1. Normally I don't chime in on stuff like this...but I can relate. True story when we lived in Valparaiso Indiana my wife would shop at a no frills grocery store called Town and County. It was a nice clean place no fancy coffee bars and such but good prices. We are a single income household by choice so my wife clips coupons. She usually has all the corresponding items placed together and her coupons organized. It might take the cashier an extra thirty seconds to ring her up. One day there was this fine upstanding entitlement person behind her in line with her Bridge card( Indiana's version of the ebt card) out who told her she needs to get the F out of her way and she ain't got time to be waiting on some cracker with coupons. Love my wife she told the little princess that when she starts paying for her own groceries she can complain. Until that time I suggest you close your legs keep your mouth shut and get a job.

 6. I have been in line many times at Walmart waiting to check out. There will be a woman and a guy in front of me and they will have 2 carts full of food. They will pay for the food with a food stamp card and when it comes time to pay for the 6 cartons of cigarettes the guy or maybe the woman will pull out a wad of 100 dollar bills and pull out a couple to pay for the smokes. Then as you follow them out into the parking lot they are loading the stuff is a Lincoln Navigator or Cadillac Esclaide with wheels that probably cost 3 grand on it. That is the way this country has gone. I quit going to Walmart because I didn't like to see stuff like that going on and it seemed to be on a regular basis when I would be there.................

 10. After reading a lot of the news sites different articles over the last 2 days something about this attack has had a different effect on the general population.Reading a lot of the comments afterwards it appears that the American population is not buying the politicians anti gun rhetoric this time.I like a lot of the commentators feel that to enact any type of gun control would in fact make the people more vulnerable-not more safe.I guess what I am trying to say is that its about time some of these citizens are finally waking up to what the rest of us already were thinking.

 11. Practicing differing distances is not to advance on a target, its not to go all Hollywood on a terrorist.  It is designed to be able to engage someone that is actively trying to engage you.  You need to be familiar with the POA and POI of your chosen SD weapon at different ranges so you can get a high probability lethal hit on your adversary.    LEO training is another thing all together, but for most of us, and I include myself even though I am retired military, our responsibility is to engage the target if they are trying to engage us.  If they are in a different room, you are better off trying to exit stage left.  And as you said, be prepared to be confronted by LEO, or other CCW permit holders; there is no hard and set rule of how to act or how to distinguish between a shooter and a responder so my rule of thumb is to engage those that engage me.         For the most part I agree, if I don't have to be in the same battle space with an adversary that outguns me I wont be.  But being prepared is not a waste of time, nobody KNOWS how they will react under fire so having a bit of prior training goes a long way.  When I first deployed to a war zone, my only fear was not knowing how I would react under those circumstances, or how others would react that were supposed to be my backup.  With a few exceptions, everyone did their job and I am glad to say that when the time came, my reactions coincided with my training and I am still here due to that fact.  Now, I am a civilian and my number one priority is to protect my family, myself, or others if the situation dictates.  But I am not LEO, and I am not a military door kicker so I won't be actively seeking confrontation with any shooter unless I have no other choice.

 13. A nice Christmas gift headed to Wisconsin for a lucky guy. This is made from 3/16" thick 1095 carbon steel. It has IPE scales and copper pin and lanyard hole. IPE for those that don't know it the same wood very expensive decks and made from for it's durability and weather resistance. It's a very hard wood.....kind like grinding steel without the sparks. The OAL length is about 13" with a blade length right at 7 1/2". I think it would make a good camp knife, skinner of even a defensive knife. It's been double acid etched and has jimping for your thumb.

 17. While I agree that this type of test is extreme, the initial drop it in the mud puddle, definitely seems like something that could actually happen and it did cause a failure.  That says a lot more to me than "Hey look this broke after I threw it at something."

 18. I've been doing this for so long I don't remember when it started. At fist my wife used to get a bit po'ed because I wouldn't like where the server would place us, or that I'd always asked her to swap chairs so I faced the entrance. Then she didn't like that I wanted to sit across the table rather than side by side. I think it served to purposes. More room to more quickly, and as I get older and slower I really like this part, and easier to eat when not jammed together. Yeah, no more close romantic dinners. lol But recently she has begun to understand why.

