigation just to get to the start line – if you do not have a light on your person when you arrive you will not be allowed to enter, and will zero this stage. You may have any type of light you wish, and you may use a weapon light in the stage if you wish – but you CANNOT draw your pistol before you begin the shooting stage. There will be ROs and other shooters in front of you, and they will not respond kindly to having the business end of your pistol pointed at them. On the buzzer, move forward and put three pistol hits on each of 5 targets from marked shooting boxes as you find them to neutralize. Hidden along the path will be multiple booby traps that trigger “claymores” (bright lights). For each booby trap you trigger, 60 seconds will be added to your shoot time. Tread carefully! Any hits on “no shoot” targets will add 20 seconds to your shoot score for each target hit.

  35. Gallatin Gun Club will host its last indoor match at Sumner Gun and Supply on November 8th. Start time will be 6:00PM, set up at 5:00PM. 70 rounds required. 4 stages, all IDPA rules apply. No match will be held on November 22nd. Steve Murphy will take over for the December 13th match under the Sumner Gun banner. Please give Steve and Doug your same support that you have given me. I want to Thank Sumner Gun for allowing Gallatin Gun IDPA to operate at their range. Gallatin Gun is still looking for land and will most likely reopen as a different Club at an unknown location. I must step down to take care of some health issues for a couple of months. After that I have agreed to take over as match Director over the USPSA matches for MCTS. I will Retire from my job at NES after 38 years on the job on December 1st. I plan on making a full time commitment to the shooting sports sometime next year. Thank you all. https://practiscore.com/gallatin-gun-idpa-at-sumner-gun-8/register

  36. Not the greatest pic. This is a 1952 or 53 Marlin 336 in .35. It was in really rough condition when I picked it up for my son. The fore stock was not even for the gun and had been hot glued to the tube. The rear stock had been stained plum and scratched up, then the whole thing had been coated in varnish. I made a 10 year old boy happy by making it look ( in my opinion) better.

  37. For almost 40 years now, i've had some form of M1A, M14, M21, M25 or now the XM21 from BULA and can certainly state that preference as my tried and true platform. Messed with a few plastic guns and they just ain't got the magic in my hands. That said, my vote goes toward you gettin an M1A. Check out an attempt to modernize my M1A passion with pic rails and carbon fiber that has worked out okay, so far. Meet the XM21 in .308 from BULA... 150 grain Federal Premiums at 100yards...

  43. Y'all are probably gonna call me all kinds of nasty names. But I'll tell you anyway. In my late friends collection there was a like new Romanian SAR-1, a bunch of extra mags and about 8000 rounds of ammo. I could have had that rifle dirt cheap. Hell, his wife very likely would have just given it to me. I could have been set up with an AK and ammo for life. I seriously considered it. I must have picked up that rifle about a dozen times, handled it, pointed it, etc. I know its a fine weapon. It has a great reputation, fires a decent cartridge and is battle proven. In the end, there's just something about the AK that just doesn't "do it" for me. I'm not even sure why. So I let it go to some one else. BTW: I know the guy who bought it and he's tickled plumb to pieces with it. I've mentioned before that I don't care for the AR type rifles at all. Maybe I'm just an old fart too set in my ways. I guess if the world ever really does go to hell, I'll just have to muddle through with these.

  44. There is a lot of work that goes into making sure the barrel is straight, especially if you cannot remove the barrel. Probably 30-45 minutes to set it up then another 30 minutes to thread it. And those 30 minutes are 100% concentration with no distractions or interruptions. Tooling is also expensive and doesn't last forever. The machines themselves can be very expensive. Even a "budget" lathe will cost thousands and "great" manual lathes are over $10K. Get into the precision of CNC and you could buy a house for about the same price. Quality work costs money. And if you are unhappy with the cost let the gunsmith know. Most gunsmiths who work for themselves have room to negotiate. And if you are still unhappy then look for a cheaper gunsmith but let me warn you. Cheap isn't always the best especially if you are threading for a silencer. A baffle strike from a cheap thread job will cost you a lot more than you saved.
