Man, it feels like I havent logged into TGO in a year! Really though its only been 3 months. Between college, family, and work I truly dont know whether I'm coming or going sometimes! Anyways I just wanted to drop in and share some good news with my fellow TGO'ers. The news that the wife and myself are expecting our 2nd addition to the family in July! Our 6 year old daughter is ecstatic about it, but has already declared she WILL NOT be changing any diapers. Lol, hope everybody is doing well!3 points

I've got a printed copy of our amortization schedule in my top drawer. Every month when I pay the mortgage, I make the mortgage payment, and then find the next month's portion to principal, and pay that amount as well. I then cross both payments off the list. It's one of the most satisfying things I do every month. To each their own, but I'd much rather be totally out of debt and make the decisions about where my money goes than to just simply be content with, "mortgage interest is deductible." At the very least, print an amortization schedule on your mortgage and play around with it some. You'll be offended when you see the interest numbers - especially in the first half of the repayment period. I'd agree with others - pay off the cars first and get some rainy day savings squared away. But following that, feel good about putting the money towards your mortgage.3 points

Look at it this way. If your home was paid for, would you take out a home equity line of credit at a low rate and put that money in the stock market? If not, then pay off the mortgage. One thing your boss is forgetting is that when you no longer have a mortgage, you'll have the entire monthly payment as free cash flow for yourself to do with whatever you choose. Besides that, anyone who would advise me that walking away is a good option doesn't have the moral foundation to give me advice on anything.3 points

+1 on UTG pro slim. Several of us on the forum have installed them over the past year. And most, like myself, we're hesitant because of older UTG product quality. They did a really good job with this though.3 points

I mentioned doing a build thread in the PSA AR10 thread so here it is: I own several AR's and wanted something different, so I got a wild hair and decided to do one in 308. I want this to be a budget build, but it needs to be reliable and accurate enough to make hits on a 12" gong at 600yds.....something that the 308 is more than capable of. I decided on Aero receivers as they seem to be good quality...not the best, but not the worst. From my reading, they seemed to be a better choice than PSA so I caught one on sale at Brownells for $150. I'll put the price breakdown later but here are the receivers. I actually ordered them from different places so they weren't a matched set or anything. However, they fit great and the finish is the same on both and everything seems good to go. There are a few rough marks on the inside of the upper where the BCG rides. Hopefully it won't cause any issues, but we shall see. I had some parts laying around, so that will help with overall cost. Here is what I have on order: Ballistic advantage 16" premium barrel - guaranteed 1moa or less using match ammo AIM nitride bcg - all my research says this is a great bcg for the money 308 buffer and spring receiver extension and endplate Aero pins - these are longer than a standard LPK midlength gas tube Forward assist kit Parts I had on hand: Kies adjustable gas block BCM gunfighter grip LPK Magpul ACS-L stock specwar muzzle brake Still need to order: handguard - not sure what I want to go with yet. Thinking either MI or SLR in 14" or 15" geissele trigger Optic Raptor charging handle Here is what I've got so far: 2 points

What DaveTN said, however there are some local shops that won't accept a C&R, others that will want to run a background check anyway. The online stores who regularly deal in C&R guns (Classic, AIM, SOG, etc.) will file your info as they would any transfer between FFL's, in fact most of them have a system by which you can upload a copy of your certificate in advance, then your subsequent purchases will automatically pull the document up when you checkout.2 points

I personally think you would be better off getting a Magpul Slim or regular MOE handguard. You won't have to take anything off, it won't weigh a ton, and you can still mount rails if you want them. Like this.2 points

Correct me, if I'm wrong. Sounds like you want a handguard that will cover/hide the gas block. Judging from the pic you have a carbine length gas system, so you'll be looking for a 12" or 13" handguard. There's a lot more options with a free float handguard. If this is your rifle for having fun at the range and you aren't trying to impress everyone, just look around eBay and get one in your price range. Look for one that's 13" or longer, make sure it comes with a barrel nut, and be wary of a super slim design (it may not fit over your gas block, so check the inner diameter carefully and match it against the height of your gas block). You can find quite a few between $50 and $75 that will serve their purpose long enough for you to change your mind again later and go another route (most of us do). If this is your battle rifle and/or the one you strap on to impress your neighbors while you mow the yard, you may want a reputable name brand that is built a little sturdier. It'll be better built, will last longer, have better mounting hardware, and will have stronger picatinny rails. Your options start with a very serviceable and well made UTG rail or Mid-West Industries and go all the way up to the barely more functional but much more prestigious brands like Noveske and Geissele. This is your only real option, if you ask the AR snobs over on AR15.com, who think they are all high-speed operators. In the end, it's your Barbie doll, you can dress her up for the prom or your can dress her up for around the house...totally your call.2 points