 19. I'm really not sure what that test showed us other than that, with determined effort, you can break anything.  The fact that sand and grit kept it from going into battery isn't really surprising either.  I've seen this happen with the vaunted Glock 19 and 17 in the past too.   All of the crap he did to that gun is beyond the parameters of what 99% of the people carrying them will ever expose them to.  It doesn't change my mind about my VP9 at all.

 20. Just as they're angry with us, we certainly should be angry with the folks attacking us. I don't intend to pressure anyone to be more pc, but the idea that every single person who follows a particular religion is a shoe bomber in the making and should be removed from our country is wrong. It's no different than when we imprisoned all the Japanese citizens during WWII, just for being Japanese in America. I don't have any more control over our foreign policy than you do, and I also haven't invaded/ enslaved/ drive anyone off their land. There's no reason for me, or you, or anyone else alive today to feel bad or apologize for that. That happened 100 years ago, but America's hands are still meddling in the Middle East today. While I don't think we deserve the jihad that's been unleashed, I think it's important that we have some understanding of what might be driving it. You can't beat an enemy you don't understand. I appreciate the kind remarks, and just like OS said: if the stuff ever comes down to a physical fight over here I'm on your side. Looks like the terrorists -really- hate folks like me. We probably do have a lot in common. I'd offer to get a beer and discuss it, but it's kind of a hike. Split the difference and head for Kansas City?

 23.  Shooting at varying distances is great but realistically if you're in a location with long hallways like several hundred feet they will probably be cluttered with people running so popping off rounds may not be an option rather than going cover to cover or just advancing toward the threat. I have been in an active shooter/killer school this week and it was weird that right before San Bernadino happened we were training for breaching locked/chained doors and suspects with bombs.   Also something to mention and I know it is always a concern but with this type of situation the way officers were trained to rush in and neutralize the threat is with HCP holders and off duty LEO is being distinguished by the incoming officers as not a threat. I don't know the solution but be prepared to drop down and disarm very quickly so no good guys take a round. I would hate to send lead down to someone is who isn't deserving.   Also the only the thing I changed up with carrying was just ensuring an extra mag. I carry my Glock 27 using a 23 mag and carry a 22 mag as my spare along with a smaller pocket clip led flashlight. I think between 29 rounds I can either defend myself, get somewhere safely, or the cavalry has arrived.

 26. I don't know why do many folks believe their chance is "slim" when using a pistol to confront a person with an AK.  Yes, the obvious advantage goes to the person with the rifle, due to power, range and capacity.  However, those advantages are useless in the hands of someone unprepared/untrained to deal with being shot at.  These types are cowards who aren't looking for a fight; they're looking for a slaughter.  Whether they're armed with a military style rifle or a bazooka, 9mm still hurts.  It still has an effect on their ability to function and breathe.  Being shot at is an emotional event for those who aren't prepared for it, and for these types of people, chances are they have never been shot at before.  The only way they're going to find out how well they react when that first round comes screaming at them is once it actually happens.   Regardless of whether they shoot back, flee, give up or die in place, it will take the focus off slaughtering the sheep.  It will save lives, no question.  Certainly the smart people here have figured out that all these mass shootings have occurred in gun free zones.  That isn't by accident.  There is a reason there.

 30.   There still is a hell of a lot better chance to take them or one out if you and "OTHERS" are armed than no one armed. They can't point and shoot everyone at once, if they shoot the guy with the Beretta 92 then the woman with the 10mm to the side of the shooters has a chance while the dude with the Glock 21 on the other side can fire at them also. Also I don't believe any terrorists have worn real body armor yet, just tactical vests that don't stop anything. Like I said, they can't shoot everyone at once and even if you die, at least you have a chance to get one before that and that maybe 10 other lives saved. Armed you have a chance at least, unarmed you're simply jihad fodder.

