The Gell-Mann Amnesia affect is probably worth considering when looking at reporting here. As stated by Michael Crichton: Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray's case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the "wet streets cause rain" stories. Paper's full of them. In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.6 points

This is a strong probability. I pray that we can get at least one more Conservative Pro Constitution Judge on the Supreme Court. Two would be even better.4 points

Getting closer to the perfect carry package. Folded it is 19", open it is 29" with the muzzle being just over 26" so it is VFG safe. Sight radius is now 13" and the AR sight works very well with AK front sight. 4 piece comp works the best with this short barrel., very little concussion. Reworked, crisp 2.5 pound trigger.2 points

Yeah, first encounter with press, said he knew his brother well, and that "he might have had "one long rifle". He does seem sort of "edgy" to me. - OS2 points

Heck, it would have been 'wise' not to friggin' speed when you have illegally altered firearms in the vehicle. That is what gets me - if the dude had the sense to exercise a bit of caution and travel at the speed limit he wouldn't have been stopped in the first place. I know we all exceed the speed limit from time to time but a good, general rule of thumb is if you have something in your vehicle that could get you some federal prison time you should probably try every way possible to avoid interacting with the po-po.2 points

Play stupid games with stupid prizes. Most people that have ever shot full auto understand it is good for a few laughs but that is about all. Fun as long as someone else is buying the ammo. Not as much fun though when it is your ammo. Controlled fire is much more accurate and effective. However either method is horrific when it is from a madman.2 points

This is my wifes event, just like last year, I'll be there Sharpening and selling a few knives, this time I'll have my brand new 2017 Wicked Edge Commercial system and one of my Tormek machines, Dave Curtiss has donated an ODT Flipper knife, these are $295 everywhere, the silent auction gives you a chance to get one much cheaper. Protech always donates a knife to two for the Auction as well, I should have a few knives available for sell as well and if you buy one from me I'll do a free Wicked Edge on it, If you are anywhere around, please come by this is for a great cause and I would like to see as many of you as I can2 points

I'm sure a ton has already been figured out, but this was the worst mass shooting in our history. Any information we see will be released after a series of calculated decisions.2 points

Hmmm. It’s almost like the GOP doesn’t care much about guns either. We’ve seen it here in Tennessee despite a supermajority. I don’t know why we’d expect much different in Washington.2 points

Snopes already does. http://www.snopes.com/second-gunman-shoot-fourth-floor-mandalay-bay/ Of course, the obvious problem with the contention is that the windows don't open, and none were broken in whole hotel except in Paddock's suite. - OS1 point

Here is the other side of the coin, and it is not to defend the warranty/insurance company. I am a plumber for the largest privately owned plumbing company in my region. With decades of respect and a quality reputation. We are honest and fair. Not everyone in my trade is. My company warranties all work and stands behind it and our employees. I am proud of my profession and my company. Not all of my peers. Especially the thieves in the Blue Trucks. Due to our response time and expertise we hold a contract with a national home insurance company I will not name. You can get coverage for your water service line, internal plumbing, external plumbing, water heaters and HVAC. My company does not mess with electical or HVAC, we are plumbers. This insurance is offered through most major metropolitan utility companies for a monthly fee. With this insurance you pay nothing out of pocket for service. It doesn't cover plumbing fixtures. No faucets, no water closets, no valves. It covers pipe breaks and stoppages. It covers water heaters. These contracts are negotiable. There are a few other companies in town that also have a contract with the same company. We recently tried to renegotiate and we lost a sizable chunk of the contract as it wasn't evening out for us. The insurance company chose to go with a smaller less capable company and the customers are paying the price. I hear it daily when I am sent out to fix an issue the other company was incapable of resolving. This insurance can be invaluable for homeowners who don't have the money for the service, or require extensive and expensive services. It is a massive pain the ass for the service company though. More often than not they are actually paid LESS on the job than they would for a private call. My company for instance is paid at a flat rate depending on the call type. Internal coverage pays a flat rate, snake a drain? $X. Repipe from the upstairs bathroom to the basement, through the walls to the main stack across 40'? $X. External coverage pays a flat rate, drag your 300lb machine down two flights of stairs to use a Sawzall to cut open a pipe to snake the main? $Y. Dig up half the yard to replace root infested pipes with new PVC and backfill? $Y. Snake from an outside cleanout and be on site for less than twenty minutes? $Y Those jobs mentions could vary in price for the private customer from $99 to $5000. With the insurance they often pay nothing. There are a few reinstatement fees or items the insurance won't cover. However, we go back the to same instance of a $99 job being paid the same flat rate (which is higher than $99) as the $5000 job being paid the same flat rate (which is a lot closer to $99.) Now, that is not to say that we are indifferent. I treat all of my customers the same, regardless of who is paying the bill. Many times it is the insurance company directly that is difficult to deal with. You get sent to a house with little more information than "The toilet won't flush." And honestly, most customers don't know more than that. As a professional it can range anywhere from Little Susie used too much toilet papers to a pipe being collapsed. However, if I am able to get the customer flow, per the contract with the insurance company, I am done, time to leave and I now own a warranty on that call. When I am called back three days later because the toilet won't flush again, I am back out there, to attempt to get the customer flow. Even if I KNOW the line is collapsed, if I can get flow, it is time to load up and leave. If I am lucky, after the third time (and only having been paid once!) I might get authorization to run a camera to determine the root (pun!) of the problem and get authorization to repair the line. This procedure can take up to six months if the insurance company wants to be a pain. A private customer? "Oh look, I pulled back a ton of roots, your home is X years old and has terra cotta pipes, I can run a camera for a discounted fee to determine the state of your line." Followed with "Your lines are fine, use a little foaming Root X in three days time and you shouldn't have to see me again for a few years," or "Wow, this isn't good as you can see here on the camera... here is a written estimate for the repair that is good for one year from the date." Which means that we can often have the entire situation resolved in a day or two at the tops. I have often amazed customers (insurance and private) when I pull a shovel off my truck, dig a three foot hole and repair a sewer in a matter of minutes, when they expected a week or two lead time. I take pride in my job, I am good at it, and I make a lot of money doing it. I understand that not everyone in my profession has the same moral compass as I do. However, don't discount an entire trade on a few dishonest cats. And again, it is often the insurance warranty company, not the service company, that complaints are about.1 point

