  1. So being the self sufficient (cheap) SOB I am, I have an older Ruger carbine rifle I picked up. I cast and reload for my Ruger SBH, however I load it on the lite side. The lite loads wont cycle the action and I have read that unjacked lead will foul the gas action on the rifle. So I swagged me some jacked bullets. Took some 40 S&W brass, annealed it so it is soft, stuffed in a 180 gr lead I cast for my pistols, mashed it into a 280 sizing die, put on a cannelure, and loaded up some hot rounds. They cycle the rifle great, no sign of over pressure and hit where I aim. Shot a few from my pistol at night, nice fire ball. LOL The bullets came out at 255 gr and just over .430, I did run them through a .430 size die.

  2. Last week two of our rabbits were killed by a fox. I caught the fox in the act. I've seen an adult and two pups running around the neighborhood. No hard feelings towards the fox though, it's simply doing what foxes do.

  4. I have to disagree with a part of this. About a year ago Gallatin had some type of Fair on the Square event and they had no gun signs up everywhere and at each gate that people had to pass through to get on the square. There was also a Gallatin police officer at each gate. There was quit a few people that expressed their views about the gun signs and turned around and left. It was Street Fair they had been having for many years And last year was the first year for the signs and it had the lowest attendance since the fair began. The Street vendors were upset about the loss in revenue and they asked the promoter what he has changed and he said the only thing different was the no gun signs. I know 2 vendors that told him if he was going to do that this year they would not be attending. There was enough of a difference in attendance that the vendors were able to notice something was wrong. It is coming back again in August so waiting to see if the signs get put up again this year.

  7. I've found a lot of vintage gun photos on the web using various search criteria but this one got my attention because of the Tennessee connection. I'm not sure how I managed to never learn of this person until now being that I've lived most of my adult life in a county bordering the county of her birth place. Maybe some of you long timers know the history of Mary Fields. Mary Fields (1832–1914), also known as Stagecoach Mary and Black Mary, was the first African-American woman star route mail carrier in the United States. She was not an employee of the United States Post Office. The Post Office Department did not hire or employ mail carriers for star routes; it awarded star route contracts to persons who proposed the lowest qualified bids, and who in accordance with the Department’s application process posted bonds and sureties to substantiate their ability to finance the route. Once a contract was obtained, the contractor could then drive the route themselves, sublet the route, or hire an experienced driver. Some individuals obtained multiple star route contracts and conducted the operations as a business. Fields obtained the star route contract for the delivery of U. S. mail from Cascade, Montana to Saint Peter's Mission in 1885. She drove the route with horse and wagon, not a stagecoach, for two four-year contracts: from 1885 to 1889 and from 1889 to 1903. Author Miantae Metcalf McConnell provided documentation discovered during her research about Mary Fields to the United States Postal Service Archives Historian in 2006. This enabled USPS to establish Mary Fields' contribution as the first African American woman star route mail in the United States. Mary was born a slave in Hickman County, Tennessee, around 1832, Fields was freed when American slavery was outlawed in 1865. She then worked in the home of Judge Edmund Dunne. When Dunne's wife Josephine died in 1883 in San Antonio, Florida, Fields took the family's five children to their aunt, Mother Mary Amadeus, the mother superior of an Ursuline convent in Toledo, Ohio. In 1884, Mother Amadeus was sent to Montana Territory to establish a school for Native American girls at St. Peter's Mission, west of Cascade. Learning that Amadeus was stricken with pneumonia, Fields hurried to Montana to nurse her back to health. Amadeus recovered and Fields stayed at St. Peter's, hauling freight, doing laundry, growing vegetables, tending chickens, repairing buildings, and eventually becoming the forewoman. In 1895, although approximately 60 years old, Fields was hired as a mail carrier because she was the fastest applicant to hitch a team of six horses. This made her the second woman and first African American woman to work for the U.S. Postal Service. She drove the route with horses and a mule named Moses. She never missed a day, and her reliability earned her the nickname "Stagecoach". If the snow was too deep for her horses, Fields delivered the mail on snowshoes, carrying the sacks on her shoulders. She was a respected public figure in Cascade, and the town closed its schools to celebrate her birthday each year. When Montana passed a law forbidding women to enter saloons, the mayor of Cascade granted her an exemption. In 1903, at age 71, Fields retired from star route mail carrier service. She continued to babysit many Cascade children and owned and operated a laundry service from her home. Fields died in 1914 at Columbus Hospital in Great Falls, but she was buried outside Cascade. In 1959, actor and Montana native Gary Cooper wrote an article for Ebony in which he said, "Born a slave somewhere in Tennessee, Mary lived to become one of the freest souls ever to draw a breath, or a .38." Best I can tell she is holding an 1876 Winchester carbine with a 22" barrel In the 1976 documentary South by Northwest, "Homesteaders", Fields is played by Esther Rolle

