Maybe you guys are seeing/reading something I'm not. I reread this thread and maybe I missed the "hero" statement...I don't know... I did make a statement that I had respect for the men that lost, or nearly lost, their lives. Not because they are cops or Feds, but because they choose to do their job and most of them continued to fight courageously, i.e. Mireles. Did they screw up? Was some of this a total CF? Yep...Big Time. Major. I respect anyone that does their job and doesn't infringe on my God Given Constitutionally Protected Rights. But we aren't discussing that here, with all due respect. I appreciate the lessons we can learn and implement from their screwups. I hold in high esteem men like Jeff Cooper...I've sat at his table and feel fortunate to have been able to spend that time with him. I've trained with Tom Givens, Craig Douglas, Hershel Davis and others that have that "real world" experience and many others that have trained with such people and are able to distill and share knowledge from those instructors and share that information with the willing. I have never been in a gunfight and pray I never am. I have had my bacon saved on a couple of occasions because of training I've received, the Good Lord's Grace and blind luck. eta: The training I attribute this to was from individuals that had not "shot" other individuals as in not been in a gunfight...but that had incredibly valuable ( to me) information they taught. I am grateful for that. I intend no disrespect to anyone posting here, but I don't understand the direction of some of the posts. Just my opinion and observation.4 points

So.....studying THIS event is not of any merit?...but studying fights pre 1900 is where it is at? Your post is somewhat confusing.....while I too find studying ALL gunfights I can get reliable info on no matter what the era useful, there is not any more value to studying something pre 1900 than something that happened in 1986. So I'm not sure exactly the point you are trying to make. For that matter a horse probably will get you where you want to go...but an automobile is far more efficient. And prior to 1940 there was no more reliable method of testing for diabetes than tasting the patient's urine....but no sane doctor is still gargling piss in 2016. But maybe you're right...maybe we should dismiss those folks who have spent a majority of their life actually educating themselves in all manner of armed and unarmed conflict, scientific method research, modern understanding of anatomy with regards to terminal ballistics, and running the gun at the ragged edge of human ability.... and instead simply read a book about the old west.........2 points

That can be a thread all to itself......CULTURE makes a difference. We see that in the FBI report of offenders who kill cops. The offender has grown up in a constant state of struggle and is often in a state of combat with victims and other predators. He has been arrested by the time he is 12 and carried a weapon since he was 14 . On the other hand the officers that many departments want to hire may have never even been in a fist fight because that would have gotten them in trouble in school. When those two cultures clash guess who has the advantage.... Also a quick anecdotal culture story.....at NTI (National Tactical Invitional) in 2007 I was talking to one of the judges as we waited for the next FOF venue to be ready.....he told me he has been a participant and or judge at all 17 NTI events and he could normally tell where someone was from by how they reacted in the scenarios. He said that people from the Northeast were VERY hesitant to pull a gun . He would just about have to zap 'em with a cattle prod to get them to shoot someone. People from the Southwest would normally give you 1 warning and then shoot. People from the South...they'd shoot you without even talking to you. I told him that was largely cultural. Many in the South are of Scots-Irish descent and back when their ancestors came over they moved inland to the Appalachians and if someone stole their cattle they wouldn't travel back to the magistrate and wait for them to do something, they'd gather their brothers and cousins and go get their cattle back......whereas the northeast was largely inhabited by folks who were more in line with "following rules" and lived in more urban areas or areas that the "crown" could easier control as opposed to the southern frontier. Many of us are also descended from folks who chose to fight for the Confederacy against what they saw as an invading army in the 1860s and the blood of those people still flows in our veins. When it is time to talk it is time to talk... but when it is time to fight...it is not time to talk. There is time to talk and time to fight but there is not a whole lot of overlap between the two. He said he'd never really thought of it that way but it made sense.....2 points

I understand it the same way Capbyrd described it. No will needed. If you're inheriting it (your Aunt as the executor is saying your uncle would have wanted you to have it), Form 5 for you and no tax. If you're buying it from your aunt, Form 5 and no tax for her, then Form 4 and $200 for you. https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/are-there-any-exemptions-making-or-transfer-tax-provisions-nfa-0 Bullet point 41 point

I'm excited about it. I've never hunted before, except for one day in a dove field that had a "no fly zone" over it last fall. A friend is taking me to a fellow church member's property where they seem to have good luck most of the time. We'll see how it goes!1 point

I am not sure to be honest on running full spectrum velocities. If you can give me exact (averages) Cartridge OAL, Case OAL, bullet length (may be different than what is default), and H20 capacity, I can easily run 2 or 3 different loads of 4064 and Varget for comparison. I can also try some other powders. Not pushing, but I suspect you are like me in that you don't want to spend $150 on QL, but let me tell you, it is some of the best money spent of anything I have bought for reloading.1 point

I'm a bit late to the party on this... More than that; i'm a bit dismissive... The fact is that more manure has been spread and more dollars passed out using this sad incident as the fodder over the last 30 years than any other such shoot out i can remember... What needed to be known about gunfight and shootin back was well known far before this incident happened... There were plenty of old gun fights to study dating back before the turn of the twentieth century that outlined and quantified the human and equipment factors that make for a "successful" (..read that survivable and the "bad guys finished"...) fire fight engagement... I am continually incredulous about this sort of thing; and the baloney and platitudinous pontifications that arise from these sad incidents by the "gunfight teaching class" who have never been in a gunfight... Lots of the "gun intelligencia" seems to think that everything began with them... Sorry, it didn't.... It began about the Civil War, and has continued to the present... Today's present day gunmen are no more smart nor tough than yesterdays...They may be better armed... If ya want ta know about gunfighting, as the great Jeff Cooper quipped; ya have ta talk to and study those who have been successful in the business... I think he is exactly right... Sadly, lots of 'em are dead now from old age... Thankfully, they didn't listen to the "gun intellegencia", the dammed gubmt bureaucrats (...non shootin FBI types, that is...), nor the political class who made money from giving lesser tools to those who need them most in order to make a buck for them and their buddies... Now that i've spent my fit for the day, i think i'll take a nap... Shootin leroy, the non-believin gun baloney geezer....1 point

