I do hope the political section is brought back as I'm sure it will be for several reasons: 1) Healthy debate regarding how the country is run benefits everyone involved. That's not just on the national level but local as well. 2) I often find it very educational as things may be pointed out that I, or others may never have considered. 3) This is a forum localized to the state of Tennessee so we all share common interests and a greater sense of community than other national forums. 4) Old men are going to sit around and bitch about politics. It's a simple fact of life. I think the Internet Is the modern day corner barbershop. 5) Some of our members are news/political junkies. We all may be able to learn from what they find that we don't have the time for. Not sure what else there is to add that hasn't already been said or considered by management and everyone else involved. Finally, as this has happened before, it really should come as no surprise to us regulars that have been here for years. That's a testament to the comraderie this forum has developed. I think we overwhelmingly were against Obama, but lately there has been what resembles a Trump obsession if not outright worship that bewoe those who don't tow the line. We've gone from one extreme to another. That is just not right. I was raised to respect others opinions and live my life that way. I enjoy hearing and listening to other opinions as it can be enlightening and imho is necessary for any kind of civilized society....but will also reserve the right to retort when the rhetoric gets a little too deep. That's applies to being face to face with someone or tapping away on the internet. That's just who I am. Take it for what you all will, I've got a pretty thick skin. Seems like there are many that need to grow one and not get so bent out of shape when others have a different opinion.9 points

If a person doesn't like the politics section, why couldn't said person simply stay out of it? I'm about to run out of patience with habitually offended folks.9 points

This is all getting to be too cumbersome. Are we all really such a bunch of nancies that we can't take a little political dispute? Maybe I need a vacation.6 points

So when she woke up in the morning, I warned her before she left the bedroom. "I dyed the Heathen's hair purple." She just mumbled and left the room. The dye I used is semi-permanent. I didn't bleach it first, it was designed to go over the natural hair color. The wife's response was something along the lines of "... as long as it comes out by the time school starts..." I count that as a win. For the record, I am a reformed punk. I dyed my hair blue for my senior yearbook pictures (the only once that were color back in those days.) I wore my hair way past my shoulders until just a few years ago. And it has been neon blue, neon green, neon red, blonde, black, etc... At one point and time I had anything that could be pierced, pierced. 37 of them to be precise. Yes. Four times for those wondering. I am covered head to toe in tattoos. Both of my ears are currently gauged to 5/8" and those are my only piercings now. There are several here that have met me, and everyone has been awesome, but I am sure that I am not what someone expects. In short, I embrace individuality. I was thrilled when my daughter suggested dying her hair. I never pressured her toward it. Same as when she asked to get her ears pierced, at seven or eight I believe. I never mentioned or pushed for it. I just waited for her to ask. That is how she got into shooting sports. I made her play soccer for four years, and she hated it. She asked on her own to join the 4H Shooting Sports Team as soon as she was old enough. I told her that in addition to mandatory musical extra curricular activities (orchestra and band) she had to have one other one. She chose shooting sports. And she is a rock star at it. With purple hair.4 points

That's something I really respect about you, Greg. And, maybe truthfully one of the things we need to get comfortable with is a much smaller community - closer to maybe 2009 numbers than 2017 numbers. We've got a lot of people who bring different life experiences to the table. Respect for those experiences is important. Using the two of us is an example - we may see Trump differently. But, that doesn't matter. That small difference of opinion is tempered by the huge number of things that I've got a great deal of respect for you for (work ethic, community involvement, the financial choices you and your wife have made, the kids you guys have raised, etc.) Community is hard. But it's worth it. That's what we're trying to figure out.3 points

Okay. The three of us have probably never agreed on anything, and probably never will again; but we agree on this. The “Off Topic” section is what keeps most any forum going. I think use of the forum has dropped off, but I don’t think it’s because of political discussions, but I may be wrong. I don’t have any data to back that up; just general observations. I think it’s due to the software updates. Navigation is just a PITA with the new software. This election has split the country. I think generally the people on a gun forum are good with what’s going on, the liberals on the left; not so much. But we need to have open discussions. I don’t see why the offended parties can’t just not click on a thread instead of sending those that want to discuss politics to another forum. But I fully understand this is not a democracy and I am only offering my opinion as a paid benefactor.3 points

After thinking about it I came to the same conclusion. I ignore a large amount of topics on here that don't interest me. Somehow, life has continued for me.3 points

