  1. This will be a good excuse to get my Ruger American Rimfire sighted in..... that'll be a tiny circle at 100 yards

  2. Off the bat, I'm NOT posting this as a "gun reviewer/blogger". If you spend the time to read this, that will become obvious. I just had a hard time finding any info on the Sig 290rs when I was considering this purchase. My intent here is to share some basic thoughts and information in case someone else might be considering this as a carry gun. Last month, I started looking for a single stack 9mm. I started out with the normal players in this field; Shield, XDS, LC9, Glock and CM9. All good, solid guns but I wasn't totally satisfied. I really wanted something smaller. I wanted to be able to pocket the gun as a absolute last resort but I still wanted something I could shoot 200 rounds at a time without any discomfort. This lead me to the Sig 290rs. I was able to find one of these "used" locally and decided to give it a try. This "used" gun had been fired appropriately ten times. So, i treated it as a new gun and cleaned it up good before my first trip out. On the initial range trip, I had a few issues. The gun was VERY tight as was the magazine. Nearing the end of my range session, I realized I wasn't properly seating the top round in the magazine. You almost have to make a concentrated effort to push the round all the way back. Hard to describe but the failures seemed to stop. I would chalk this to user error, new mag springs and a 10 degree outdoor temperature. So, 100 rounds in, 4-5 failures. Not sold at this point. Trip two; 55 degrees. 250 rounds and no failures what so ever. The gun ran much smother. I finally figured out the trigger and started getting pretty decent groups. The best trigger comparison I can make would be that of a Smith 642. Long but predictable. This is the only real negative I have on the gun now. It's a steep learning curve but worth it. Factory SIG night sights are a real selling point in this segment. One thing to note, this gun is heavy! I feel like it weighs almost the same as my FNS9c which is my primary carry. Although this maybe a negative for some, I like the extra heft. It allows for a really soft shooting 9mm. Capacity is 6+1 which I think is adequate for the scope of use. The gun ships with a extended magazine which I am yet to takeout of the box; It defeats my purpose for the gun. The factory grips are very aggressive or my hands are overly sensitive. Talon grips solved this problem. I would recommend spending $15 on the grips to save you skin and shirts. I've posted some pictures below. Comparison is with a FNS9c. The FNS9c fits right in between a Glock 19 and a Glock 26. Barrel length of the G19 with a handle slightly larger than a G26. I think the size of this gun was a good match for me The gun shoots much better than I do so I omitted the target pictures. After a disappointing first run, it appears the SIG has redeemed itself and I've found my new summer/deep concealment carry gun.

  3. That Marlin is a real Gem. Anything that's tapered (unlike todays Henry's) octagon with crescent steel butt & a breach loader instantly rises to the top of the drool list! Weird how that is..... I used to work for George Numrich at Auto Ordnance which was across the parking lot from what is Thegunpartscorp of today. you should have seen what was called the "break down room". 8 foot high racks filled with handguns of all sorts in every kind of disrepair and stacks upon stacks of rifles every where. The only time George would put someone to work salvaging parts in there for the parts bins is when the orders slowed down. They all ways had parts pickers walking off with antique & current goodies out of there in their lunch bags. I see you like 99's, I was at a Gander mountain yesterday and they had a basic 99E in 300 Sav their for sale. Nice shape but nothing special with colored hard wood & press checkering. Burned my hands on the price tag of $1049 !!! What the hell are they thinking? Years ago I restored a 1899 303 TD for a friend of mine. It was spray painted to stop some bad pitting going on and the stock was cracked nearly in 2. A real basket case. I put new wood on it with a crescent butt & complete reblue. Heres how it came out.... Jimmy was in shock when I handed it back to him. He likes shinny stuff.....

  4. I like my tuned milspec trigger over any aftermarket trigger. It has taken me a long time but I can turn any milspec trigger into a three pound, or lighter, trigger. But not only that, I remove almost all of the pretravel and over travel. It feels like the trigger of a good bolt action.

  5. I've been wanting to build a AR pistol for a long time, and that day finally came I purchased a 80% lower and had a friend set the machine up, no drill jig was used , and it only cost me 1 drink to push the button on the machine. IMG_20170113_191000524_HDR_zps3dmi1kyy by Johnny Rotten, on Flickr Then I purchased a PSA pistol upper and LPK, I made a kind-of custom buffer tube foam cover, so here's my truck gun... 2017-07-13_05-25-09 by Johnny Rotten, on Flickr Shot 30 rounds this afternoon in the backyard and really liked it, my son's first comment was it's as loud as our Barrett 50. I need to get BUIS, angle grip and install my red dot..

