  3. Rhienmetall makes the 120mm cannons for most of the NATO tanks now, and they are upgrading to a 130mm before too long. Don't have much on specs other than it has 1.5 times the energy that the current 120mm has. JJust out of boredom, I tracked down the specs of the current cannon and calculated out everything. The 120mm high pressure round (equivalent to our +p personal weapons loads) pushes the 22lb sabot @ 5700 ft/s. At a measly 11,112,873 ft/lbs of muzzle energy. The new one clocks in at 16,669,309 ft/lbs of muzzle energy, as they are using the same projectile and just increasing speed/effective range. Knew those things had some juice behind them, but holy smokes that is crazy. I'd be interested to know what kind of power some of those 8" and 10" battleship guns have if a little 5" gun has almost 17 million ft/lbs.

  4. I think that first guy was manning a cannon myself. He crammed some chain, broken swords, rock, and some ham bones left over from dinner last night in and fired away. The "If it will fit, fire away" became the slogan. Of course his real secret weapon was when he decided to put livestock in the catapult..........

  5. Nah, that was the guys who said "Crap! We're out of ammo but still have powder and the enemy is about to come over that rise. Find anything you can to stuff in there and shoot at them!" And canister shot was born...

  6. dunno, but he was probably also the guy that said "hey, what do we do with all these 3/4" ball bearings left over in the garage? ... Let's put them in a 120mm canister and blow them out of a tank!" And the beehive round was born.

  7. Because it's a sabot round. The only difference is the circumference of the petals holding the penetrator will be 130mm, instead of 120mm. <edit> posted that before scrolling down, looks like the others already answered.

  11. I wonder if the first prototypes with DU in the armor glowed softly lol. It is always easy for the guy in a secure office sitting in a nice soft chair to say "There is no danger from....". What he really means is "There is no danger to ME from...."

  12. There's really 2 different questions here. "What accuracy standards are we training to be able to achieve?"... and ..."what accuracy standard do we train with to achieve that?". For me personally (and professionally) we try to direct everything into the diaphragm to neck area (nipple to neck triangle) and/or the face (eyebrow to nose triangle) and that runs the complete circumference of the target ....front, back, sides. Those are vital zones and areas most likely to MAKE people stop what they are doing....not just hurt them and leave the decision to stop up to them. I'm not at all saying other areas don't hurt...I'm saying all we know about anatomy and biology leads us to those two areas being the most likely to stop people. As to standards to practice? I like smaller targets. The 3" shoot n see" targets are what I normally use in class as the "optimum" with an 8.5x11" sheet of paper behind it as "still acceptable". By using that we focus on a smaller area and are then most likely to keep even our "misses" in the vital zone area or at a minimum in the torso / minus 1 zone on an IDPA target or C zone of an IPSC target. In my own practice I personally use the pasters from the "shoot n see" targets as my target to aim for and anything within a hand span of that is acceptable which gives about a 3/4" target and a 6" Acceptable Zone. For distance (15yds to 50yds or farther?) I use a 45% IPSC steel target which pretty much covers diaphragm to neck or chin and inside the nipples on most people. By shooting smaller targets you get a better grasp of sight alignment and trigger control and can apply the same skills to hit at much farther distances. After a day of shooting at 3" targets at 5 yards a torso sized target at 25 is easy.

  13. Just to update and end-the-story, the sale went well at a dealer. A dealer my buyer is so tight with, I started thinking he may have even been employed there at some point. So no felonies committed in the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness. And buyer happy with his new acquisition.

  14. I heard about this on the radio earlier. They said it was a .40 cal. round. MILLINGTON, Tenn. — A 22-year-old is being airlifted to the Regional Medical Center after a shooting at a local shooting range. The unidentified victim was inside Top Brass Shooting Range around 2:30 p.m. when the gun went off, hitting him in the head. He was airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in critical condition. Public Safety Director Gary Graves told the media the victim was alone inside the shooting lanes when it happened. There were also four employees inside the business, but they reportedly didn’t see what happened. At this time, they are not saying whether the shooting was an accidental discharge or a suicide attempt. However, they did say they are not investigating this as a crime. http://wreg.com/2017/03/09/young-man-shot-at-millington-shooting-range/

  16. I love the M1 Carbine in .30 Cal so much that I started looking for a handgun in the caliber to match. My search led me to both of these. An AMT/IAI Automag III and a Ruger New Model Blackhawk - both in the awesome .30 Caliber Carbine.

  17. Sort of like a marine, when you're a tanker, it's never past or present... you're a tanker. Doesn't matter how you go in, we all come out the other side acting the same way lol Hell, when a navy seal tell you "that's a bad ass job" you know it's cool as hell because those guys get to play with things we don't even know exist.

  27. Yep I agree, sounds like the same kind of thinking. Next thing he will invent is the recycled beehive round... it will use depleted AA/AAA batteries instead of ball bearings. Or he could go high class and use the CR123 batteries use up in the military optics.

