  1. I do hope the political section is brought back as I'm sure it will be for several reasons: 1) Healthy debate regarding how the country is run benefits everyone involved. That's not just on the national level but local as well. 2) I often find it very educational as things may be pointed out that I, or others may never have considered. 3) This is a forum localized to the state of Tennessee so we all share common interests and a greater sense of community than other national forums. 4) Old men are going to sit around and bitch about politics. It's a simple fact of life. I think the Internet Is the modern day corner barbershop. 5) Some of our members are news/political junkies. We all may be able to learn from what they find that we don't have the time for. Not sure what else there is to add that hasn't already been said or considered by management and everyone else involved. Finally, as this has happened before, it really should come as no surprise to us regulars that have been here for years. That's a testament to the comraderie this forum has developed. I think we overwhelmingly were against Obama, but lately there has been what resembles a Trump obsession if not outright worship that bewoe those who don't tow the line. We've gone from one extreme to another. That is just not right. I was raised to respect others opinions and live my life that way. I enjoy hearing and listening to other opinions as it can be enlightening and imho is necessary for any kind of civilized society....but will also reserve the right to retort when the rhetoric gets a little too deep. That's applies to being face to face with someone or tapping away on the internet. That's just who I am. Take it for what you all will, I've got a pretty thick skin. Seems like there are many that need to grow one and not get so bent out of shape when others have a different opinion.

  4. So when she woke up in the morning, I warned her before she left the bedroom. "I dyed the Heathen's hair purple." She just mumbled and left the room. The dye I used is semi-permanent. I didn't bleach it first, it was designed to go over the natural hair color. The wife's response was something along the lines of "... as long as it comes out by the time school starts..." I count that as a win. For the record, I am a reformed punk. I dyed my hair blue for my senior yearbook pictures (the only once that were color back in those days.) I wore my hair way past my shoulders until just a few years ago. And it has been neon blue, neon green, neon red, blonde, black, etc... At one point and time I had anything that could be pierced, pierced. 37 of them to be precise. Yes. Four times for those wondering. I am covered head to toe in tattoos. Both of my ears are currently gauged to 5/8" and those are my only piercings now. There are several here that have met me, and everyone has been awesome, but I am sure that I am not what someone expects. In short, I embrace individuality. I was thrilled when my daughter suggested dying her hair. I never pressured her toward it. Same as when she asked to get her ears pierced, at seven or eight I believe. I never mentioned or pushed for it. I just waited for her to ask. That is how she got into shooting sports. I made her play soccer for four years, and she hated it. She asked on her own to join the 4H Shooting Sports Team as soon as she was old enough. I told her that in addition to mandatory musical extra curricular activities (orchestra and band) she had to have one other one. She chose shooting sports. And she is a rock star at it. With purple hair.

  7. That's something I really respect about you, Greg. And, maybe truthfully one of the things we need to get comfortable with is a much smaller community - closer to maybe 2009 numbers than 2017 numbers. We've got a lot of people who bring different life experiences to the table. Respect for those experiences is important. Using the two of us is an example - we may see Trump differently. But, that doesn't matter. That small difference of opinion is tempered by the huge number of things that I've got a great deal of respect for you for (work ethic, community involvement, the financial choices you and your wife have made, the kids you guys have raised, etc.) Community is hard. But it's worth it. That's what we're trying to figure out.

  8. Okay. The three of us have probably never agreed on anything, and probably never will again; but we agree on this. The “Off Topic” section is what keeps most any forum going. I think use of the forum has dropped off, but I don’t think it’s because of political discussions, but I may be wrong. I don’t have any data to back that up; just general observations. I think it’s due to the software updates. Navigation is just a PITA with the new software. This election has split the country. I think generally the people on a gun forum are good with what’s going on, the liberals on the left; not so much. But we need to have open discussions. I don’t see why the offended parties can’t just not click on a thread instead of sending those that want to discuss politics to another forum. But I fully understand this is not a democracy and I am only offering my opinion as a paid benefactor.

  14. I'll add another harbinger of doom by signing onto this sentiment. The lot of us would probably argue about what to get on a free pizza we'd be splitting if the chance came about, but we agree on this. It might have to be a phase in type of deal, but I think these steps could be a good start to keep it from becoming akin to Reddit... 1) Establish politics as a benefactor only sub-forum. 2) Moderators given power to keep debates on topic (fully admitting I'm as bad at this as anyone else) and lock a thread if it gets too heated for a cooling down period. Eg: if the topic is a random aspect about healthcare, Hillary's emails aren't being discussed as an aside. 3) Find a way to remove any politics from popping up in the dashboards or areas that let people know about new content. 4) Refine as needed, and don't be afraid to give vacations to those who blow off the rules after a warning or two and bans for when that isn't enough. I'm sure others might have more/better ideas.