  18. Oh yea, I have done all kinds of research on Hummingbirds and their migration patterns. When I first moved here just for giggles I saw Hummingbird feeders on sale at TSC store here so I bought one and then researched when I should fill it and hang it. Within about a week I had about 4 birds fighting over it so I went and bought another one and it another week I had to go buy another and the first summer I was here I had 6 feeders up and about 40 to 50 birds. I would set in my carport and watch them and there was times I thought I was going to get speared by one chasing another through the carport and I could feel the wind from their wings on my ears. I still enjoy sitting out side watching them but the last couple years I have not had the numbers of birds I did have back 6 or 8 years ago. I am beginning to wonder if the climate changing is having an effect on their migrations? I think the last bumpus year I had of birds was the year before that drought hit the southwest real hard and made it hard on them to find food during their migration. I hope to have more birds this year.................

  19. I agree to an extent but there's still that pesky property rights issue. As a semi-conservative state TN has gone to great lengths to preserve those rights as far as weapons are concerned.

  20. Gallatin Gun IDPA will host and indoor low light match on June 14th. Set up is at 5:00PM, match start at 6:00PM. We have classes for any gun with a weapon mounted light (pistol and PCC shoot together), Hand held light and red dot/lasers. We will also have the regular IDPA classes for those that do not have or do not wish to shoot low light. Light classes and regular IDPA will score separately. Round count should be around 70. Pre register on Practiscore is helpful. https://practiscore.com/galatin-gun-indoor-low-light-match-at-sumner-gun/register

  21. People with permits shouldn't have to worry about looking for signs or any other weapons charges. That is the whole point of buying the stupid permit in the first place isn't it or so I thought? It is kind of dumb when you pay 75 bucks for a class, a little over 100 for a permit, take the time for a class, and then turn around and you are legal at Kroger but illegal here or you have to look for a sign here. Many other states have it a lot cheaper with less restrictions than what we have here.

  22. From what I understand Beale Street property association has some arrangement with the city of Memphis but I still can't see how metal detectors are put up on a public street frisking everyone and that is legal. You can avoid the whole frisking by going down there before night time but still it is very odd that is done on a public street. Now that our bright lightbulb politicians and the NRA lobbyist 'reformed' our gun laws in such a 'great' way this year, in theory, metal detectors can be set up at any public property and you can be disarmed. So i'm sure this new law will do nothing but encourage metal detectors everywhere like TSA at the airports. I guess it makes people feel safe and does nothing to make people safer. Funny how these government clowns never thought of the need to run everyone through metal detectors when it was 'illegal' for us to carry in a bunch of locations in Tennessee. It proves all along they worry more about good folks carrying than the common street criminals.

  26. I thought I posted to this but I did purchase one at Sumner Gun and Supply about 2 weeks ago and I love it. I like to empty my magazines at least once a month to get the mag springs some rest and let them remain unloaded over night. I know that topic has been covered and it is an option for all anglers to decide to do. I tried one on my double stack Bersa 85 and man I wish I would have bought one of these years ago. They are the cats meow. It works on my single stack mags also but I didn't have as much problem with them as I did the doubles..............

