  2. My solution... If I'm not happy with the color match, then I guess I'll just have to buy another stripped lower until I get a good match. I've actually learned this from my wife. If her shoes are not the right shade, then what's a girl to do? Likewise, if my lower/upper are not the right shade of black, then I gotta do what I gotta do ;) She has her own AR, so don't tell her I said that :nervous:

  3. Wipe them clean and then fill them with technical info.  Manuals, load data, schematics ANYTHING you know you cannot remember but would be invaluable WTSHTF.  Then buy a cheap solar charger...actually, buy two or three cheap solar chargers.

  4. I wondered the same thing... If I build out of parts how will I match finish? I don’t believe in painting guns and who wants to build a new gun and then pay to have everything refinished?

  6. I went through and set every one of the loaded cartridges on end on the table and then pulled out any that wobbled at all.  Some were really bad and were obviously wrong primers, some were not as noticeable, but for cautions sake I pulled them anyway.  From what I can tell, I used 53 Large Magnum Rifle primers and I have pulled out 90 rounds that showed any degree of wobble, so I think the chances are pretty good that I got them all.  90 is still a lot to disassemble, but it is much better than roughly 400.  I guess I know what I am doing all evening.  I was really hoping I would get to disassemble them the fun way tonight instead.

  9. Great advice already given.   Don't beat yourself up Preacher. Anyone that handloads will make mistakes eventually. We simply have to learn from them. And I definitely believe you'll be more diligent in the future. I've blown a Glock 21 with a double charge of W231 over 15 years ago. (Glock replaced the gun btw...Great customer service!). I learned to alter my process and setup, increased my already anal-retentive QC process, and I don't hesitate to pull apart any cartridge I might even begin to doubt for whatever reason...just part of practicing a safe handloading process.   At least you realized it before you had an accident my friend. I have my "handloading eraser" aka kinetic bullet puller handy on my bench...just in case. :nervous:   Patton nailed it as far as checking though. But if you have any serious doubts or concerns, just pull 'em and start over.   I've used 10's of thousands of magnum pistol primers in making 9mm rounds. The velocity increase is marginal when I've chrono'ed them, and no signs of increased pressure. But that is pistol...not rifle. The height of the rifle might even potentially bind a revolver cylinder depending on the tolerances...but I don't know this from personal experience.   We live and learn Preacher. So pick up that towel and get back to work!

  10. If it were all small primers it wouldn't matter, but the large are different. You should be able to run your finger across the rim and feel a slight bulge where it feels like the primer isn't seated all the way. Large rifle primers are taller than large pistol primers.

  15. Why can't manufacturers of [mostly metal] AR parts agree on a single finish so those of us with OCD don't have to worry about building an AR with multiple shades of black?

  17. Either I've been super lucky, or need my eyes checked. I'd wager I've put together maybe 30 something AR's and never noticed a big variation in receivers. I've seen rails that were off, but not so much receivers

  20. The whole Jan 2015 clause makes the law just as unclear.  It seems like this law is never used, but it is a bad law that could be used by someone on a power trip to hassle an otherwise honest person.     The time spent on changing up these sign requirements could have been used to just remove the law or at least remove the criminal penalty, but I guess there just wasn't much desire on the NRA's part to actually help people with permits.  This kind of bill and other supposedly pro gun bills moving through the legislature are just proof that no one really wants to make it any easier on people carrying with permits.

  21. I know everyone has seen a Glock 17 but I bought this several years ago used , oiled it up , stored it away for my son, and now today is the day :no1: My son is 18 years old today and we are so proud of him ! He has awesome grades in school and in 2 months will be going to college to become a history teacher . He has never gotten in trouble , has gotten great grades , and just a great son . When he was smaller he would watch me shoot and he loved it . I got him a small Marlin bolt-action single shot 22LR . He did great . He learned to shoot my Glock 22 and my personal Glock 17 . He loved them . He even has wanted me to show him how to reload 9mm and we are in the beginning stages of that . So when he gets home from school today , his Mom , Sister , and I have an awesome surprise for him ! I am so excited for him . He has no idea about this . I am so excited to see his face that it's like I am the one getting a present ! Sorry to ramble on and just wanted to share . [Uercel89/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_2975_zpswamhdxrc.jpg.html][/URL]

  22. How do you know it didn't shoot low left when hunted doves?  Did you pattern it before you hunted then?  Have someone of slightly different stature and height shoot it and see where it patterns for them.  My guess it's the way you are mounting and holding the gun.  Sporting shotguns are made to fit the average person.  Some better shotguns are sold with shims to change comb height, cast and or pitch.  Just .125" in comb height can change your POI by 4.1" at 40 yards.  Your eye is the rear sight on a shotgun and where and how you mount the gun will change the point of impact on a shotgun.

  24. Any sign that was conforming (pretty much any sign), will still be conforming until 2018. My rule of thumb is any sign I see is legal because I understand the property owner’s intent. If I don’t see it; it probably isn’t legal under any version of the law.

