After Maduro shut down the recall election two weeks ago the consensus is that Venezuela is now officially a dictatorship. Unfortunately, Maduro doesn't have the charisma that Chavez had. And, as a former bus driver he doesn't have the skills to run a country either. They'll kill him before it's done. I pray for the people there. Hard to believe that only 30 years ago they were more or less a first world economy. It ought to be a cautionary tale of how quickly a strongman can screw stuff up with the support of public willing to turn their heads because they're getting promised what they think they want.4 points

In that case, slather that sucker in red loctite and give the torque your best guess. Torque won't matter much if the barrel ain't wobblin. Best part... you will know the required removal tool. Propane torch.3 points

These are from a law professor. The article is good as it updates the video, but the video is what is really important here. Professor Duane explains how cops and district attorneys will team up to convict people based on some of the sleaziest stuff I've ever heard of. https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/mvkgnp/law-professor-police-interrogation-law-constitution-survival?utm_source=vicefbus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08fZQWjDVKE3 points

Good on them for actually supporting their customer. I can think of companies that I'd love to get that level of service from. Heck, I think of plenty of companies where I'd love to borrow a barrel nut wrench (I'm looking at you Knight's Armament.)2 points

The 'poorly paid' argument honestly holds little water, for me. If I don't like the salary I am making and don't like my job do you know what I should do? Look for another job. Officers have the same option - no one is forcing them to remain in law enforcement. Further, they had to know that the job would be hard and they wouldn't get rich doing it when they signed up. Would I want to do it? Nope - and that is why I don't. Now, I understand that one might not be able to find a new job immediately and I understand that the bills have to be paid so one might be 'stuck' for a while but I do get tired of hearing how 'awful' and 'low paying' the job is - especially when it is used for justification for an officer or officers doing anything from being jerks to outright abusing a citizen's rights right up to strapping someone to a restraint chair and torturing them. If the job is that awful and low paying then one should look for another job that one likes better and stop giving good cops a bad name.2 points

I can't help myself, I gotta throw my opinion in here, she provided her carry permit upon request, I saw nothing to prompt an NCIC or State check on the serial number of the weapon being carried lawfully for there was no reason to lead one to believe it was stolen. That being said, once the check was conducted by dispatch which came back as "stolen" the Officer was obligated at that point to take the weapon into possession. However, arrest at this point was Officer discretion if the individual had sufficient proof of identity and no extenuating circumstances. Now, the Officer stated that Dispatch had screwed up before in such circumstances, and once they ran the check, a hard copy of the results would have been printed to be attached to the arrest report. Upon arrival at HQ the Officer should have personally looked at the print out to confirm the accuracy before booking ensued or the case went any further. Had he done so, she could have been immediately released with an apology and an explanation of the error. Although still a screw up, at least at that point it could be seen as an honest mistake and a face to face apology would have gone a long way. Then the next shift he could have bought a snow cone, said hello and left a good tip. He would have probably then had a new friend in the community.2 points

Two months ago we welcomed this young patriot into the world. Last week one of my best friends in the world got back from his first deployment with the absolute elite of the elite SF in the Army. He brought this home for my son, and I won't lie about it...I choked up. This little fella has made me all kinds of soft. This flag represents all that I think is great about our country, and is easily my most prized possession. I hope I raise this young patriot to love this country half as much as the steely eyed freedom fighter that faced our enemies under this flag in Syria. Caption on flag reads: "This flag was flown by the first American forces to enter and assault Raqqa, Syria on 14 June 2017. It was raised to honor and celebrate the birth and lifelong freedom of Wyatt Patrick. OPPRESSORS BEWARE"1 point

There are all kinds of cops like in any other profession. I have known good and bad in a lot of places. My Papaw was a deputy and was loved by coworkers and prisoners alike for treating people like humans. More than once a former prisoner showed up to thank him and offer to do chores for him. On the other hand, my uncle was a patrolman in another city. He would show up in full uniform, including State Trooper style glasses at family gatherings...on his day off. He said he needed a pocket recorder because "people always lied about him harassing them." He was an royal a$$hole to everyone. He had a power trip about it like I bet these guys did. If you do it for the right reasons you will be happy doing it. Otherwise, no matter the pay, move on. Nothing justifies you torturing someone that you have clearly restrained.1 point

Well, well -- look here: https://www.classicfirearms.com/diamondback-rail-10-5 Apparently it really is a Diamondback rail. Also, the review on this page mentions the issue with proprietary barrel nut. Cheers, Whisper1 point

I'd spend some time on AliExpress. I'd be surprised if it doesn't yield answers. Are there no markings on the handguard anywhere? That's generally an indication of an airsoft part - as they're trying to keep from getting confiscated for infringement at customs.1 point

