Open Carry/2nd Amendment is just the low hanging fruit. I wonder how many other laws and rights they'd like to see curbed. I'm sure we'll see some out of sight, out of mind "free-speech zones" to take care of the 1st Amendment and it's pesky guarantees of free speech and peaceable assembly to petition. They probably wish the 4th Amendment wasn't around either so they could stop, frisk, and check the bags of anyone in and around downtown Cleveland. Of course, it would only be temporary and never extended to full time under the guise of some continuing emergency. Not without some Orwellian sounding name like PATRIOT Act...oh, wait.8 points

Fill us in on exactly what you know about the 6 Officers in Baton Rouge or the 12 Officers in Dallas that justified them being shot. I truly don’t understand why you or a few others on here hate cops so much. But as a patriot that truly cares about my country, believes it is great and wants to keep it that way; I support our Police Officers as most Americans do. I think it is imperative we understand this isn’t about race; it’s about crime and violence. A line has been drawn in the sand and blacks and whites alike are getting on one side or the other; most of them on the same side.6 points

Postage has been printed, the USPS has been paid, and I am scheduling a pick-up of the boxes as soon as their site lets me do so. This was an interesting experience, for sure. I hope everyone likes their tumblers when they arrive!5 points

All... I been shootin handguns all my life, and im a pretty old geezer... There ain't many i ain't shot or handled... I've carried everything from 1911's; revolvers (...smiths: small, medium, and large... ruger: blackhawks to vaquero sheriffs...); glocks:....(. little bitty, baby to big..); Sigs:.(... little bitty to bitty...)... Ya get the picture... Since ive gotten older and more crippled up, i tote a smith j frame airweight, a 938 sig, or a itty bitty glock in my pocket, and a great big pistol in the car.... Don't be fooled by the marketing hype; there aint no new "magic calibers" nor "mo better" pistols... The good news is that most all handguns work well... Better now than they did in the "good ole days"; mostly due to the advances in CNC machining and bullet design; especially for the semiautos.. I like 'em all, even the damnable "tupperware" pistolas... Bottom line... Pick the one you like and take the time to shoot it alot... Nothin teaches you ta shoot like shootin... aged leroy the gimp... 69 yrs old and still here...5 points

I believe this to be a crucial first step towards alleviating the tensions between police and their communities. Violent force needs to return to being the very last resort. Whether it actually is or not, the perception exists that it is the go to option for police when dealing with the public. As long as that is the case, progress will be very hard to make. I think another crucial thing we need to do is reevaluate the job we expect police to do. There are so many so called crimes against which exist laws that police are expected to enforce (and that's what policing is, the exercise of force by the government) that should not even be crimes in the first place that it puts police officers in an impossible position. I'm of the opinion that if police are going to exist at all, their focus needs to be on crimes involving an actual victim. If we can't point to an actual victim whose life, liberty or property have been violated then it isn't a job for police. "Broken windows" policing may have given the appearance of an orderly society but it has also separated officers from the populace they serve and in some communities turned them into something more akin to a foreign occupying force than agents of peace. That has to change.4 points

I see no hate here, and no one is condoning murder. Sooner or later, however, if police treat people wrongly enough, people will get tired of it and do something about it. That's what you see happening now. Is the media helping to gin this up? YES Is your president helping to gin this up? YES Do police have some responsibility in ginning this up? ABSOLUTELY Is it going to get worse? I'd think so How do we fix it? I don't have a clue4 points

I'm not blinded by anything Dave, but I'm not the one playing ostrich either. I love how you completely ignore the entire rest of that post and every other one I have made where I lay out the issues that are actually in play here. The cognitive dissonance is strong with you as you refuse to even acknowledge anything that even remotely contradicts your "cops are innocent good guys" world view. Like it or not, there is a fundamental and serious disconnect between police agencies and the communities they purportedly serve. That's a fact. There are many different ideas on how to address that disconnect. Some I favor over others but if you can't see the problem exists, then you can't be part of finding the solution. ETA: let me unpack one of my statements a little. While the individual officers who lost their lives in these shootings are likely innocent of wrongdoing , this isn't a conversation about individuals. The subject is the broken state of policing as a whole in this country. If that subject isn't adequately addressed then we can expect more incidents like Dallas and Baton Rouge. That doesn't justify them in the least, but that doesn't mean that they won't be entirely predictable.4 points