  27. I have not seen any Red foxes here where I live but for past several years i have seen a small gray fox which I think is rare for this area but not sure. I have seen it several times while sitting out side in the evenings while watching the Hummingbirds fight over the feeders. I love whtching those little critters fight and fuss over 1 feeder when i have 8 feeders hanging up around the place. I think I have about 10 or 12 birds so far this year but expecting more as it gets hotter. I have had to fill the feeders twice since beginning of May. The gray fox was kind of skidish when it first showed up so I put a bowl of canned dog food at the corner of my yard next to a fence row and about sunset it will come out and eat some of the food. It's kinda of strange that my wild rabbit population has not seemed to get smaller as I have actually seen them out in the neighbors yard eating clover and the fox makes no attempt to chase them. I find it unique to have so many wild critters while living in town. I do have a very thick fence row of Honey Suckles and Briar bushes and in summer time cannot see neighbors house that is about 100 yards behind mine. The fence row runs about 15 blocks from Gallatin road to the first cross street down the road passed my house.

  33. Bingo. Original configuration, captured during the Russo-Japanese war of 1905. No crossbolt in the stock; early flat sights calibrated for the 200 gr roundnose version of the 7.62x54r cartridge as introduced in 1891; sling swivel on the magazine, the other end of the sling would have attached either to a corresponding swivel on the front band or with a hook attached to the sling which was hooked across the front band screw, there's still some question as to when the Russians switched to the latter arrangement. What you don't see in this picture is the Japanese characters inscribed in the heel of the stock identifying it as Japanese property, or the fact that this particular rifle has all Sestroryetsk parts marked according, an original matching rifle. 36. I agree about the government. It is especially onerous that I can't carry my firearm into the place where I have to go to renew my permit in person. As for the other, frankly, my way of thinking is that if it isn't 'worth it' to the owner of the property to post the sign in such a manner that it is easily spotted and clearly posted then it isn't 'worth it' to me to go on an Easter egg hunt to find the darned thing. I have been places where I didn't see a posting until I was on the way out because the way the door opened when I entered covered the sign up. You know what? I legitimately did not see the sign, carried into those places and no one ever knew because I was carrying concealed. Honestly, I think a lot of places post - and probably intentionally put the sign where it isn't front and center - just to shut the bedwetters up. If, however, they have a very obvious sign clearly posted then I take that to mean they are more serious about said posting. As OhShoot has said, before, I go to a restaurant to eat not to read signs. I am not encouraging anyone else to adopt my mindset and, as I said, I generally avoid places that I know are posted whenever I can. Further, I view a business as different from a person's home.

  37. That is why I never plan on attending any of these type of events. My pockets are very shallow and I don't want to get blown up by some idiot wearing a vest full of ball bearings and something that makes it go pop that will be standing in a crowd waiting to get in and desides it's time to go get his virgins!! Yea I am kinda of a pessimist about some things and thats just one of them.

  40. +1 on the Maglula Uplula. If I know I'm heading to the range I'll load everything up beforehand so I'm not clicking time while in the range. I normally go to a place that's by the hour. I'll dump 10 magazines then reload. Saves my thumbs on harder mag followers. Like monkey said price won't change more than a few on either side of $30 anywhere. Well worth it.

  41. I have a Maglula Uplula that works great on Glock and Beretta 9mm mags. It's rated for 9mm to .4ACP. I don't know if it would work on .380ACP or not. http://www.maglula.com/product/uplula-9mm-to-45acp/ I also have their AR-15 mag loader and it works well with Magpul PMags. http://www.maglula.com/product/m-16-ar-15-lula-5-56-223/ You can buy their products online at pretty much any of the larger on-line gun or parts shop like PrimaryArms.Com, Brownell's, and Midway. They're also available on Amazon and some sites you might not expect like NewEgg.com. Some local shops also carry them. I think I've seen them at Academy before. Prices vary a little, but expect to pay about $30'ish.
