  1. I thought a side charging minimalist rifle was an AK47.

  2. With all they hype I predict it will be rainy and cloudy the entire day. As far as glasses go, if you absolutely must stare at the Sun, make sure they are made by American Paper Optics, a Memphis company that produces zillions of glasses for special occasions every year.

  3. 1. Why? They aren't firearms. They are an accessory and should be treated as such. 2. No one is needing the government to solve it. We need the government out of it. You are backwards.

  4. My first gun was a H&R single shot .20 ga. that my father bought for me when I was 8, I still remember going to Kmart to buy it. When I was around 11 it was stolen from our home. Fast forward 8 years, I get a call from the Anderson County Sheriffs Office saying that they have recovered a firearm that belongs to me. I'm glad it made its way back home.

  6. My bees had a rough year this year. The hive that I bought a new queen for, must have rejected her. I had checked on it a few weeks after putting her in, and there was no sign of babies being made, there were very few bees, and there was a nasty wax moth infestation beginning. Wax moths will absolutely destroy your hive. This particular hive had a ton of honey in it, and the wax moths bored thru the comb and all that honey dripped right out the bottom of the hive. Unfortunately That hive did not make it and I had to take it apart. My oldest hive, however, finally got around to making some honey. This one swarms every year, and so the remaining bees waste a lot of time building back resources. They never seem to be able to make extra honey. Well this year they did. Out of about the 5 frames they filled, I was able to harvest about 12 jars of honey from them this weekend. It's not a lot, but I'm just so glad to see any kind of return on my investment and work.

  7. Well, I'm about finished with the rebuild. Took me awhile due to the heat and working alone but it was gratifying getting it done. I sunk the 10' 4x6 legs 2' each using a bag of quick set cement and then topped it off with some old cement I had. The old cement didn't set so had to dig it out, was like powdery gravel. So I used some diy footing forms to put more cement around the legs, at least 6" above the ground. I used some large deck screw which are advertised as stronger than lag bolts on the corners and joists hangers for added strength. I decided on 42" wide windows on three sides and a 2'x6' door with a smaller window in the back. Framed in the corners to hide the seam and further waterproof them, also framed in the window, mostly for esthetics but helps hold the rain guards too. Wider windows and reducing it to a 6'×6' gives me a better view overall, should also help keep it warmer in there. The metal roof, gutter and stairs still have me a bit worried, the downspout actually arcked across to the ladder but it didn't shock me, so I will probably run a ground wire to a rod. There is a plywood layer under the metal roof so should stay dry inside, and keep the water cleaner in the barrels. Now just have to finish cleaning up the debris around the stand and maybe pour cement footers for the metal staircase (on pavers now). I might also add a small retaining wall behind the foot of the staircase to prevent erosion, should know more after all these rainstorms go by.

  8. I got some more humbling news today: Gold Star family members who were directly tied to some of the individuals the stages are based on will be at the event. Gold Star families are those who lost an immediate family member in combat. Help me honor these people by not only showing up in great numbers, but putting your best feet forward and showing them how much we appreciate and understand their sacrifice.

  9. Iver Johnson L'il Champ. Single shot bolt action .22. In one of maybe ten memories I have of my father, I was about five and he took me to a gunshow. He taught me how to hold it, to point in a safe direction, then bought it for me. My mother was staunchly anti-gun. To the point of any toy gun I brought home vanishing. I can't honestly say I was ever allowed to shoot it. I gave it to my daughter and started her shooting it when she was four. For those that don't know the rest of that story she is eleven (next month) and has a deep stack of trophies from her shooting sports. I am not sure I still have the rifle for sentimental reasons, it shoots very poorly, and was not taken care of at all for the first half of my life when it couldn't touch it. But I have it all the same.

  10. Nope, its a lie supposedly created by some Glock super fanboy who's still pissed that Sig got the Army contract. I've seen this on a couple of other sites. Do a little searching and the truth comes to light.

  11. I scored 680 rounds of 5.45 from Academy Sports for less than $0.12 per round with tax. Every bit counts, right? Finding 5 sealed tins of surplus 7.62x54r for $110 a pop was the icing on the cake today.

  15. Only shade #14 is dark enough for solar viewing. That's the darkest welding glass available. Anything less is not dark enough. And stacking doesn't work. Two layers of #7 does not make #14 glass.

  20. The first gun I bought on my own was a Marlin 60. I think everyone needs one. Great guns. And yes the Glenfield name was sort of a store brand line Marlin did. Lots of times (as far as I read) the difference might only be that the wood for the stock was cheaper. Oh the days when you could buy guns at the auto parts store... I miss 'em

  22. I just paid my renters insurance in July so it's good till next July and my boat insurance does not come up again till February. I'm gonna get this Jeep policy paid this time and begin looking through Zander again and will probably call them and speak with one of their agents.

  23. It was my 13th birthday present and still have it. Gleenfield model 60, they were made by Marlin I do believe as they were a copy of the Marlin Model 60. Fairly certain it was purchased from the Western Auto in Del Rio Texas. I remember chasing some big ol' Texas jack rabbits with it. Good old days.