I find it disturbing that bring up the fact that police officers were killed today generated essentially hateful comments that its the police communities fault. Then all the government overreach crap comes out again. Some of you are so filled with twisted hatred for police that you disappoint me as members of this community. Most of you promoting this hate base your knowledge on media garbage and having had a negative contact with a police officer. I did a full police career and encountered a lot of cop haters. Some of them just hated cops, some of them were stark raving mad...and hated cops. Some of you guys need to find something or someone else to hate on.4 points

Prayers for the families of the Police Officers that lost their lives in Baton Rouge this morning and also to the families of the wounded. I don't think this is going to end soon or well. I will stand on the side of the police every time and I have had my share of discussions over my 68 years with them. Yea, there was a few that I felt could have been more professional. I also realize they are not delivering PIzza's or working at Mickey D's. They are putting their lives on the line every time a 911 call comes in or every time they see a crime being committed. If it ever came down to whose back I would have you can bet it will be the Police Officers every time.........jmho4 points

I don't know, myself, I know what side of this fight I'm on. Are there bad cops out there, sure, just like bad soldiers, bad firefighters etc., but as a whole they do a necessary job that others don't want to do. I support them when it's necessary and call for disciplinary action or prosecution when deemed appropriate. The indiscriminate shooting of law enforcement is just low, and nothing anyone can say will make me think otherwise. Those shooters should be put down in the street like the rabid dogs that they are.4 points

"They" in this case is the police union. So, it's not the usual crowd trying to tell us that open carry is a public danger. I don't say that to advocate an anti-police position, but I do think that they are susceptible to the "government knows best" mindset. Especially as the local PD are the ones in charge of the outer zones, most likely to see incidents, people will be looking to them if anything bad happens. But still, screw them for thinking there should be an exception to state law. As to it getting done, or not...I'm honestly not sure. One open carry asshat making a scene that gets recorded could change things easily enough. I'm glad Gov. Kasich is holding the line thus far. Laws aren't suggestions or only applicable in the good times. We'll see if it holds through for the entire convention.4 points
-
They shouldn't have to ban open carry near the conventions gun owners with "common sense" should understand that it's a tinderbox and not inflame the situation. As responsible gun owners we ought to act responsibly. What we do, how we do it, what we say, etc. Reflects on us all. I think that this is a time where our behaviour as a class of people can make a difference. There has been more than a bit of talk about being insensitive to one group or another. What we need to be is more sensitive about our own group... That doesn't mean we should hide, or even hold our tongues. We should speak out but in a way that puts us all in a positive light. I had a conversation with someone recently that mentioned how horrible it was that gun in the hands of civilians caused so much grief & pain. I politely stood my ground as a truly responsible gun owner and informed them that neither me, or anyone I knew that owned guns was committing crimes against anyone! The truly responsible gun owners are invisible because they don't attract the attention of the law or the public. The focus should be criminal BEHAVIOR with guns. What are we as a group doing to improve our image in these trying times? RANT OFF I do hope that cooler heads prevail in the days to come. Our prayers go out to all those hurt by these events in any way.4 points

Like I said before, it's a lot quicker to explain what it is that you actually understand. I will grant that you are right about one thing, it is pretty pointless for you and I to engage on this issue. Though not for the reasons you think. You appear to be more interested in protecting your presuppositional worldview than in the actual problems or the actual solutions to those problems. Here is the hard truth. You say that "the American will support their police officers" yet you completely ignore the reality that a significant portion of the population doesn't view the police as their own. If you can't see the reality of that, then you can't change the reality of that. If we really want to stop this from spiraling out of control then we need to change that state of affairs. Your simplistic views and solutions will only result in more dead citizens and more dead officers.3 points

Let's place the blame sqaurly where it belongs and keep our eye on the ball. This goes all the way to the top. The great divider has driven a wedge in the country from the beginning of his Fundamental Transformation. This is but one more piece. I'm not saying he nor anyone else in the government has a hand in the killings, but the atmosphere of hate, unrest, tension and racial divide spews from this administration. The atmosphere for this to happen is part of his legacy. Remember the cop that "acted stupidly"? He showed the world on TV how to disrespect LEOs. He's showed us how terror groups can target our military and LEOS in our cities, claim credit for it and not suffer any consequenses. He has validated the BLM movement with his comments. The list goes on. Yep, I blame the guy who likes to use a good crisis to his advantage for the atmosphere for this sort of thing to even exist. I support our law enforcement. I'm not sure what the answer is other than a change in atmosphere.3 points