  28. How could a 120mm and 130mm gun fire the same projectile? The Yamato class Japanese battleships in WWII had the largest guns at 460mm firing a 3200lb projectile... 337 million ft-lbs with a range of 26 miles. The German Schwerer Gustav railway gun is the biggest ever. 800mm bore firing a 15,650lb projectile at 2700 ft/s... 1.77 billion ft-lbs.

  31. A few years ago there was a news report of a house near here, out in the country, being burglarized. The culprits didn't expect to find anyone home. They jumped in their truck and took off. The homeowner opened fire with his 30 carbine. Seems like one of his rounds struck the truck just right causing a mechanical failure and the truck careened off into the ditch. The sheriff arrested the suspects. It's was in the paper and on the 6 o'clock news at the time. I laughed, couldn't believe a 30 carbine could disable a vehicle like that.

  38. Careful, Zaya just changed the blend in this neo classic last fall. The label and the age statement both changed luckily making it easy to spot the new bottles. Gone is the "12 year old rum" changed to "a blend of 12 aged rums". New- VS Old- I'm currently stuck on Zacapa 23yr Solera. It's good for the price(around $50) and great straight or mixed. For slightly more affordable standouts, I prefer Plantation Barbados 5 yr, Pampero Aniversario Reserva Exclusiva in the $30ish range.

  39. It Died . . . . . . An old man, Mr. Wallace, was living in a nursing home. One day he appeared to be very sad and depressed. Nurse Tracy asked him if there was anything wrong. "Yes, Nurse Tracy,"' said Mr. Wallace. "My Private Part died today and I am very sad." Knowing her patients were a little forgetful and sometimes a little crazy, she replied, "Oh, I ' m so sorry, Mr. Wallace. Please accept my condolences." The following day Mr. Wallace was walking down the hall with his Private Part hanging out of his pajamas. He met Nurse Tracy. "Mr. Wallace," she said, "you shouldn't be walking down the hall like that. Please put your Private Part back inside your pajamas." "But, Nurse Tracy I can't." replied Mr. Wallace. "I told you yesterday that my Private Part died." "Yes," said Nurse Tracy, "you did tell me that, but why is it hanging out of your pajamas?" "Well," he replied, "today is the viewing."

  40. Things Women Post on the Internet . . . . A story posted by the wife of an acquaintance . . . . I gave him kudos for his response. I had lunch with 2 of my friends. One is engaged, one is a mistress and I am married (for 20+ years. We were chatting about our relationships and decided to amaze our men by greeting them at the door wearing a black bra, stiletto heels and a mask over our eyes. We agreed to meet in a few days to exchange notes.. Here's what happened: My Engaged Friend: The other night when my fiancé came over, he found me wearing only a black bra, tall stilettos and a mask. He saw me and said, 'You are the woman of my dreams. I love you' Then we made passionate love all night long The Mistress: Me too! The other night I met my lover at his office and I was wearing a raincoat. Under it I had only the black bra, heels and a mask over my eyes. When I opened the raincoat he didn't say a word, but he started to tremble and we had wild sex all night. Then I Had To Share My Story: When my husband came home I was wearing a black bra, black stockings, stilettos and a mask over my eyes. When he came in the door and saw me he said, ▼ ▼ ▼ ▼ "What's for dinner, Zorro?

  42. Adding to the list - here is another unique OLD 1911 you just don't see every day. This is a Spanish Llama "EXTRA" (Model VII) made in 1933. It says 9mm/38 on the side of the slide, but it refers to 9mm Largo (9x23mm) and not 9mm Luger/Parabellum (9x19mm). The .38 refers to .38 ACP, not Super. These old Llama's are not the cheap stuff Stoeger imported from the 1950's to today. These are real, tried n true, war horses that are a find when they come up. Significantly under-appreciated series, if you are looking for one. I've been fortunate to capture a couple of these . . . non-import marked . . . .

  44. There are a couple of YouTube videos of the 50 Thunder being fired and they are a little snappy to say the least. I've never fired any of Big magnum pistol calibers like the Casulls, S&W 460 or the 500 but I do have a T/C in the 45-70 Govt. that will get your attention with a 405 grain projectile. Not a great photo but these are mine. The one on the bottom is my .35 Remington deer hunting pistol, it's relatively tame compared to the 45-70 Govt.

  45. I have a S&W model 53 in .22 Remington Jet....basically a centerfire .22 I inherited this from my Dad along with 4 boxes of ammo, 6 SS inserts for .22lr and the apparently very rare .22LR cyclinder that came with it. The box had a cut out for the cyclinder but I understand Smith used the same box to sell the ones without the cyclinder....just didn't punch out the hole.

  47. If it were all small primers it wouldn't matter, but the large are different. You should be able to run your finger across the rim and feel a slight bulge where it feels like the primer isn't seated all the way. Large rifle primers are taller than large pistol primers.