  24. Yep, I still own the used Sears model 41 bolt action single shot .22 rifle that my Dad bought me for my 13th birthday. I'll never sell it. I spent countless hours honing my shooting skills with that rifle. I credit that cheap rifle for giving me the skills to qualify expert and earn the high shooter award while I was in Marine Corps boot camp almost 40 years ago. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  29. Picked up a 686-5 2 1/2" snub at the Crossville gun show Saturday. Added the stocks as I had a pair that needed a home. Saw this one walking around, other than that, was not impressed. I did play with the new 870 Tactical 14, it was pretty sweet. They weren't dealing so I'll probably get one off GB.

  32. As the owner of Steve's Pages what can I do to help to make sure that resource is always available? I use it several times a week and it is an amazing resource, both for shooters and non shooters alike. The amount of information Steve put together on his website is staggering. And if you would like to add I have digital copies of owner's manuals and schematics for pretty much every firearm made in the last 100 years. I will gladly mail you a CD or thumbdrive for you to add to the website. When Steve passed and the website went down I got sick at the thought of all that information being lost. I am so glad you resurrected it.

  33. I'm glad to hear your company has all those jobs as it does insure Job security. As far as the orange barrels go I have not driven down a highway more then 10 miles in Tennessee that I have not driven through or past Orange Barrels in the last 25 years so I have just considered them part of Tennessees Landscape. I have spoke to people traveling through the state that call Tennessee "The State of Never Ending Construction" and I just smile at them and agree.............

  36. I went over to the Americanlongrifles forum to see what they were saying about this sale and it sounds pretty much as described at the link for the sale. "This is how these are usually conducted around here. It's an "estate sale" with the address being given the day before the sale. The next morning, you get a number which dictates the order you will be allowed into the sale. The earlier your number, the better chance you have. They only let so many buyers into the sale at a time, allowing others in as some leave. Prices are fixed, but you can leave an offer and if the item doesn't sell, they will consider it. Previews generally aren't allowed. You have to be there in person or have an agent present. I doubt there will be an individual item listing as at auctions. You can bet that at 8am the day of the sale people will be already lined up around the block waiting for numbers." "It's not an auction. It's an estate sale. I go to these sorts of things all the time in Pennsylvania and New Jersey--there are a half dozen or so within an easy drive every weekend--and they all work exactly as …………. describes."

  37. Everyone's body chemistry is different. I'm sure vaccines cause adverse reactions in a very small percentage of people. Going on a crusade to stop all vaccinations because 1% or less develop some condition that might be related to the vaccine just doesn't pass the smell test.

  38. Some vaccines may be unneeded, but I find it ironic that there is definite proof that some vaccines have saved countless lives. Other vaccines serve in my opinion as more of a convenience. I got a chicken pox vaccine as a child. My Wife didn't. She got the chicken pox at a young age, which was "bearable" in the grand scheme of things. She got shingles when she was about 19. My understanding is that in order to get shingles, you have to have had the chicken pox. Thus it is also my understanding that I cannot get shingles as I never had chicken pox. Shingles can be very damaging depending on where it occurs. Hers was on her shoulder so it was relatively safe. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  39. I had a thought on how to construct a relatively simple but theoretically effective cage. First, find an ammo can that is roughly 30-50% larger than the items you want to protect. Next, construct a box from copper or aluminum that is about 1” smaller than the ammo can in height, length and depth. Think of a simple shoe box type of construction having a four sided bottom and snug fitting top. Apply one to three lines of expanding foam to the inside bottom of the ammo can. Press inner box into foam and hold until the foam is firm enough to hold inner box. Apply foam between walls of inner box and ammo can leaving room for inner box lid to fit. That’s it. This box does not have to be grounded. note: searching Amazon “aluminum box” offers several ready made options. Something like this could be slipped into the ammo can using a layer of bubble wrap. If you are curious, the reasoning behind this construction method follows: An EMP, or electromagnetic pulse, has a wide frequency spectrum ranging from VLF (very low frequency) to UV (ultraviolet). As such, the design of an “EMP Cage” would need to protect from frequencies spanning from about 3 Hz (Hertz) to 10 PHz (Petahertz), or just beyond visible light. The properties of the shielding material need to be just as varied as the frequencies they offer protection from. Different metals offer protection at different frequencies. Low frequency magnetic fields require a metal of more ferrous properties (or that have high permeability) Steel works for lower frequencies with lower carbon steel (often referred to as “mild steel”) being more effective because of it’s higher permeability and saturation point.. Copper is widely used over the RF range. Aluminum also works in the RF range but usually needs to be about twice as thick as copper for the same level of affect. The layers of metal are isolated to minimize galvanic decay. The corrosion is real but minimal and is only an issue over time.

  41. Very good suggestions above. I only recommend guns I have or did have. The Bersa Thunder is great, as is the Beretta Bobcat, Mark II, Bearcat [especially the Shopkeeper], and most of the other semi-autos mentioned above. The S&W AirLite M317 feels like junk to me, like I'm gonna break it.....or shoot it loose. graycrait mentioned the S&W Model 63 .......allow me to give you a huge warning on the S&W M63-5 SS 3"bbl .22lr DO NOT go hold/fondle/shoot one of these.......they suck...I mean they will suck you in 100% and you will never keep it far away from you. It may even be the force that makes you go hiking/camping......go plink some cans......against your normal will [or the spouse's] Best advice I can give you.....if you know a S&W M63-5 is anywhere near you......run, Forest, run !! [I keep one on my desk, loaded, and walk down to the mailbox at the road with it in my pocket if I don't have my EDC on]