I don't think we're at a downward spiral yet...though it can come out of nowhere fast enough when we get into these things. I do think that it's telling that on a sight as tilted to the right as TGO is, that there is a still vocal minority of opinion that as a profession, law enforcement needs to take a hard look at how they carry out their duties and think about if they are exacerbating the problem. Encrypted comms would be a huge cost, one that I think could be better allocated. I do admit to liking the idea of open frequencies so someone other than the police have the ability to record the traffic for future use. Better radio range and reception for the officers and other first responders is another legit need. Force on force and de-escalation training is definitely needed. But Dave specifically said " tools to kill the people that are attacking them," and I'm at a loss as to what that means when you look at existing force rules (which I think are a bit too loose to begin with), and their issued equipment.3 points

I'm kinda surprised at some of the responses in this thread. These officers were targeted, simply because they were officers. Like Omega said above, are there bad cops? Certainly. Just like there's bad nurses, lawyers, soldiers, whatever. But for some of you to basically imply that this crap is justified because of some encounter you had with a policeman with little man syndrome, or because of the questionable actions of a few officers blasted all over the media is beyond absurd. Damn shame Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk3 points

You know full well I was talking about the police community in general, and do not know a single thing about the individuals shot. Because a man wears a badge doesn't mean he should be a bully. This is something I see far too often. Others see it as well. I'm sorry you don't like it, but that's the way it is no matter how much you try to defend it. My kid was stopped a while back for not wearing a seatbelt. That's a bullchit law, but it IS a law, and he broke it. No one was upset about the ticket, but the troopers smart mouth and bully attitude left an impression with my son he'll not forget. There's no reason for all that. Of course, he'll not resort to violence over the issue, but the trooper could have refrained from being an ass and made a positive impression on a young man, yet he chose not to.3 points

We usually blanch, peel, and freeze maters in the summertime and can our various sauces in the winter when adding heat and steam to the house is a good thing. Today we canned jalapeno jelly, blueberry jam and peach pie filling. Love it when stuff starts to ripen. Also dehydrated somewhere around 16 pints of cherry tomatoes. My wife is a friend for them on salads and she has at least one salad every day. Pepper jelly, pie fillings and stuff like that make good Christmas gifts. With all of us "kids" now in our 40's & 50's a gift like that is easier than trying to figure out what to get for people who already have too much junk. I have lots of fond memories of helping my grandmother can. My grandfather on my mom's side was a crotchety old dude and we only got invited up when it was time to pick beans or go glean the corn fields. Then he couldn't get enough of his grandkids. Still good memories though...3 points

In the simplest of terms. I don't care what your career or color is. If your a violent a$$ then you should get what you have coming to you. This is all about hate and haters. If we want to live in a civilized society the society as a whole needs to reject the haters and what they represent.2 points

Those are a good start but a good communications system that can't be motored by everyone in scanner land is another along with good portable and car radios. A lot of agencies don't have the money to do this. The next would be more time and money invested in force on force and de-escalation training. Conflict resolution when things are tense isn't something that comes naturally. There's been some really good training with respect to Active Shooter's but there needs to be some tactical changes made in it. The only other practical tools I'd put in patrol officers hands would be more ballistic shields. A lot of soft armor types are available that would be great.2 points

I'm curious what encounters you have experienced in your life that has made you feel this way. From the age of 16 until 20 I was pulled over 13 times. I would say only one stop was somewhat questionable but even then the cop was fair. In fact, only once did I encounter a cop that was a prick. I think the vast majority of cops are good people that are doing a very difficult job. As someone else said, we need to appreciate the good ones and hold the bad ones accountable. Blaming all "rank and file officers on the street" doesn't seem like the solution to me.2 points

With the terrorism and civil unrest, anyone with a little foresight can see where this is heading. Best case scenario is things will get worse before they get better. During such times what does a tyrannical government do? Our police are our first line of defense and provide an extremely valuable service. They put themselves in harms way on our behalf. God bless our police officers and their families. I'm not looking forward to the break down of society and escalating foreign and domestic terrorism.2 points

Police officers as a whole, do not respect the populace. Me personally, I will give a police officer the same respect I give any other man. Until he gives me a reason not to. He gets no preferential treatment from me because of a badge.2 points

Before the garden started to produce I had intended on purchasing a real nice food processor, a food vacuum sealer and a dehydrator myself. But the way the political climate is and the things that are occurring, I reallocated those funds for a back up AR-15 and some ammunition. Oh well, next year. I did 14 quarts of green beans this morning. Sure is nice to be able to do 14 quarts at a time compared to seven with my old caner. Sure like that American pressure caner I bought. A tad expensive but it will out last me and then my kids.1 point
