Makes for a nice, compact package. I think this will fit in the bike saddlebag now.4 points

Bigger bear visited the side of the house last night about 9pm. Had the coon trap set again for a second coon, I don't know if 2 apple cores and a half a banana attracted him or not but he knocked it over. I decided to give up racoon trapping for now.3 points

Went to Ollies this morning to burn up an expiring coupon. While there, I pursued the book section and found a stack of "Blue Book of Gun Values" by Fjestad. They are the 36th edition dated 2015. They are priced at $12.99. I picked one up for model reference more than gun value. I also wanted it so that I can look smart, and snap off prices to Steelharp when he finds treasures!2 points

For the novice out there who may not know; You should understand the difference between 'leading' and 'antimony wash'. Antimony wash is a silvery grey color left in the barrel. It does NOT affect accuracy and does NOT affect safety. It's merely a color left behind. Leading looks like a smeared build up and the difference should be immediately apparent. Leading, when looking down the bore, just looks like it don't belong in there. Antimony wash isn't necessarily visible from certain light angles. SO, just cause you see a little silver color left behind, don't git yer panties in a wad. Learn to tell the difference.2 points

Joining the NRA and reaching out to your elected officials are not mutually exclusive actions. I spend time doing both, when I can. I also utilized the NRA's populated form letters after Sandy Hook. Which they could not have developed without the resources to do so. The NRA, like any organization, is not perfect and has it's warts. The good they are doing right now far outweighs the things I dislike. Or I believe they are at least doing $35 worth of work on my behalf every year. I completely understand the NRA's decision to cherry pick their involvement. For one, they do have limited resources, and secondly they can't take on cases that are losers due to the narrative that would be spun by anti's should they lose in court. In a perfect world they would be able to pick up every case like the one you mentioned, but that isn't where we are right now. I'll stand by my original statement, if you own a gun the NRA is worth every penny of $35/yr and while I understand people have a variety of reasons for not joining, none of them resonate with me. I love the work that organizations like the Second Amendment Foundation do, but how long do you really think they would stand up to the Washington machine without the NRA taking the majority of fire?2 points

We go through similar conversations any time a new range opens up... "They won't let me shoot reloads there? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They require me to buy and shoot their ammo? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They require a safety class before letting me shoot on their range? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They won't let me do rapid-fire shooting on their range? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They won't let me shoot my .454 Casull on their range? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They won't let me shoot my NFA items on their range? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They won't let me shoot human-shaped targets on their range? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They charge HOW much? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They won't let me shoot from a draw? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They won't let me take head-shots on the targets? I'll never darken their doorstep!" Guess what, folks. There are plenty of people who will do whatever the requirements are to shoot on a state of the art facility. Clearly the people signing the big fat check to build the range get to dictate whatever terms they want. It's a free country. The NRA isn't perfect but no organization is. Church, fraternity, civic organization, take your pick. All have detractors. Only the NRA has a pimp-ass state of the art shooting facility about to be built in Murfreesboro. Besides, for each of you who say you won't shoot there, that's one more person I don't have to wait in line behind when I want to go shoot.2 points

Interesting. I work my truck hard and that would be a problem for me. Realistically many 1/2 ton trucks are used more like cars now and many won't see these problems but they will get the advantage of the light weight. It all depends on your use...1 point

What I got out of it: learned alternative ways to defend myself against an unarmed assailant who may not need to be shot. Got a free magic spear and helmet Learned basic building blocks for how manage an up close and personal armed assailant and aggressively make space. Mr. Miyagi was right, wax on wax off... simple blocking moves work at slow speed. With practice, no reason to believe it won't work in real speed. Made a new friend, Erik88, and knew everyone else from previous training events. Rained, kept it cool, add an extra training dynamic focusing on more positive footing and foot placement, at no extra charge. Reminder to practice mag changes, especially in my MK9 Winning a knife- on- knife fight probably means you lived 3 more days.....knives, when used as a weapon, are scary.1 point

Never used Hornady dies but have been very happy using Lee dies for many different calibers in Lee presses.1 point

I get that same bump when flaring-I think it happens more with newer brass that is thicker at the mouth.I also use Lee 4 die set with the factory crimp. All my dies are Lee and have had zero problems.Like Westwindmike says-possibly polishing the case mouth flare it might help1 point

Sounds like an expensive fix to a very slight problem. I'd polish the expander with some metal polish to slick it up and be done. I've also heard of using a bit of case lube on the expander, especially since you are not dropping powder through it. I hope you get it to work like you want it to.1 point

Interesting, great that they were able to rehab the bird. Though the idea of having a Great Horned Owl walk up your chest is pretty frightening, given that they can crush bones with their feet. This is what my wife does... https://www.facebook.com/pages/Upstate-Birds-of-Prey/2116841255422011 point