I am not a money guru, but my wife is. She built the house in 97 and she would pay a half payment extra a month. I don't remember when she originally planned to have the house paid off. When I came along and our monies combined she doubled the payment. The house has been paid off for almost 10 years now. Our vehicles, motorcycles and camper is paid for. We do not carry debt, period. I follow my wife's plan, she pays for everything on a credit card and pays that card off every month. We do no let that debt ride month to month, as such no interest is paid. We usually get a few grand in cash back at the end of the year. Not too shabby since we don't pay interest. And since we are debt free, she pays the max amount in to her retirement accounts. What works for other people may not work for you. Take what advise you can and apply to your needs as you see fit. Good luck.2 points

My $.02... if you're worried about weight, think about a slim keymod rail. Quad rails are heavy. Much lighter to just put a couple rail pieces where you need them. I like the look of a longer rail, and the newer slim stuff allows that without a lot of weight. I'm about to dump a 13" YHM quad rail for a slim keymod on an older build I have from back when quad rails were all the rage.2 points

Fluke 117 or if you want to go bad ass a fluke 177 is top of the line. The 117 is fast rugged almost water resistant and is easy on 9v batteries. I use one almost daily at work. It should work great for your grandkids one day. I can get whatever I want but for a digital mm go 117, avoid the 115 as it takes to long to show dcvoltage hope this helps PS fluke leads and accessories are awesome! Sears makes a nice accessory kit for meters for 20 bucks2 points

Fluke. Pay once, cry once. Mine is about 20 years old now and still running strong. I used it for a decade in some of the nastiest industrial environments.2 points

The scenario you are describing is called a "zero-sum game", and that is true for options trading. However, investing in individual stocks (and most equity based mutual funds) is not a zero-sum game. If a stock goes up, wealth is created. Everyone that owns that stock makes money. If a stock goes down, everyone that owns that stock loses money (and wealth is destroyed).1 point

Past 2x magnification you can't see a front sight. You can't even see a flip up BUIS past 2x. Anywho. If you truly want a free float rail your procedure needs to go as follows. Remove flash hider, remove gas block, remove handguard, remove delta ring and spring. At this point, if you are using a rail that utilizes the stock barrel nut you're good, if not you need to take the barrel nut off. Then install the barrel nut that comes with your rail, then gas block, then flash hider. Now, you can get rails that drop in to the existing delta ring and save yourself some work such as the UTG pro drop in that's just over 12" long and will cover your gas block. All you would have to do is change the handguard itself out. These aren't truly "free float" rails, but they will achieve the look you want. From your posts I can tell you're new to this so I'm going to try to explain about your gas system. Your gas tube length is determined by your barrel, not your handguard. Your barrel has a gas port drilled in it and aside from welding that hole up and drilling a new one in a different location, your gas port will always remain right where it is. So no, you will never buy a new gas tube unless you successfully shoot enough to rot that one away.1 point

Depending on how much modification/stippling was done, the magwell may be deformed. It wouldnt take much grinding, melting of polymer to bend it slightly out of spec or to weaken the polymer to the point that the pressure from your grip in conjunction with trying to release the mag causes it to hang. My suggestion is to strip the mag release completely out, take the top end off, and try inserting mags and see if the hang up when let go, if there is nothing holding them they should fall out as soon as you move your hand, however if there is any lag time, then the magwell is out of spec.1 point

Solid advice all around. You guys have me rethinking our strategy. If we pay off both vehicles that's an additional $700 month we could put toward the mortgage. My wife car will be paid off in 10 months anyways. I appreciate the responses.1 point

So if it were me. I'd take the extra money and pay off the vehicles sooner. You'll save money on interest there too, and they depreciate faster. Then once they're paid off take the money you were paying in payments and put all of that extra on the house. This way the budget stays balanced.1 point

Im not sure if the article was talking about a State issued HCP, or a LEOSA carry credential. I agree, I guess, in that I think we all should be able to carry constitutionally, and I don't like some folks being "more equal' than others, but The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) is designed to help a retired officer defend himself in situations like if after a career of putting away bad guys, he is subsequently targeted by a bad guy he put away. The assumption is that these retired law enforcement officers may be more susceptible to retribution that the general populace. I am a HCP holder, but due to the LEOSA credential allowing carry in certain places that the HCP does not, I decided to get both credentials. In my case, I dont consider myself in any more danger than anyone else, as my law enforcement service wasnt around here, and I think it would be difficult to track me down after all these years, but, since I was eligible and the threat DOES exist, I figured I would go ahead and get it. Heck, these days you never know if we will wake up one day and find that the HCPs have all been suspended in a martial law declaration!1 point
