A pass thru is desirable. More damage and easier for them to bleed out. An arrow that goes half way in and stays effectively seals the wound and it takes a lot longer for the deer to bleed out. They can cover a lot of distance with the extra time.4 points

Well if this is gonna turn into a picture thread.......... I'm kinda fond of ol' slabsides myself. Its an old pic. I have more. BTW: I have 4 .38 Supers.4 points

Man, you just brought up some memories. The Sistema in the OP was bought by Mike.357. It then went to Mark@Sea. Suntzu was the next owner. I remember it well as I fondled it all the way up to Mark's house back in the day. It was an excellent specimen with a very unique serial number...and a loose rear sight.2 points

As with all things that can cause harm to people or damage to property, I suggest you host a TGO gathering and provide lots of whiskey. We'll figure it out.2 points

I don't have a favorite gun, but this struck me as funny. Last winter, my family stopped in at a Cabela's store for something. My two sons were looking around at the ammo shelf. They seemed quite surprised to find there was ammo for sale that fit their deer rifles.....257 Roberts. They also seemed shocked at the price....$2 plus a pop! I'd never thought about it, but until that time, they weren't aware factory ammunition was available for their rifles. Every round they've ever shot, they'd loaded themselves. It's funny what you take for granted kids know, that they actually don't know.2 points

After eight years of Obama running guns to Mexico and who knows where else, plus Hillary prostituting her State office and selling uranium to Russia, we're supposed to doggedly shame Kellyanne with bipartisan ethics charges for plugging Ivanka's products? Hell's bells, I don't care if Trump sets up a lemonade stand on the White House lawn! This political swamp is going to need a bigger drain.2 points

Checking to see if we have any avid air rifle hunters on this forum? I own two FX rifles, 25 cal Impact, 25 cal wildcat and a 22 cal Benjamin Marauder.1 point

As an exdealer I can tell you this happens far more often than you might think. I probably had 5% denied. Of those probably 80% were cleared up within a week. Don't worry too much about it. There is a good chance it will clear itself up within a week.1 point

There are actually a couple series of guns that are called "Sistema's." The most notable are the DGFM-FMAP 1911's that were made in Argentina for the various branches of the military. There were a little over 1.5 Million of these guns produced between 1945 and when production stopped in 1966. Obviously, the earlier guns made in the 1945 to 1950 years will be more war worn and harder to find in good condition than those produced after 1950. Then there are the Argentinian Colt contract Sistema's that were fully made here in the USA in Hartford, CT and sent to Argentina in small lots between the years of 1927 and 1933. Colt made and shipped only 10,000 of those guns for the contract. Those were manufactured between 1927 and 1928 exclusively, after which Colt engineer supervised the set up of Argentinian manufacturing, licensed the design, and trained Argentinian nationals to make them for themselves. No one knows how many of these original 10,000 guns have survived to today. Finding them in shootable condition, with all matching serial numbers, is a daunting task. Here are a few photos of mine, a true 1927 manufacture, serial numbers matching, Hartford MFG Argentinian Contract Colt - #4,921 of 10,0001 point

I hear and see a lot of good things about the impact. Just could not justify the cost. I almost went with a Wildcat, but I picked up a FX Streamline because I am not real crazy about bullpups and streamline has adjustable power. Very happy so far with my purchase.1 point

Aluminum absolutely will crack. The crack might be a little more obvious than a composite bow before it goes bang, but they will crack.1 point

John, EVERY stage was awesome! You outdone yourself with he match. When are you thinking of USPSA Level 2?1 point

I have never owned a cross bow, but I have owned recurves and compounds. I don’t hunt but the let off of a compound is going to let you “hold” for that perfect shot longer. That recurve is going to make you want to let it go. You might want to try all three types before making a purchase. Maybe someone close to you can help you out. It’s been a few years since I was involved so I don’t know what the pricing is. There are some good archery forums and there is also a good one here in Tennessee. My last bow was made by High Country Archery made in your city; might want to check them out...since you are close. Good luck with your new interest.1 point

