  1. I have had a few folks ask me about my avatar so I guess I will explain it. That is an actual picture of a female Doberman giving the fireman a kiss because he risked his life to go back into a burning building to rescue her 5 pups that were less than a month old and when he layed them down beside her on a blanket and sat down she came up and thanked him with a kiss and a reporter caught it and shot a picture of it. People said dogs are not to smart but she knew what he did without any doubt in my mind anyway...........

  5. While I'm encouraged by the activity over the last week, I'm afraid substantial damage has been done over the last year. Put as bluntly as I can do it, blind partisan rhetoric ran a huge number of people off. I know I've said it a million times, but guns are an American thing - not simply a Republican thing. A few handfuls of voices so poisoned the air here that a lot of our members simply left. They didn't protest. They didn't whine in PM's or in threads. They just logged out. Heck, I'm the admin who likes to talk about big topics and there have been plenty of days lately where I've just not wanted to engage with some of these folks. I love a good debate - but there wasn't really any debate in that politics subforum. So we were faced with a choice - to continue to let this slowly choke out any community here - or to find some other path. We chose the latter. I'm not sure what the future will hold. I know that I can speak for David when I say that we really appreciate the core community here. The switch from vBulletin to IPB hasn't been the smoothest. I know David continues to try to tweak both the configuration of the board as well as working with the vendor. But, I think traffic is down for two reasons (especially on high end stuff like your optic.) One, Hillary isn't coming to get your guns. People have spent money they didn't have over the last 6 years - and now we're in a down period. But, two we've run a bunch of eyeballs off. It's going to take some time to build that back. I appreciate you guys in the meantime.

  7. The size of the hailstone created has more to do with the time spent in the cloud than the size of the original droplet. In more severe storms the stone can get pulled up repeatedly, each time forming a new layer of ice, however most stones pick up their layers through the process of accretion, either by contact with super-cooled droplets which have not yet turned solid, passing through layers of water vapor, or even by combining with smaller stones already formed. In each case, time spent in the freezing layers determines the size of the final hailstone ...

  9. I for one, really miss the politics section. It was usually the first forum I visited, followed by General Chat. I know this is a gun forum, but those are my two favorite forums. I think part of that is, because this is a gun forum, most of us are like-minded and share the same interests. I just like hanging out with a bunch of other guys that for the most part, think like I think, and like what I like. Sure, there were some posts that I didn't like, or agree with, but I have thick skin and realize people have differing opinions, and I can respect that, as long as others can respect my opinions too. I actually like the discourse, as it gives me a peek into the way other people might think, and gives me a different perspective on an issue. It probably won't change my belief, but at least I can get an insight as to why someone might think that way. One of the trends happening now all over America is, if someone doesn't like what you have to say, then they shut you down. In a way this feels a bit like that. That forum was a great place to vent. I am a conservative that lives in a world of liberals. My work is filled with them, my main hobby is filled with them, and my family is all liberal, so I generally just keep quiet around them all. For me, the forum was a good outlet. I really like the idea of a politics section not showing up in the new posts feed, but think making it a paid members only section will limit differing points of view.

  10. TN / GA / AL Training Group On SATURDAY June 10 we will hold the first summer meeting for the TN/GA/AL Regional Suarez Int Training Group! Instructor: Tier 1 Suarez Int Staff Instructor Randy HarrisLocation: The usual place- Phillips/Edwards Farm 763 County Rd 332 Pisgah AL 35765 Time: 9AM CENTRAL time - 3PM CENTRAL timePrice: $60 - pay at class cash or check. What you need to bring: Pistol, pistol magazines and at least 200 rounds of ammo. Revolvers are welcome if you want to party like it is 1899. We will work on smoothing out our pistol skills and will shoot several challenging drills and work to be more competent and confident with the weapon we carry most...our pistol. Rifles are awesome but they are not always close by. The pistol is far more likely to be the weapon you will have in hand be it robbery, terrorism or whatever. This will give participants a chance to shoot some timed and scored drills and get a feel for where their skill level is and see where they can improve.

  11. At one time I collected Mosins by production year and Arsenal....I had an office/gunroom and I was like a hog in slop. Mosins, Mausers, SKSs, AKs, Oh My! I've narrowed my collection way way down as I am getting older....found these pics and thought I'd share them.

  16. Yea, the 2 guns I mentioned he showed me were the guns his 2 teenage sons I went to school with deer hunted with and put meat on the table back then. They hunter our ranch with me many times because we had about 1000 acres of timber that backed up to Cheatham County Game Reserve and only thing seperating our land from theirs was Barbed wire fence so we always had plenty of deer back then to hunt.

  17. Another way to think is, how much less would they have been worth to the people using them to put food on the table then? Same thing could be said for all the muskets bored out to be sod buster shotguns. Converting military arms to civilian use has gone on for along time. I hate to see something chopped up, but I understand it.