I will discuss the rifle and specific load I would use on the terrorist. For that little turd that blew himself up in Manchester, I would use my .458 SOCOM with 300 grain TTSX solids. Get some liver slurry all over the little snowflakes that are cowering in the corner.2 points

I'll add another harbinger of doom by signing onto this sentiment. The lot of us would probably argue about what to get on a free pizza we'd be splitting if the chance came about, but we agree on this. It might have to be a phase in type of deal, but I think these steps could be a good start to keep it from becoming akin to Reddit... 1) Establish politics as a benefactor only sub-forum. 2) Moderators given power to keep debates on topic (fully admitting I'm as bad at this as anyone else) and lock a thread if it gets too heated for a cooling down period. Eg: if the topic is a random aspect about healthcare, Hillary's emails aren't being discussed as an aside. 3) Find a way to remove any politics from popping up in the dashboards or areas that let people know about new content. 4) Refine as needed, and don't be afraid to give vacations to those who blow off the rules after a warning or two and bans for when that isn't enough. I'm sure others might have more/better ideas.2 points

We agree on more than you think. If I didn't like you and respect your opinion, I'd simply ignore you rather than engage you in a discussion. The same goes for Erik, and pretty much every other member here.2 points

Interestingly, the anti-Trump voices were not the ones complaining. Rather, the people who took vocal offense were actually the reverse. When you look at the data, a lot of our moderates simply logged out. Anecdotally, politics wasn't what interested them in the community - and as it took over the 'Unread Content' section - they just left. You might think that a gun forum would skew to the right - and you're mostly correct. But, it's not nearly the percentage of our population that you might think - nor does it skew as far to the right as you might think. In a community as large as ours, we resemble the population at large more closely than you might think. I think that's what caused us to press the pause button for a bit. It begs the question - what do you do when small segment of your population is poisoning the community at large? I have avoided booting a couple of folks that I probably shouldn't have. They bring nothing of value to our community and suck the air out of otherwise good dialog. Y'all certainly know that I like talking about big topics. But we've got to figure out a way to do it that makes sense and doesn't hurt the community at large. Feel free to discuss.2 points

You ever used Windows 8? It's not the software. I think traffic is down because gun owners aren't under attack by a CREDIBLE foe. Obama sold over 100 million guns. We joke about him being the greatest gun salesman of all time, but he really was. People were convinced for almost 8 years that they could lose their guns. By the end, most knew that even Obama couldn't destroy they second amendment. Now, there is NO panic. We are left with some folks that just love guns, and a few that probably don't.2 points

"Well regulated" means to be in proper order, to be calibrated correctly, or in the case of Militias, to be practiced and effective. It has nothing whatsoever to do with government oversight, in fact it is the absolute opposite of that in its 2nd Amendment meaning, intending the "government" powerless to regulate the keeping and bearing of arms specifically. From the period: In 1623, Virginia forbade its colonists to travel unless they were "well armed"; in 1631 it required colonists to engage in target practice on Sunday and to "bring their peeces to church." In 1658 it required every householder to have a functioning firearm within his house and in 1673 its laws provided that a citizen who claimed he was too poor to purchase a firearm would have one purchased for him by the government, which would then require him to pay a reasonable price when able to do so. In Massachusetts, the first session of the legislature ordered that not only freemen, but also indentured servants own firearms and in 1644 it imposed a stern 6 shilling fine upon any citizen who was not armed.- U.S., Congress, Senate, "The Right to Keep and Bear Arms," Report of the Subcommittee on the Constitution of the Committee on the Judiciary, p. 3. Noah Webster wrote "Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe." George Mason told the Virginia delegates the the Monarch's endeavor "to disarm the people; that [that] . . . was the best and most effectual way to enslave them." and he is quoted in saying "I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people except for a few public officials." Tench Coxe, corresponding with James Madison, described the Second Amendment's overriding goal as a check upon the national government's standing army: "As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people duly before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the next article in their right to keep and bear their private arms." and "Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Is it feared, then, that we shall turn our arms each man against his own bosom. Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an Americans." I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people except for a few public officials. NOW is the time to buy, buy, buy. Buy guns. Buy ammo. Buy suppressors! Buy cheap, stack them deep. Anyone who comes back in 4 or 8 years (depending on circumstances) and cries about how the tide shifted the other direction and how expensive (or forbidden) certain firearms are, will get nothing but a mocking from me.2 points