  6. I've been going through some old guns I recently acquired, and got to this ancient 1894 Marlin. After some tinkering, cleaning, etc., I decided I wanted to shoot it. Well, the ammunition wouldn't begin to chamber. A quick glance showed that dreaded ring of brass at the back of the chamber.....A case with the head ripped off. I'd like to claim this idea, as it worked great, but it was actually a suggestion from my father. I removed the bolt, and ran a tap of the proper size into the case, just deep enough to get a good bite, and drove it out with a wooden dowel. A tap and die set can be had pretty inexpensively from somewhere like Harbor Freight if you don't happen to have one already. The tap cuts threads into the brass rather than pushing the brass harder and harder into the chamber walls like an easy out or screw would do. I hope this idea might be of some help to someone here if you ever encounter a stuck case.

  7. That old Savage looks great! I'd love a tour of the Numirich Arms place. I'll bet it huge! Here's an old 1899 my father restocked and gave me once. You're right...I really like the old Savages.

  8. We had a pulse electric fence growing up, and a family friend was over one day. She asked about the fence and how it was able to keeps the cows in, and was told it was electric, etc. Said friend did not trust what she was told, and walked over and started tapping the fence. She timed it just right and was hitting in between the pulses, missing the shock. She then proclaimed the fence was not working and quit tapping it, and instead grabbed a hold. Much laughter ensued from us watching.

  10. I found this on Rimfire Central several weeks ago, and it has been driving me nuts. I thought I would post here to see if I could get some other people interested. Misery loves company, right? Rules: .22 LR only 100 yards Must get 8 out of 10 straight shots in the bullseye (no sighters once you start) Breaking the outer black ring is in Must use official target linked below No fluorescent stickers to enhance the bullseye Bench rest ok - anything but a vise Click here to download target. Print as actual size. The bullseye should print just under 1 5/8". My best is 7/10 so far. I have done that over and over, so I'm about to lose it since I can't get that 8th round in there. But I've really been having fun with it. Ammo inconsistency and wind has been killing me. When you complete the challenge post a pic of your target along with details on your rifle, scope, and ammo used. If several people get interested in this I may offer up some sort of prize or drawing like they did over at RFC. Good luck!

  12. I bought a 290 at auction (note: not the RS model). Light strikes had me sending it back to Sig. You can read up on why they came out with the RS version that addresses the problem. Long story short, Sig has outstanding customer service. They upgraded the entire trigger mechanism to the RS and replaced a dead night sight. Problem solved and it's really a decent little shooter at least out to 10 or 12 yards at least (never shot further out than 12 yards). It fit my pockets pretty well. It always went bang when I pulled the trigger after the fix. I thought enough of it to trade it to my dad who really did not like the S&W Bodyguard 380 that he had been carrying. I wouldn't want my 75 year old dad to not have a reliable weapon to carry.

  14. I think I am the one who is computer illiterate! Haha! The attachment issue must be a problem with the TGO site. I put another link below the rules from a file hosting site, but I'm not sure if that's working either. This challenge has beaten the life out of me, so it's only right that I would have trouble linking the target! If anyone has a foolproof way of hosting a PDF I will email you a copy and then put a good link in the original post.

  16. It shoots fine, but it now appears the extractor is awol..........more parts from gunpartscorp! Such is my luck with a pig in a poke. I really enjoy fooling with historic pieces such as this however. This ont is chambered in 38-40, and has a 24" octagon barrel and a cresent buttplate. Had the previous owners taken care of it properly, I likely would have never had the opportunity to hold this rifle.

  17. I think standard velocity is the way to go. It should be more consistent since it doesn't come back through the sound barrier. Wish I had some CCI SV to try. I'm ready to move on with my life! Haha!

  18. My CZ seems to really like the CCI standard velocity. 40gr. @ 1070 FPS. That is at 50 yards though. I'm going to try to get out a couple of times this week in between showers maybe and see how it does at 100 yds.

  19. Certainly a great way to make that fix. Just a word of caution, all ways measure the leading OD of the cartridge against the tap OD to be used making absolutely no question that you wont cut all the way threw the brass & into the chamber wall. That could make for one very bad day if only the back side of brass comes out and leaves tap cuts in the chamber wall. Easy does it is the key here!

  20. No time limit! I just posted it up for fun right now. I wasted some more ammo on it today. I'm taking a break until I get my hands on some better stuff. Mini-mags aren't getting it done.