  18. Back when I was kid my grandfather gave me a rifle that he said a friend of his down the road had sporterized back many years ago. I took it out with some of the ammo he had left and shot it. After shooting it because the gun shot very good and was very accurate I went to seek out hunting grade ammo for it. I didn't even know what caliber or manufacturer was but the guy at the store knew. He told me it was a 7 MM Mauser and they did have some hunting ammo for it. I was 17 at the time and used it that season for deer hunting. Bagged 3 deer with it and only fire 3 rounds. I went and spoke to the man that had sporterized it and he showed me a 6.5 Japanese rifle and a 6.5 Intalian Carcano that he had also sporterized. The latter of the 2 was the same type rifle that Oswald used to shoot kennedy in 1963 but his was not sporterized. Today when I think about all of the guns the man sporterized and I often wonder what those same guns would be worth today if they were still in original condition?....................

  19. Okay, now your question makes sense. The former state law said suppressors were illegal, but there was written into the law an exception that if you had the federal tax stamp for the suppressor, it was legal. Now it's no longer illegal period by state law, just still illegal for the feds without the tax stamp. Practically, you are correct. It really changes nothing except that now if you have one illegally, only the feds could go after you. As I said before, it was a bill to prepare for the hopeful repeal of suppressors from the NFA so no one could get in trouble if they are taken off. Whatever the case, I am always for removing "illegal" things from state law when they are pointlessly illegal-even if it doesn't make much difference practically.

  21. It's a 38. I jumped the gun for sure, it's about to far gone, the timing off as well as the firing pin problem. I let my neighbor take it home, he's a cool older guy who likes working on stuff little this. I'll probably just let him have it. He has a nice collection, I'm trying to talk him out of his 1911 Army Ran but it's not going well . Thanks for the info.

I made it bedside gun with addition of Inforce weapon light, about which I also have nothing but good things to report: - OS

  25. Don't let it bother you that your thoughts maybe incoherent about that day or many days following it. Everyone had different thoughts and feelings about what was going on back then. Your remembering what took place that night in the restaurant was point on. I have said many times that if the news medias were required to show the films of the planes hitting the towers every time they broadcasted the daily news it would remain a reminder of what America experienced that day and maybe all of the young people would feel differently today and appreciate what America stands for. For a brief period of time America was 1 nation under God and indivisable but like you said, "Sadly it didn't last." Politics got in the way.............JMHO

It literally brings home the bacon...and a ton more pork too :-). I have a 16" RR upper too but suppressed it is just too long for fast moving pigs (and any other things needing blown up...lol)

  29. Looks good. You may want to pick up a one piece mount for that optic. Handguard flex can mess with accuracy on long shots. I have had great luck with Burris PEPR mounts. They're reasonably priced.

  30. Well there is a complete upgrade to the forum software pending release soon, and the author of the Classifieds is focusing on getting his software updated to match that. I am hoping that once those two things happen, this will sort itself out. It is extremely odd that the following seems to be true: Regular forum emails are going out. I can see evidence of that in the SendGrid dashboard and am receiving them myself. The only thing not sending with any regularity are Classifieds notification emails, but for some reason "Pinned" advertisements do send. The Classifieds uses the email features of the forum software. So it should be working for all or none, but isn't.

  36. On that Tuesday morning, I had just walked out the door of 1WTC to get a cup of coffee. There had been a holdup that morning in me being able to get up to the area I was working, so I walked outside for some reason instead of walking back down into the transit mall. I had just crossed Broadway when I saw a flash of light in a window and felt the air suddenly moving past me back towards the buildings. It couldn't have been more than a fraction of second before I heard and felt the shockwave and heat, but I distinctly remember it being long enough that 'explosion' went through my mind before I felt it. There was almost instantly a wave of people in the streets fleeing in panic - and it was hard to do anything but move along with them. One of the strange things about working in the World Trade Center was looking out a window down at the top of jumbo jets on final approach to LaGuardia. We all thought it was a terrible accident - until the second plane hit. I remember watching in absolute shock as the second plane hit - it was going so fast. I remember watching the top of 1WTC tumble end over end as it fell. I can see everything about the scene in my mind. To this day, I can see it when I close my eyes at night. And, if I think about it I can smell and taste it. The rest of the day was a blur - I worked the site from the early afternoon until around 0400EDT the next day. I'll never forget walking out of the site and out of lower Manhattan. As we reached Union Square, people were lining the streets with water and food. I was fortunate to get to spend the next 9 months on the rescue and recovery. It was a time of healing, as truthfully I should have been one of the people we never found - my office was on the 78th floor on the side of impact. Had I been at my desk, I would have been vaporized. That event certainly affected my professional trajectory for the next several years. Things like that change a person. Over the years, I've had to quit thinking about why I lived that day and 2977 others did not. It truthfully affected my faith - I've have a hard time with the word 'blessed' in the way that it's used in contemporary forms. But, I try to live each day with the memory that there were 2977 people who didn't get to come home that day. I try not to squander the fact that I'm still alive.