The design of the action on the Ballard seems pretty innovative for an 1860s design. The gun can be used for rim fire or center fire cartridges. The rim fire firing pin can be reversed. A hollowed out space in the hammer won't hit the protrusion when reversed. I haven't been able to find a pic or schematic for the complete center fire firing pin for this gun and I suspect a piece or two may be missing. The part I labeled as the firing pin is a hollow screw. I don't have the actual firing pin. I also think they did a good job with the hammer. The flat part fires the rim fire and the hollowed part fires center fire. Be great to hear your take on this.1 point

The wife was going to order one of these for me for Father's day.... she forgot. Went on the website and placed a 'reservation', if they get enough additional orders, they'll go back to press (familiar w/ this issue from my days in the print-biz - you need a minimum number of copies to make a print run economically feasible). Says they are 1 order away from going back to press. So if you didn't get an order in on-time, saddle up to the website, you still have a chance! (but you probably won't get them in-time for father's day) - K1 point

If the locals won't play ball, fly-n-buy, and enjoy the road trip home. I have zero patience with car dealers. With so many to choose from, there's no reason to cut them any slack. They're kinda like lawyers... 99% of them give the rest a bad name.1 point

Sounds like your press is not bolted securely to a heavy enough bench. I use the Lee dies and don't get the bump. Maybe you just need to polish the expander just a little.1 point

My only problem with the Omega trigger system is that WHEN you fall in love with the gun, there's nothing you can do to make it any better. The original SA/DA trigger smooths considerably around 500 dry-fires/rounds AND can be upgraded to competition quality by folks likee David at Cajun Gun Works. I took one apart myself once, will never do that again. Taking that sucker apart makes detail stripping a Ruger Mark II look as easy as field stripping a Glock in comparison.1 point

I believe the NRA and the smaller orgs like GOA and the SAF to be indespensible to each other. The NRA is huge and has the influence to get things done whilst the smaller orgs keep the NRA honest and focused.1 point

Also check out the Canik clones of the CZs. They come in at a more attractive price and seem to be about as good but the trigger is standard CZ. I have a C-100 which is a clone of the CZ 75B compact. Academy Sports seem to be the only ones in Clarksville to carry them.1 point

AAR: Dealing With Pests-Civilian Use of Force Continuum and Solutions. Date: Sunday June 5 2016 First off, Thank you Randy and GTG! We had an information packed class, actually very little rain, and I had the opportunity to meet Erik from TGO and see/train with my bud roar-k, a very dialed in and motivated gentleman. And of course having the chance to train with my friend GTG and 3 of the members of our local group was a plus! Outstanding class folks! Randy wasn’t kidding when he said “This is the class your CCW class should have been” ! John Steinbeck wrote “The final weapon is the brain, all else is supplemental” and Randy laid the foundation for the class on this concept, opening with Jeff Cooper’s “Color Code” and Randy’s excellent “Dealing with PESTS” lecture . A fight you've avoided is a fight you've won... The Devil is always in the details, and this class was very detailed and focused heavily on Concept and Context…something often lost in many training classes. This reflects Randy’s comprehensive subject knowledge and teaching ability. From a “Gun Centric” background many suffer from the Hammer & Nail illusion…we can’t always have a gun on us and not every situation is a shooting situation…actually, going for your gun at the wrong time can be the worst thing you can do within certain contexts…you must have physical control and space in order to initiate this option…if it’s even the correct option. I promise, Randy can enlighten you on this! We used a variety of training tools… NOK training knives, folding training knives, foam padded baseball bats, and a variety of striking pads. This was not full on contact, but rather the tools were utilized in a low percentage speed mode in order to develop foundational skill sets. Randy utilized his “Crawl-Walk-Run” methodology to tie these concepts together for us. Where I found this class particularly unique was Randy method of tying in these foundational unarmed concepts with live fire training towards the end of the class, especially his method of teaching shooting from “position two” of the four count drawstroke. I have been to quite a few classes and have never seen this technique utilized before. I am impressed and will definitely be practicing this in my future training sessions. I hope, and will encourage Randy to build on this class with a next level follow-on class. Actually I would gladly pay for and participate in this type training from Randy with no live firearm training in order to allow more reps in the foundational concepts…without hesitation. I think I’ll pester Randy for both! When this class is again offered I plan to attend and bring other members of our group with me! This information and these skills sets are needed…whether you are a “Gun Guy/Gal” or not…Don’t miss this one folks! Thank you again Randy. Thank you again as well GTG for hosting this class.1 point

Here are a couple of other ideas for you. Not sure if you paint as well, though I think these portraits would be just as good, possibly even better, in pencil, especially for a time frame when pics were black and white.1 point

Before Willis ruined my life, it was a Kershaw Blur tanto serrated. Now it's the TGO TR4. I carried the Magic twice, but it's just too cool to put to hard use and scuff up. I still carry the Blur if I feel it may be a day where I might really abuse a knife or maybe lose it, like a boating trip or something. I just really love the size and feel of the TR4, and the strength/rigidity of the blade is just astounding. It impresses me anew every time I use it. I have all the TGO blades, and the TR4 is my favorite all-around so far. I'm tempted to get one of the new Kershaw autos or a Benchmade of some sort just kinda' because, but I really can't believe I would like them any more than the knives Willis forced me to buy. ;-)1 point