  25. The difference between a magnum and regular primer isn't going to kaboom a gun with any load. I think you will have more problems because they are the wrong size. But, because they are the wrong size, you can find them and disassemble them.
    1 point
  26. If your loads are mild you can probably just shoot them without incident if they will shoot.    A mildly loaded 44 in a stout old ruger revolver is going to be fine.  A past the redline hot 44 in a cheap pistol might not be fine.  Even better if its the 44 special, put those in a 44 mag and it will be fine ... a hot primer isn't going to push a 44 special past 44 mag levels.   the 45 acp would worry me a little but you said it wasn't them.    SO it comes down to if the 44 mags were loaded hot or not.

  27. I had a TSA agent tell me my diplomatic passport was not a valid form of identification.
    1 point
  28.     Well, not exactly. TN HCP is not valid for federal ID because apparently you can submit your picture to the state (somehow) rather than having it captured at the DMV. Now, some federal agencies may or may not be aware of this because it was a fairly new policy change. On the books, it shouldn't work for TSA but it doesn't surprise me that it does on occasion.........

  30. I'll take this in the context whereby specifically a TNDL is either specified or required with the response being...no. But its still a really good question and the state should really just go ahead and do the HCP as an add on to the TNDL and just issue an new DL card instead of the two separate cards.

  31. The original configuration of the MPA 971 The 2 huge problems with the original Masterpiece Arms 971 is with out the mag, it weighs in at over 10 lbs and MPA wanted to use the FAL hammer so they had to off set the MAC 11 upper from the FAL lower. As pictured here with the upper adapter in place. Most of that block of steel in front of the sight is solid steel. This makes the FAL rear sight useless so they never made the gun with a front sight. I use a modifyed AR hammer in a DSA alloy lower so I could center the FAL FCG under the MAC 11 reciever tube. The MPA adapter that joins the upper to the lower weighs over 2 lbs alone. I cut over 1 lb of steel from it and welded it to the upper. The rear section of the adapter was solid steel so I milled it out so the bolt assembly could be pulled straight out from the rear just as the FAL bolt. I made a alloy plug with a steel recoil core so the bolt wouldnt beat the plug into a mushroom. The original mag release worked backwards. You had to pull back on it to release the mag. I fixed that to forward pressure. I swapped out the steel FAL lower for a DSA alloy lower and that was nearly a 1 lb savings. This is one handy carbine now and is QD take down. The shroud is a cut down suomi unit that holds the handguards on by way of the detent retained flash suppressor pictured. The gun now wieghs 7.75 lbs with no mag and it has nice open sights. The target is 30 rds of wolf 9mm FMJ @ 25 yards. In the end testing, the stick mag proved to be unreliable. There just is not enough distance between the chamber mouth and magazine as was the case in the Sumoi. Altho a shorter 20rd mag may have enough spring strength to kick the rounds up to chamber level, I never did cut one down.....yet.

  32. No, it is not a substitute. The worst that will happen is you will get a citation and probably be successful in getting it dismissed. Personally, it is not a ticket I would write.

  34. Wonderful!   Hosting gamily holiday gatherings is a rite of passage. Most "kids" really don't want to make the change, but the parents/eldest family members usually get to a point where it is not only better and easier for them, but a necessity because of the logistics and stress involved.   Yes...I speak from experience on the topic. But I bet we all can as well.

  36. Unless the Vendor is irrefutably guilty of unethical or illegal business practices and that information has been shared with the TGO Staff first and we believe that there is legitimate cause for concern to protect the members at large, I honestly don't want to hear a bunch of complaints about the Vendor no matter who they are.   If you're in business, you are going to piss off someone or hurt someone's feelings sooner or later.  You might not get to a customer in your store fast enough to suit them.  You might not provide the sort of discount or price that suits them.  You might not provide the sort of "customer service experience" that suits them.  They might just not like the way you look, smell, talk, or dress.  Someone, somewhere, is going to get a stick up their butt about you and then use the Internet to malign you because they think that they have a right to do it.   If a consumer has an individual beef with a Vendor, they should take it up with that Vendor in person.  If they don't have to guts to do that, then I don't want them using TGO as their emotional dumping ground.   Just my thoughts on that matter.

  40. Actually I think it is awesome.  No, I am not joking.  I'd own one (not sure I'd pay $200 for it, though.)  I'd never carry it nor put it in my HD plan, etc. (I'd have no problem with a well tested, standard finished Hi Point as a 'stash' gun somewhere in the house - they shoot better than some might think) but as a fun gun I think it would be great.  Of course, I like sarcastic and ironic humor and there is definitely something ironically and sarcastically funny about a $100 bill finish pattern on a Hi-Point - and that is why I like it.  Imagine being at the range, pulling that out and saying to the stranger next to you (who would definitely be eyeballing it), "This here's my baby.  Total safe queen but I have to get her out and give her some lovin' every once in a while," and doing it with a totally straight face (before cracking up and letting them in on the joke.)