I was back there this weekend and still no gun buster, but there is now a large sign that is next to ticket booth, it might have been there before but since we are members we do not go through the ticket line and I just happened to see it. It was a list of zoo rules, and at the bottom it stated something to the effect of "firearms are prohibited".1 point

115gr is not necessarily less powerful than 124gr or heavier bullets. Remington bulk pack 115gr is notoriously weak while the Winchester white box is relatively hot. Likewise, Aguila 124gr is pretty wimpy compared to S&B 124gr. Find a load that works and stock up.1 point

I'd take you up on that and even give you a little free ammo! Smart idea! I'll look and see if I'm a dealer for them, and if not, I'll become one :)1 point

The one and only time I ever had trouble was when I went "on a quest to lighten up my Glock trigger the most". I had zero trouble until I got into modifying the striker and striker spring... but other than that stupidity Ive never had issue, even with modified handguns with all weights of 9mm1 point

There may be quality problems with some imported ammo, but I've never found white box, PMC, American Eagle, etc. to be "weak". I have seen plenty of gun malfunctions related to poor technique/grip, cheap or damaged magazines, dirty & modified guns. An auto loading pistol is a finely balanced machine. The slide mass, spring force, recoil impulse of the ammo, friction, shooters grip, and more all in balance. Change any one of these and it may not work. Good points have been made by others about bullet selection, standard pressure, +P, +P+. Select the right ammunition for your gun. If you don't know what is "right" seek advice from the manufacturer, gunsmith, etc. Changing springs can help in some cases, BUT be aware that it may take several try to find a workable combination and it may only work with that load or a narrow range of loads. I have several stock guns that are as close to 100% as I can find, I have several slightly ,modified guns that are equally reliable but with a narrower range of ammo. In many 1000's of rounds of discount ammo I've had very few malfunctions related to anything but primers failing to ignitensure for some reason, and those are exceedingly rare. High end self defense ammo has always been 100% if the gun would feed it in the first place.1 point

If it's only a 300 yards or under gun then don't waste weight on a variable zoom optic. There is no need for an optic that size unless you're going for precision target shooting. For just hitting steel, a micro red dot like the Trijicon MRO, Aimpoint Micro or anything similar will do just fine.1 point

I haven't actually seen the first post. Hang on. . . . . . . . . . . . . Yes. Sneak 'em into the house, don't clean it for a while & if she asks, tell her you've had it for months. That's how we have 5 dogs & 6 cats. I learnt from a master.1 point

Totally agree with you all on this! It's just another step in the long term plan to instill Muslim teachings all across the country. Infiltrate the minds of the young ones to accept it. Get a generation involved and keep moving until the caliphate is established here. Don't believe it? Open your eyes and look at Western Europe. See what's happening there. It's coming here.1 point

What they said, not a bad afternoon project. Rip the whole thing off and replace it all. Don't think you'd need more than a circular saw and a screw gun. Good excuse to buy one of each if you don't already have them. Dig out under the landing, couple inches of gravel, block, and then water barrier (plastic sheet, tyvex, ...) between the blocks and the stringers. Use the pre-cut stringers, they're way easier even if you have to move the landing a bit, and attach them at deck level with joist hangers, not down below like they are now. To prevent the above coating disaster, wait for the wood to dry thoroughly (like a year) before putting any sort of stain or coating on it.1 point

The Media mirrors or flips images all the time, sometimes it make sense so the image appears to be looking into the center of the page or the story, other times there seems to be no reason. OMON (Russian: ОМОН—Отряд мобильный особого назначения, Otryad Mobilny Osobogo Naznacheniya or Special Purpose Mobility Unit) was a system of special police units of Federal Police within the Russian, and previously Soviet, Ministry of Internal Affairs. Edit: I just went back and looked at it again and it is a reflection showing the reverse image but what I said about the media reversing photos is correct.1 point

I know everyone has seen a Glock 17 but I bought this several years ago used , oiled it up , stored it away for my son, and now today is the day :no1: My son is 18 years old today and we are so proud of him ! He has awesome grades in school and in 2 months will be going to college to become a history teacher . He has never gotten in trouble , has gotten great grades , and just a great son . When he was smaller he would watch me shoot and he loved it . I got him a small Marlin bolt-action single shot 22LR . He did great . He learned to shoot my Glock 22 and my personal Glock 17 . He loved them . He even has wanted me to show him how to reload 9mm and we are in the beginning stages of that . So when he gets home from school today , his Mom , Sister , and I have an awesome surprise for him ! I am so excited for him . He has no idea about this . I am so excited to see his face that it's like I am the one getting a present ! Sorry to ramble on and just wanted to share . If you haven't already read it, there is a free copy of Suarez's Using Red Dot Pistols available as a PDF over at warriortalk. You've got a good looking gun and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I'm not a fan of the MOS because it's just 1 more layer of something to break over getting a slide milled. I'm fat so I can get away with a G34 EDC :devil:1 point