  17. Interestingly, the anti-Trump voices were not the ones complaining. Rather, the people who took vocal offense were actually the reverse. When you look at the data, a lot of our moderates simply logged out. Anecdotally, politics wasn't what interested them in the community - and as it took over the 'Unread Content' section - they just left. You might think that a gun forum would skew to the right - and you're mostly correct. But, it's not nearly the percentage of our population that you might think - nor does it skew as far to the right as you might think. In a community as large as ours, we resemble the population at large more closely than you might think. I think that's what caused us to press the pause button for a bit. It begs the question - what do you do when small segment of your population is poisoning the community at large? I have avoided booting a couple of folks that I probably shouldn't have. They bring nothing of value to our community and suck the air out of otherwise good dialog. Y'all certainly know that I like talking about big topics. But we've got to figure out a way to do it that makes sense and doesn't hurt the community at large. Feel free to discuss.

  18. You ever used Windows 8? It's not the software. I think traffic is down because gun owners aren't under attack by a CREDIBLE foe. Obama sold over 100 million guns. We joke about him being the greatest gun salesman of all time, but he really was. People were convinced for almost 8 years that they could lose their guns. By the end, most knew that even Obama couldn't destroy they second amendment. Now, there is NO panic. We are left with some folks that just love guns, and a few that probably don't.

  19. "Well regulated" means to be in proper order, to be calibrated correctly, or in the case of Militias, to be practiced and effective. It has nothing whatsoever to do with government oversight, in fact it is the absolute opposite of that in its 2nd Amendment meaning, intending the "government" powerless to regulate the keeping and bearing of arms specifically. From the period: In 1623, Virginia forbade its colonists to travel unless they were "well armed"; in 1631 it required colonists to engage in target practice on Sunday and to "bring their peeces to church." In 1658 it required every householder to have a functioning firearm within his house and in 1673 its laws provided that a citizen who claimed he was too poor to purchase a firearm would have one purchased for him by the government, which would then require him to pay a reasonable price when able to do so. In Massachusetts, the first session of the legislature ordered that not only freemen, but also indentured servants own firearms and in 1644 it imposed a stern 6 shilling fine upon any citizen who was not armed.- U.S., Congress, Senate, "The Right to Keep and Bear Arms," Report of the Subcommittee on the Constitution of the Committee on the Judiciary, p. 3. Noah Webster wrote "Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe." George Mason told the Virginia delegates the the Monarch's endeavor "to disarm the people; that [that] . . . was the best and most effectual way to enslave them." and he is quoted in saying "I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people except for a few public officials." Tench Coxe, corresponding with James Madison, described the Second Amendment's overriding goal as a check upon the national government's standing army: "As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people duly before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the next article in their right to keep and bear their private arms." and "Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Is it feared, then, that we shall turn our arms each man against his own bosom. Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an Americans." I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people except for a few public officials. 24. So it is no secret that my heathen was raised around guns. She has been shooting since she was four years old. She started with a single shot bolt action .22 rimfire rifle and has progressed to where she can and does shoot an AR at the range. As she turned 9 last year she was eligible for 4H Shooting Sports this season. We signed her up and her first practice was in April. At her very first practice her coach inquired as to her experience shooting. I explained that she had a handful of years under her and I hoped he didn't have to unteach too much of what I had taught her. To my mild surprise he stated that she was a pure natural and asked if she would be interested in shooting the first match of the season, less than two months away. The Heathen is right handed, but left eye dominant. I have raised her to shoot left handed rifle. I am also cross dominant and it has never hindered me to shoot off-hand to my dominant eye. The coaches embraced this and let her do her own thing. They are all very impressed with her. They call her a natural and have been teaching her on Target Air Rifle, Sport Air Rifle, Target .22 and Sport .22. She also shoots archery. With a recurve. Nearly alone in that discipline as nearly everyone else shoots compound (bare, hunting and target.) The coaches are awesome, and have gone as far as to special order her a left handed Target Air Rifle and a left handed Target .22. They have that much faith in her talent. And on to that talent. Saturday was a dreary rainy day in Kentucky. But it didn't stop her. It was her first competition with less than two months experience on a Target Air Rifle. She placed 3rd. We are beyond thrilled.

