  1. ...dyed my 10 year old daughter's hair purple. I wonder what her mother will say when she wakes up in the morning? My daughter went to her first competition of the season last weekend (her second season competing) and brought home 2nd place in all three disciplines she shot in, primitive archery (recurve,) BB and Target Air. I asked her what she wanted as a reward. She wanted to dye her hair purple for the summer. Today was the last day of school, so after her 'promotion' from Elementary to Middle School this morning, I decided that we could dye her hair purple. Her mother is unaware. Tomorrow is going to be very exciting.

  2. I'll admit that I've kind of enjoyed looking at 'unread content' and seeing a gun board today.

  3. NOW is the time to buy, buy, buy. Buy guns. Buy ammo. Buy suppressors! Buy cheap, stack them deep. Anyone who comes back in 4 or 8 years (depending on circumstances) and cries about how the tide shifted the other direction and how expensive (or forbidden) certain firearms are, will get nothing but a mocking from me.

  4. Maybe, but it isn't like folks here couldn't use a bit of a break from the subject.

  8. Man, I'm gonna get beat about the head and shoulders, but... at least I'm able to admit when I'm wrong. Many of you have heard me express my dislike of the M&P series. I now have a .45 Shield on my hip. Wound up trading my trusty Glock 36 in. This feels better, holds one more round, shoots better and more comfortably... ... proceed with the beatings...

  9. I'm a city kid. Never been hunting in my life. Just not part of my upbringing. Consequently, my intro to guns was in the military and then the tactical/EBR era. Well, I've been thinking about getting a bolt action rifle for a minute and @robtattoo's for sale thread on that custom 280AI was the catalyst for me to get off my duff and get to it. (I came very close to getting it, but that weirdo caliber scared me off.) So after a little research I bought myself a Montana Rifle Company ASR in 308. It's got the absolute best trigger I have ever felt. It doesn't feel like it moves. It just breaks at 3#. It's nuts. The bolt design of the Model 1999 is a mixture of the Model 70 and the Mauser. She's a beautiful piece of work. I'm getting a killer discount on the optic from a friend of mine, but it's going to take a few weeks for that to come in. It's going to get a Nightforce NSX 3.5-15x50 MILR. My intent is to build a rifle that will forever be able to exceed my abilities. Here is the link to image gallery.

  12. Just remind her mom that it is not permanent and much cheaper than other rewards. Also, that helping your daughter to define herself prevents others from having negative influence. Congrats to her on the wins.

  15. I think if we can't discuss politics here, I ask where would be left that makes it feel like a real discussion? Coming here to debate these issues was always enjoyable for me because the collective intellect of TGO is much higher than the population at large, and we certainly care more about the results of elections. I hope politics can come back, even if only a benefactors only sub-forum. Hell, that may be the best way to put an initial layer of QC on it. For my money, a place to have real debates is worth the price of admission, even if it does go off the rails from time to time. No kidding. In my recent move, I had to self-haul my ammo along with my guns separate from the rest of normal household goods that movers took care of. I got quite a decent workout in, and the word shortage never entered my mind.

  16. Looks great! And good luck. I started hunting a little later in life myself. Also hunt with a .308 (Browning X-Bolt White Gold Medallion).

  17. Montana makes some great rifles. I picked up a Montana X2 in .300 Win mag a couple of months ago. You are right about their triggers. I really like mine. I went with stainless and a Kryptec Banshee Brown synthetic stock and a Zeiss Conquest HD5 3-15X42 scope. Cant wait to hear a range report on yours.

  28. Do tell, for sure. Maybe @robtattoo can come along and talk you into some wildcat raygun caliber that will take an elk at a half a mile. Politics has people stressed, but I wonder if a lot of folks stopped shooting regularly during the ammo shortage and just haven't started getting out again.

  38. Try crappie magnets. I use them vertical jigging or casting and love them. I'm a big fan of purple body and chartreuse legs. Crappie do switch color preference pretty often, if the bite stops try a different color. http://troutmagnet.com/crappie-magnet.html

  39. Madison clearly explained what 'well regulated' with regards to a militia means in The Federalist #46. and: So, according to the guy who helped write the Bill of Rights, "militia" means any citizen who is capable of fighting against a tyrannical federal government and in order to 'regulate' that militia officers would be chosen from among the militia by such governing bodies (local governments) to which the militia gives allegiance. Further, those local governments would 'unite and conduct' the actions of the militia. 'Well regulated' has nothing to do with who can and who cannot own arms. It has to do with the structure of a militia should such a militia be necessary in order to resist the over-reach of a tyrannical government.

  40. Something is wrong with that story. You don’t set-up a meet with someone that is probably armed so you can take their car. You take it from some poor sap on the street.

  41. There's really 2 different questions here. "What accuracy standards are we training to be able to achieve?"... and ..."what accuracy standard do we train with to achieve that?". For me personally (and professionally) we try to direct everything into the diaphragm to neck area (nipple to neck triangle) and/or the face (eyebrow to nose triangle) and that runs the complete circumference of the target ....front, back, sides. Those are vital zones and areas most likely to MAKE people stop what they are doing....not just hurt them and leave the decision to stop up to them. I'm not at all saying other areas don't hurt...I'm saying all we know about anatomy and biology leads us to those two areas being the most likely to stop people. As to standards to practice? I like smaller targets. The 3" shoot n see" targets are what I normally use in class as the "optimum" with an 8.5x11" sheet of paper behind it as "still acceptable". By using that we focus on a smaller area and are then most likely to keep even our "misses" in the vital zone area or at a minimum in the torso / minus 1 zone on an IDPA target or C zone of an IPSC target. In my own practice I personally use the pasters from the "shoot n see" targets as my target to aim for and anything within a hand span of that is acceptable which gives about a 3/4" target and a 6" Acceptable Zone. For distance (15yds to 50yds or farther?) I use a 45% IPSC steel target which pretty much covers diaphragm to neck or chin and inside the nipples on most people. By shooting smaller targets you get a better grasp of sight alignment and trigger control and can apply the same skills to hit at much farther distances. After a day of shooting at 3" targets at 5 yards a torso sized target at 25 is easy.
