  1. We go through similar conversations any time a new range opens up... "They won't let me shoot reloads there? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They require me to buy and shoot their ammo? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They require a safety class before letting me shoot on their range? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They won't let me do rapid-fire shooting on their range? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They won't let me shoot my .454 Casull on their range? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They won't let me shoot my NFA items on their range? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They won't let me shoot human-shaped targets on their range? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They charge HOW much? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They won't let me shoot from a draw? I'll never darken their doorstep!" "They won't let me take head-shots on the targets? I'll never darken their doorstep!" Guess what, folks. There are plenty of people who will do whatever the requirements are to shoot on a state of the art facility. Clearly the people signing the big fat check to build the range get to dictate whatever terms they want. It's a free country. The NRA isn't perfect but no organization is. Church, fraternity, civic organization, take your pick. All have detractors. Only the NRA has a pimp-ass state of the art shooting facility about to be built in Murfreesboro. Besides, for each of you who say you won't shoot there, that's one more person I don't have to wait in line behind when I want to go shoot.

  2. I believe the NRA and the smaller orgs like GOA and the SAF to be indespensible to each other. The NRA is huge and has the influence to get things done whilst the smaller orgs keep the NRA honest and focused.

  3. Joining the NRA and reaching out to your elected officials are not mutually exclusive actions. I spend time doing both, when I can. I also utilized the NRA's populated form letters after Sandy Hook. Which they could not have developed without the resources to do so. The NRA, like any organization, is not perfect and has it's warts. The good they are doing right now far outweighs the things I dislike. Or I believe they are at least doing $35 worth of work on my behalf every year. I completely understand the NRA's decision to cherry pick their involvement. For one, they do have limited resources, and secondly they can't take on cases that are losers due to the narrative that would be spun by anti's should they lose in court. In a perfect world they would be able to pick up every case like the one you mentioned, but that isn't where we are right now. I'll stand by my original statement, if you own a gun the NRA is worth every penny of $35/yr and while I understand people have a variety of reasons for not joining, none of them resonate with me. I love the work that organizations like the Second Amendment Foundation do, but how long do you really think they would stand up to the Washington machine without the NRA taking the majority of fire?

  5. There is absolutely no telling where gun laws would be right now without the new and more intractable NRA that has evolved since the AWB. Indeed, if membership falls, that simply means less voter power to hold over the heads of pols nationwide that will support more and more restrictive gun rights. It's amazing what the NRA has been able to influence with only its 5 million or so members currently. Think if there were 25 million. I'm thinking that with the continuing wimpification of America, that 5 mil won't be nearly enough to sway the anti-gun sentiment translating to law (especially federal) ere long. - OS

  6. I bet they will. Ronnie has taken some pretty positioned stances before and I can see them doing this. He won't sell his 50cal to the State of California for example. He said if the people can't have them, he wouldn't sell them to the State either. While the NRA isn't perfect, they certainly do more than almost any other organization to help protect 2A.

  8. This is only one of the idiotic things gun owners do that cause me to be the lousy hypocrite I have become. I am a staunch supporter of everyone's rights.....but in my heart, I do not believe in it. It may get me flamed, but Constitution or not, not everyone should have a gun. Even if you ain't a criminal or crazy...some people just don't need to be in possession of one. BUT, here's the rub, who the hell is ANYONE to make that decision for me or you?

  9. LOL I get it man. You're as entitled to take that stance as they are to take theirs. That's all I'm saying. Well, that and TGO really does seem to go through a different version of this conversation every time a new range opens. The key lesson in this seems to be a reminder that a lot of Pro-2A folks are also very liberterian at heart (small L). They don't like folks telling them what to do or how to do it.

  11. Personally, I would rather shove live wasps up my arse. But, I have to deal with a TON of rude, ignorant, out-of-state Bonnaroonians every year, who think that it's perfectly acceptable to pull their RVs into my parking lot at 3 o'clock, Monday morning & then knock on my door so they can collect their dog from the kennel. Answering the door naked, angry & carrying a shotgun discourages this behavior.......

  13. I can't imagine any good reason not to be in the NRA right now. If nothing else isn't it worth $35 every year to see so many liberals piss themselves over the NRA? If you're a gun owner, and you aren't in the NRA you seriously need to ask yourself what you are doing to ensure our 2A rights for the future.

  14. Knock the NRA but who else does what they do? No other organization is as large or politically powerful.

  15. Went to Ollies this morning to burn up an expiring coupon. While there, I pursued the book section and found a stack of "Blue Book of Gun Values" by Fjestad. They are the 36th edition dated 2015. They are priced at $12.99. I picked one up for model reference more than gun value. I also wanted it so that I can look smart, and snap off prices to Steelharp when he finds treasures!

  19. Gallatin gun club is NRA only. Last time I heard the waiting list was about 3 years. Like it or not, the NRA is the 800 pound gorilla when it comes to the second amendment and I'm glad as to which side they are on.

  25. Thanks! I've got two Nissans right now and they've been great trucks - over 175K on both. Every time I get in them though, I find myself thinking I'm ready to be back in a Toyota again. As an American engineer, I find myself pulling for Ford. I just can't bring myself to buy a F-150, though. @KahrMan has one and it's like riding around in your living room. It's super nice, but I've got some legacy Ford ownership issues I'd have to work through.

  32. Also check out the Canik clones of the CZs. They come in at a more attractive price and seem to be about as good but the trigger is standard CZ. I have a C-100 which is a clone of the CZ 75B compact. Academy Sports seem to be the only ones in Clarksville to carry them.

  41. No crappie, just a few bluegill. We were only out for about 2 hours. It's hard to really fish when all the pleasure boaters are knocking you around and the 2 year old is trying to jump out the back of the boat I found some schools of crappie or whitebass on a flat right off the channel but could not convince any of them to bite. It was hard staying on them with the wind and waves. Good luck.