There is one other thing to consider and that is cocking the crossbow. 180lb crossbow is no problem for a young strong man to cock. For me, not so easy. So I went with a Ten Point crossbow that had a crank cocking assist. Makes cocking the crossbow very easy. The only problem is they are not cheap add ons or the bows with them built in are fairly expensive.1 point

Kahrman is right on!! you want to bolt to pass through while doing as much damage as it can. My friend I spoke ofuse to send a supply of Bolts with his bows and also one new string replacement. He has one broadhead he recomends very highly to use with his bows. I just hope he is still making bows. Been about 5 years like I said since i spoke with him.1 point
-
150lb but 180 is probably better. The distance the strings travels on a crossbow is generally about half the distance of a compound. So 150lb - 180lb crossbow equates to a 60lb - 75lb compound bow. Just like with anything you can spend as much as you want. Most hunting crossbows are going to start more than $200. The cheapest hunting crossbow I saw at bass pro was $279. Most starter packages were in the 399-499 range. You have plenty of time before next season so I am sure you can find a good deal if you search around.1 point

I've been eying them up as well. I have two friends with recurve crossbows and after trying to get my never used by me compound bow restrung, the $ involved for a custom made string isn't worth it, might as well buy a new bow. It has me looking at a recurve as well. From what I understand, some crossbows are too powerful for close shots, the bolt can just pass through. A recurve will have enough power without the overkill. Used archery equipment can be a risk for sure, I think you'll be able to find something new in your budget if you are patient and don't need the latest and greatest. I'll let you know if I find something that fits your and my bill.1 point

I use to know a guy that made Crossbows and was very good at it and made some great bows. I will check and see if he is still making them. He was actually well know back years ago for introducing crossbows with Aluminum Bows that you never had to worry about cracking. They would sent an arrow down range really fast and were a lot quieter than the wooden version. Have not spoke with him in about 5 years but I do know where he lives so might just pay him a visit.1 point

I don't know a lot about crossbows specifically. In general, I'd be wary of a used bow of any sort, especially purchased from a random person on Craigslist.1 point

I appreciate the kind words but if my profile shows military & LEO service, it was put there by mistake or by someone else. I wanted to serve but was classified 4F cause of one functioning kidney. My younger brother's a LEO in the Knox County Sheriff Department (Captain) but I couldn't medically qualify. I'm grateful I've made it this long & bad habits were ended too late to do any good...but I plan on sliding into the grave saying it was one helluva ride! If I am not mistaken this was a 'big' story like four years ago, to the point of one distributor actually marketing their lowers as "Ghost Guns" in response to the fracas. It sounds like someone rehashing the same news because it didn't get the desired response the first time. Or the second.1 point

I gave always admired those pistols; but have never, in person, seen an example in nice condition. The most polite way to put it is that they were "well worn" (little or no metal finish, grips worn almost smooth, etc.). So seeing some in good condition would be a treat.1 point

I have that stored on every one of my computers and I won't lie, when I listen to it and watch it I have to fight back tears. I have always thought of my self as a rough and rugged tough man but that one shows me I am not all that tough any longer......................1 point

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Husqvarna_Vapenfabriks_Aktiebolag They made some really nice commercial 96 and 98 Mauser rifles in addition to shotguns and limited handguns. They also made a contract variant of the German G-3. I've viewed and handled some Husqvarna bolt action rifles and they were beautiful.1 point

@gregintenn, that is some might fine leather you make there sir. Well done. As for me, this is the only 1911 I own (same gun, not my picture though),1 point

Excellent trigger, retains all safeties, shortens pull and reset. Add - connector for slightly lighter pull. Together it's a much smoother pull with a positive reset. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

If anyone in the Knoxville area wants to see a display of 1911's that's sure to make you drop to your knees and shout "Praise be!" go over to SIA (Security Investment Appraisals) on Middlebrook Pike. One of the owners has dedicated an entire room of that very nice shop to his personal collection of milsurp goodies including probably 40 or so old 1911's. I didn't count them all but it is a lot! All in excellent condition. It's really a beautiful sight.1 point

You'd probably need to offer some more detail to get someone's interest. Is this a new design? Is it fabricating something for an older rifle that you can't find elsewhere? We've got people who love cool projects - but stuff like this is often a lot more work than it may seem.1 point