I have thinned down my collection a good bit but have an affinity for SKS/AK stuff. I got out of my Mosin collecting--I only have a couple of K98s as far as bolt actions go. I am always looking for factory stocks/mags, especially in the SKS realm. I dont like aftermarket stuff and when I run across a deal on a "tacticool" SKS I try to rescue it. I looked high and low for a factory SKS stock before finally running across a Russian stock at a pawnshop in Nashville. I travel a lot and would like to know of any good local shops where you can find the "good stuff".1 point

I already give you the win for calling her Heathen. Lol My son asked for a mohawk at 8 and kept his hair that way for a long while. He would spray in different colored hair spray depending on where he was going since my kids' school is super (stupid) strict on it. I kept my hair waist length until a job loss a few years ago caused me to cut it. Too many bills, I needed an equal job quick. I did not have time for the "you don't look professional" bs. Most of the time it kept it black...you know Black No. 1. I have met clean cut scumbags and tat'd and pierced hardworking, family guys and gals that would drive 500 miles to help you out. Maybe if we teach our kids to see uniqueness as a real plus, they will make the world a little better.1 point

My limited research (about two minutes of googling) leads me to believe you should really check the receiver to make sure it's not a re-weld. It is a 7.62x51mm rifle, not .308. Kinda the same thing with shooting .30-06 out of an M1. Dimensionally more or less identical but far greater pressure out of the commercial round. Was not designed for the pressure....long story short. BTW, that is the complete oppposite of 5.56x45mm. In that case the commercial version is lower pressure.1 point

I haven't shot it yet, but here it is. It looks like Bubba's been ahold of the magazine, but it seems to work o.k. I believe Sarco has them in stock. There is a takedown tool, bore brush, pick, and grease can in the stock under the buttplate. So what is your opinion on firing commercial 308 ammo in this? The brochure I saw claimed that 308 ammo with any weight bullet would work fine, but the action is stamped 7.62 NATO.1 point

Really it's what you get use to doing and once you do it is like automatic and done in such a non thought action you don't notice your doing it. After you have done it for 40+ years it's like well oiled machine................1 point

Ever deleted photos for an hour? There's something that could be fixed. I'll add one addition to my comment above. If money is tight or you have other goals for the funds, I understand if the wife doesn't understand the purchases. In many cases though, our wives are not fans of the brown spirits, and don't understand why we need so many kinds, especially if they are happy with just about any clear spirits with sweetener of some kind added. Real problem is that the majority of the attacks in developed countries, "the terrorists" are not some outside force that needs to be prevented from entering the country, but resident nationals/citizens. Our worst mass shooting by a single person was the same, a native born citizen. (Pulse nightclub massacre). The "We're All Gonna Die Muslim Travel Ban" kind of pales in importance when the real war seems more about ideology, and you have millions of possible citizen perps. - OS1 point

This is an example of why the Second Amendment is in the Bill of Rights. It doesn't contain a commandment, order, authorization, or restriction of any kind. Since the entire bill of rights is written for the individual citizen, I cannot fathom why the Second Amendment would be different from the rest of it.1 point

We all have different interests. Guns are what brought us together here. On the steel guitar forum, one guy started a thread about what else do you do? After a few pages, the owner squashed it. "This is a steel guitar forum, not golf, bowling, guns, etc." However, it does get boring talking about tuning and setup issues all the time. Dead horse, ya know? Kinda like only talking to your wife about sex. (Ok, maybe not the best example, but you get my drift... ) I think it's good for folks, as they hang, to learn more about each other. HOWEVER, politics/religion can turn pretty nasty. Maybe the Benefactor idea is a good option.1 point

I think if we can't discuss politics here, I ask where would be left that makes it feel like a real discussion? Coming here to debate these issues was always enjoyable for me because the collective intellect of TGO is much higher than the population at large, and we certainly care more about the results of elections. I hope politics can come back, even if only a benefactors only sub-forum. Hell, that may be the best way to put an initial layer of QC on it. For my money, a place to have real debates is worth the price of admission, even if it does go off the rails from time to time. No kidding. In my recent move, I had to self-haul my ammo along with my guns separate from the rest of normal household goods that movers took care of. I got quite a decent workout in, and the word shortage never entered my mind.1 point

Back in my younger years I collected a little bit one of everything. As I aged I have gravitated towards the rule of three; more with an eye towards defense and survival. 3 each: primary handguns- in my case M9/92FS. Plenty of mags. 3 each: backup handguns in same caliber as primary same with rifles and shotguns. Some rifles I have more than three..1 point