  21. So I am adding a kit to my gear for dealing with mud on my optics. I'm thinking a lens cloth, a semi soft brush, some cleaning solution, and a plastic pick all in a ziplock bag should cover it, but figured I would ask here. I don't encounter mud all that often, but when I do I really hate only being able to wipe it off in varying degrees of success until I get home to really clean it good. Does anyone here have a better solution to this minor, but aggravating problem?

  23. I bought my first 22 mag pistol around 1988 I believe. My dad was going to flea sales and tobacco barn sales(if you are country, you know what the latter is) and found a few pistols and rifles occasionally. I expressed an interest in this S&W he'd found. It was a K48-Masterpiece, 22mag with matching numbered box and papers. Even still had the Smith wax paper around the pistol. Dad tried to give it to me, but I knew he was a little tight on money back then. He'd been going thru cancer as well.(Seems to run in the family.) The only way I could get it was to tell him my father-in-law wanted it. Really hated lying to him about it, but he did need a little extra money, so I set up a price with Dad and waited a few days then paid him for it. Believe it or not, there is a point to this long tale. lol I like the cartridge so much, that I'd buy a few boxes when I'd see it. Probably had a dozen or so when I quite shooting the pistol and stopped buying them. But then...rumors of the PMR 30 started flying. So who wouldn't want a 30 round capable, 22 magnum semi-auto pistol? I started buying again. I have a few boxes lying around now. Probably enough to keep me in shooting ammo for a while. But I still look for a good price on it and might buy a few more.

  24. Raised on a farm, seen a bull walk right through one. A friend fell off a motorbike into one, got wrapped up bad. Could not get out for being hit so much. I laughed my butt off all the way back to the house to kill the box. Yea they do hit hard, makes you yelp a bit.

  26. I called the Colt custom shop the other day to answer a few questions I had about grips, etc. I had also seen a couple of reviews online that Colt recently started making the 3rd gens more like the 2nd gens with removable cylinder bushing, etc. Some people are even unofficially refering to them as gen4. The Colt rep indeed confirmed the recent changes. This just adds to my enthusiasm to get a new one. Have you compared a recent gen3 that has gone back to the "old" design?

  29. I'm all good with anyone that wants to upgrade a trigger kit in an AR or any other gun. I wouldn't mind dropping a Geissele SSA in my ARs. My point was more to address the fact that a lot of YouTubers and the like have brainwashed people into thinking mil-spec is some kind of flawed trigger - they're not. They serve their purpose just fine and get the job done. In defensive scenarios, you're not going to be performing crisp trigger resets; you're going to be pissing your pants and mashing the sh*t out of the trigger. For recreational shooting if you got the dough and like the product, by all means, put whatever you like in your guns. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  30. I've never had a flu shot. Now, flame me all you want but, if I'm around people that are sick, I'll take echinacea. I've been told "that stuff doesn't work, it's all in your head." Well if my mind is that powerful then so be it. All I know is I'm not at the doctor getting Tamiflu and whatever else. (knocking on laminate wood and particle board )

  31. Millions of soldiers all over the world have gone to war with "mil-spec" triggers for a couple of centuries and did just fine. Unless you're target shooting with a military rifle, what does it matter? I rarely screw with triggers... just learn how they break.

  36. That's their way to introduce doubt that it is your system and not their service when you don't get the advertised speeds. They tried to blame all three of my computers too, because the tech doesn't know any different. However, all of my computers have the fastest SSDs you can put in them, quad core i7's (one is a quad core mobile cpu) with 16gb of ddr3 ram, even had OSX, windows 10 and windows 7. The specs of the computers have less to do with bandwidth than they want people to believe. The tech here was so ignorant about computers, he argued that my Mac Mini was an Apple Airport router and not a computer.

  41. Don't worry. It's California so someone from some agency or another will be along shortly to shut him down for not having a business license, lack of employer-sponsored healthcare, OSHA violations, or operating an industrial business in a residential zone. If not, maybe a busy body from the Home Owners Association will do it for them.

  43. i actually don't hate how it looks. I'm confused, though, on why it needs such a huge "nose," as they call it. Hudson says that the nose is the key to the gun having an "extremely low bore axis." Frankly, I'm not seeing anything special about the bore axis. Putting a light on this thing would be ridiculous, though. I'd be hesitant to put money in a pistol that may be from a fly-by-night company. If it had great reviews and available mags (hopefully they used something like M9 mags), though, I'd at least consider one for around a grand.

  44. I don't store guns in leather holsters, mostly because they won't fit in my safe in the holsters. I also tend to get sweaty and need to wipe the pistols down whenever I put them away. I store them in nylon pocket holsters to help prevent idiot marks in/out of the safe.