  29. It's fairly easy to make a "diy minnow aerator", just google whats in quotation marks and you'll get lots of hits & tips. I made one when I decided to try spider rigging for crappie, still out in the shed. I was able to keep minnows for several days, a few would die off daily but I bought like 3-4 dozen when I was experimenting. I used a fish tank aerator (110v) so that may/may not have had something to do with it. Keep the water you get when you buy the minnows, and then you need to "prepare" tap water to rid it of the chlorine which kills minners pretty quick. There are lots of good reviews of the Engle Bait cooler that the spider rigging guys rave about, they are a bit pricey but with the cost of minners, and you are dedicated to spider rigging, then it's $$ well spent. Using plastic for crappie is not hard, you just have to move the plastic bait a bit to give it "life" similar to a real minner if you are using 'em under a float or casting/retrieve the lure. I troll 99% of the time so I just have to find the right color and speed and depth the crappie are wanting that particular day. If you guys are after bass, well, no comment on that. LOL

  35. I doubt there will be anything done here to change how we are doing things. Trump made an attempt to try and do something but was shut down by Liberal courts. I don't think it would have prevented anything that is going to happen that may be in the plans of the terrorists but at least it was an attempt to put something on the burners for the terrorist to think about. Now with the courts seemingly on the side of the terrorists they know they still can enter as they want to into this country. As for stopping anything from happening, we saw a good example of how things don't work in San Bernadino when the neighbor of the bad guys suspected something but was afraid to bring it to the attention of authorities for fear of racial profiling. That proves that the statement IF YOU SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING does not work...........JMHO

  36. I'll add one addition to my comment above. If money is tight or you have other goals for the funds, I understand if the wife doesn't understand the purchases. In many cases though, our wives are not fans of the brown spirits, and don't understand why we need so many kinds, especially if they are happy with just about any clear spirits with sweetener of some kind added. 37. This attack was just plain ole terrorism. They do it for effect. There will be some numbing over time, so they may need to get a little uglier as time goes on. Then there are the "experts" that are going to prevent it. One of the key elements of successful terrorism is that you can't prevent it. Kill em all, and then kill a few more. That's the terrorist's worst nightmare.

  38. No, I've actually bought more than that in one purchase many times, but the wife still doesn't understand and never will. My larger purchases are usually for really good store picks or for favorites that are being phased out, such as age stated products that are losing their age statement...Elijah Craig 12 year that now has no age statement to name one of many. 39. Even though the politics section has been eliminated, political threads will continue to pop up whether it be under general discussion or any of the other possibilities. The heart of this forum is firearms and like it or not politics will always be connected to our ownership and use of them. I too get a little frustrated with the rants that go on in these threads and they do veer off on tangents but such is the nature of any group of people gathered and having a conversation. Once politics or religion is mentioned, some people get quite riled and start spewing. I am in favor of keeping a political section but make it a benefactor only option. My other suggestion would be to make sections like members if it is even possible. We have the ignored user option under account settings so we don't see their entries could we do this for an entire forum section?

As I aged I have gravitated towards the rule of three; more with an eye towards defense and survival. 3 each: primary handguns- in my case M9/92FS. Plenty of mags. 3 each: backup handguns in same caliber as primary same with rifles and shotguns. Some rifles I have more than three..

  44. I'd recommend the PPQ Model 1 or 2. I have M2s in both 9mm and 45. Because initially I could not find a M1 Navy version. I'm happy with both, and will probably someday pick up a Navy model as well. The M2 9mm is fantastic. Trigger is perfection. Reset is very tangible and audible. And very easy to get succeeding shots off if you like holding at the reset point. The M2 in 45 is very nice as well, but has a bit more muzzle flip than I had expected from it. I still have a couple Glocks, in fact took out my 19 last week. But of the two, I'd have to say I prefer the PPQ. jmo

  48. There is some wisdom in having multiples and the reasons are well covered above. But like hlb14 mentioned above, having a (trusted and proven) duplicate of your carry gun for training and practice makes sense to me. I want another G19, but own a 17 & a 26 as well. Functional transition, magazine, ammo, and holster interchangeability and compatibility make sense to me. I reread this thread and don't recall reading that, if, God Forbid, you are involved in a self defense shooting...your gun will more likely than not, be taken into evidence and for a long time. Badguys have friends and family that may well wish to seek retribution. After all, you just smoked their source of income or drugs, perhaps a member of the gang they recently been jumped into, their "baby daddy" or "baby momma" ( criminals come in all shapes, sexes, and sizes). Being able to remain armed with a reliable handgun whose format you are intimately familiar with (same trigger pull, manual of arms, sights etc.) just makes sense to me. Just food for thought and the opinion of an old fart.