David, The problem is that Occam's Razor in this case may actually point to an "alternate theory". Granted, while we don't have all facts, something does not look right here. If you were a mad man trying to kill as many people, you'd bring several guns, some for backup, and lots of ammo. The amount of guns here seems excessive. (Unless he wasn't aware that you can reload firearms). The way they are laid out in the pictures also looks odd to me, almost as if they were "sprinkled" around the room for effect, not stacked up. You know, to make a statement. I think he was making his statement by shooting as many people as he could. I don't think his statement was "look how many guns I can have". I have to admit that I only did cursory research/reading about this case yesterday, and have not, and don't intent to, do any further research at this point. But after reading that he doesn't seem to fit the typical profile, my first thought was he may have just been a pawn. It's pretty convenient to just have a body with a "self-inflicted" gun shot wound in a room full of guns. It is possible that he was just picked up an hour earlier, lured to that room, shot, and then whoever did the shooting and managed to disappear. Now, I'm not a conspiracy nut, and don't point to shadow government agents, etc, but this case just has some odd things about it. Occam's Razor might actually lead us away from the truth. I'd like to see some evidence (like hotel video footage) of him hauling "bags" to his room, or engaged in the act of shooting or whatever. At this point we got a mystery man in a room full of guns. And that just looks too much like a familiar movie plot to me. I'm curious though. Will we try to gather evidence and come to a conclusion, or will he have a conclusion that we'll be gathering evidence for?1 point

................some photos of custom revolvers, especially Single Action revolvers. If you've got a customized Colt, Uberti, or Ruger that's been to your 'smith's, post a photo of it here. Here is one of mine: This is a Colt Single Action Army, .357 Magnum. The brass backstrap is from an 1851 Navy, grips home made, S&W rear sight, Ruger front sight. This was done by (the late) Ed Mason & Sons gunsmiths. Yours? Bob Wright1 point

As an aside and a warning, for those of us who have gone through the process to have Class III items, make sure you have copies of your stamps and proper paperwork with you when these items are out of the safes. The public perception of suppressors, SBRs, etc is being distorted by the media now. And many officers that might make a traffic stop might not be fully aware of laws either, so watch your back guys and play safe and legal. Just my opinion....[emoji6]1 point

As others have said, it's Vegas. A lot of luggage, or hard plastic cases on wheels for only one person aren't out of the ordinary. Think of how many large scale trade shows & conventions come through town a year, and how much stuff an individual working the show for their company has to lug around for it. Very easy to hide a cache like this guy had in plain sight in that town.1 point

Maybe a suicide by cop with a big ol shootout and he chickened out ? Regardless I'm glad it ended the way it did for the officers involved.1 point

Easy, because it is Vegas. I am sure the maid has seen a lot worse than some guy with a lot of bags. Still sticking with my guess that he was a radicalized liberal. At least it would be like most of the previous mass shooters if he was. Telling you, it is a disease.1 point

Guys, Mac and I spoke earlier and we agreed to unlock this thread. We all need a place to voice our thoughts, concerns, and angst as we process this event and work through it as a nation. My only request is that we try to steer clear of the conspiracy theories and keep "Occam's Razor" in mind. If you're not familiar, Occam's Razor is the idea that when presented with an array of possible solutions or answers, the most simple one is statistically going to be the correct one. If we can please allow the conspiracy theorist websites to corner the market on far-fetched ideas, and stick to discussing more plausible things, and not turn against each other due to stated or perceived political beliefs, then this thread can continue. It's not us against each other here.1 point

Is anyone really suprised? When has the federal government ever repealed or relaxed a law concerning firearms and accessories? BTW, you can't argue the '94 "assault weapons ban" as it was only a temporary law that was not renewed.1 point

Y’all know my position on this. When they finally come for the guns, it will be because the GOP blessed it. No politician is in favor of an empowered people.1 point

Well. I am back from the lets just listen to one side planning commission. I sat through and listen to several tell their lies and half truths. Even one guy that bragged owning an AR-15 and how much fun it was to cut trees down with it in his back field, then explained how we just cannot have a Gun Range here, where would the bullets go and all that lead, the guy that has a trap range on his lot but having a Professional built range in the area with safety officers is just out of the question. One lady admitted to being an NRA member. or my kids just would not be safe.... or the poor Deer's we hunt. We are thinking about going to the full board and by passing this local group. They had no interest in hearing our response on the issues. We have 500 members needing a range with over 400 on the wait list. I cannot see 12 locals overriding this if we can satisfy all the requirements. End of Rant. for now.1 point