Rather than Vice grips I would use a pipe wrench, they are designed and work better on round things than a wrench or pair of pliers. With a pipe wrench the more pressure you apply the tighter the wrench grabs the nut. A strap wrench will NEVER get the nut tight enough, at least not one you would find at Home Depot. As long as the nut is tight without the chance of it backing off the torque values are not as important. I have built quite a few AR's before I had a torque wrench and never had an issue. I seriously doubt that barrel nut is so hard it requires the use of a cobalt bit. Hardening adds quite a bit to the cost and that rail looks like typical cheap rail so it is probably not hardened.1 point

I can't find a picture of that thing anywhere. If I was going for much more than a sloppy blaster gun, I would probably just cry twice and get a name brand part. I'm on the snobby side when it comes to handguards anyway. I'm not about to stick a barrel on a rifle without the right tool. Now, the way to put torque on a smooth round surface without dinking it up is a barrel vise. That may work in place of the right tool. I picked this on the last 3 builds. Love 'em. The pitch of the teeth looks too fine for a common spline socket. I'm counting 42 teeth there? You might be able to improvise a crows foot socket as you don't really need every tooth engaged. I did a quick CAD drawing showing how the outside diameter of the nut need only intersect at strategic points, i.e. I'm showing 4. If you trace the nut on to a flat piece of sheet steel, then drilled 4 holes to accept roll pins the diameter of the pitch, followed by drilling the outer diameter to intersect the 4 holes you could then grab the steel with Vice Grips and give it some serious torque. (30 to 80 ft/lbs according to the net) If you could cut the 3/8" square you could use a real torque wrench. Sorry to be lengthy, but it's an option.1 point

He didn't have to run the serial #. I don't see why that's ok. Its discrimination against a gun owner. Why not also run a credit check and see if she owes a debt? I hope she gets her just due and record is cleaned!1 point

Exactly. I think I would've politely pressed the issue of disarming "for the officer's safety" which is utter nonsense. I'll give you mine if you give me yours... haha. Does your gun normally go off while it's in a holster? Mine doesn't either, so wouldn't it be best for it to stay where it is? You want to take my gun for your safety? I want to leave it where it is for everyone's safety. I'll let you touch it, but you gotta buy me dinner first. haha Ever had an accidental discharge? Me neither, so let's leave it where it is and keep the streak alive. And so on...1 point

That is what every single officer who has ever asked if I was armed said when they ran my DL (and saw that I had a permit).1 point

Personally, I believe that once a citizen provides proof that he or she is legally carrying then, without strong probable cause, at the very least, an officer should have no more right to disarm the citizen than the citizen has to request that the officer leave his or her firearm in the patrol car. As a citizen, I don't know the person who is approaching me and just because he or she is wearing a uniform doesn't mean I won't end up 'accidentally' shot. My life and my right to feel safe and secure in my life is every bit as important as an officer's so as long as I haven't given the officer probable cause to suspect I will do him/her harm then if I have to disarm for our conversation then the officer should have to disarm, as well. Luckily, instead of disarming a legally armed citizen I think/hope most officers would reasonably say, "Well, you leave yours in your holster, I will leave mine in my holster and we won't have a problem."1 point

I mean concealed as in out of sight.... not "hiding in plain sight". If her shirt had covered it there might not have been an incident to begin with. Again what they did is NOT her fault....but if they don't see it...it probably doesn't happen the same way. Not to derail this thread but this falls in the category of people being amazed that others pick up on them "being armed" by spotting the pocket clipped knife in their pocket, or someone seeing the bottom half of their OWB holster that just happens to be sticking out from under their skin tight T shirt, and dudes at the airport dressed like they are going directly to baghdad shocked at getting their "tactical pens" confiscated in the TSA line.1 point

"I'm from the government...I'm here to help...." While the overwhelming majority of police officers are conscientious and do a good job for little pay and less appreciation you also see instances where things like this happen. This woman was treated like a criminal , her liberty taken away and booked into jail because of a mistake. It is not like a normal business where a mistake would be she asked for coke and got diet coke instead. She was booked into jail. She should at the very minimum get any attorneys fees, lost wages and some sort of reasonable settlement for emotional damages. On the other hand....if the gun had been concealed none of this would have likely happened because they would not have seen the gun in the first place. Some of you don't like hearing that, but truth is truth. It may be your right to open carry but it also creates situations that would not be created if a gun were not visible.1 point

I wouldn't sweat it. It is legal to have a loaded firearm in your vehicle with your TNHCP. I travel through IL all the time armed. It's no big deal.1 point

If you have a handgun carry permit, you can have a handgun loaded in your car in Illinois and that includes Chicago. You just can't carry it loaded on your person outside of your car unless you are in your hotel room or somewhere like a range or hunting. Why would you not have a loaded handgun in your car for the trip when you are legal?1 point