 32. I am not an expert on anything but here are my thoughts and they are worth every cent you paid for them: I really don't think there is a good way to choose a side-arm using the San Bernadino shooting as a model. As peejman said, if a couple of folks bent on killing everyone in the room walk in and just start shooting then chances of stopping them with a handgun are slim. Not impossible but slim. Throw in that both of those individuals - who are ready and willing to die in order to complete their massacre - are wearing body armor and the chance of saving oneself or anyone else using a handgun that can actually be carried on one's person become vanishingly small. I mean, if you have ice water in your veins, nerves of steel and reflexes that would put Bruce Lee to shame then you might manage to bypass the armor by getting a couple of headshots on moving targets who are firing their rifles at you as quickly as they can pull the trigger but unless your name is John McClain (in which case you'd do all that while saying, "Yipee-cayee, moth.....") it probably ain't going to happen. What might happen is that one will choose a larger, heavier handgun while hoping against hope and most logic that it will drop those two heavily armed, armored attackers quickly and effectively. Then, after a few weeks of not having to face such a threat that person may begin to leave said larger, heavier handgun (which probably still wouldn't do the job in the above situation) at home, in the vehicle, etc. because it is too much to carry, especially if one wants to carry concealed. So now, rather than carrying a small, easily concealable handgun in a caliber that has a good chance of being effective against much more likely threats (tweaker, armed robber, etc.) because he or she is concerned that such a small, light weapon will not be 'enough' that person is not really carrying at all. Then, again, I suppose one could always try and figure out a way to comfortably carry one of these: or something like this: http://www.magnumresearch.com/Firearms/Magnum-Research-4570-Revolver-75-inch-Barrel.asp

 37. I just can’t imagine how intelligent people believe that background checks will have any impact. I think eventually they stop private sales without background checks; and the killings will continue. Farrok; like most of the other shooters would not have been stopped by a background check. So what will stop these people? Well it won’t be gun control, and they aren’t afraid to die for their beliefs, so obviously the threat of death or jail doesn’t impact them. Stopping their shooting spree immediately is the only thing that will lessen the body count. That will require some type of force. An active shooter needs to be made unwilling or unable to fire his weapon. What part of that do these people not understand? How can they believe they can stop anyone from getting guns? If we had a way to do that wouldn’t we have done it with drugs? Drugs kill a lot more Americans than shooters.

 40.   I will occasionally embellish a written accent, etc because I'm having fun with the discussion. What's wrong with being a barefoot hillbilly? I've known some that were pretty sharp folks.    As for the assertion that I'm poking fun at segments of the population that can only respond to things with blanket statements or sound byte sized snippets, I just have a very hard time taking things like that seriously. TGO is home to some very intelligent, articulate people who can carry on discussions way over my head to say the least, so over the years I've come to expect some pretty good things from this place. Yes, I'm picking with folks but in the same way I'd pick on my buddy when I saw him get dumped off an ornery horse. I know what you're capable of, maybe a little pressure will help you do better next time. I've always went back and forth with friends over silly stuff and that's all I intended here. I've had a lot of fun with this entire discussion, and haven't meant to be intentionally condescending at any point. I apologize if it came across that way. I participate on TGO, and this thread, because it's fun. It makes me laugh, makes me smile, makes me think. I don't think for a minute that I'll 'win' or change anyone's mind, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy a good debate.

 42. If a couple BG's burst into a room where you're sitting around a table and start banging away with rifles.... honestly, you're pretty much f__ked.  It's up to God or fate or whatever you believe in to get you out of that one.    Awareness is about the only take-away I can come up with.  As I understand it, these folks were at a "holiday" (read Christmas) party and the Muslim guy in the office left pissed off (shock).  I get the impression no one in there would have ever dreamed he'd come back with a friend to kill them all.  Be aware where-ever you are.  Always know where the exits are.  Always know what might work as cover (which is pretty much nothing in a typical office building).   Maybe improving your draw/fire time is another take-away.  Seconds count.  Fractions of seconds count.

I want to at all times know who or what is coming in the door. If you see guys coming towards the door with guns out long or short you begin moving right then to prepare for what is about to happen. 47.   At any given time somewhere on the planet, people are experiencing what most Americans would interpret as end days, if it were happening to them.  All over the continent of Africa there is brutal war, genocide and famine.  If we saw that on our shores, the average person would believe that the end of time is upon us, when it is really just our turn.  So in this context, I prepare for probability, not prophecy.  I have several courses of action which I can take based on the situation which put me in a higher bracket of survivability than the average person.    Nothing is 100%, but I won't fool myself into thinking that just because I know how to survive in the wilderness means I can survive in the wilderness when millions of others are trying to do the same.   I also understand that it is in our DNA to develop mutually beneficial relationships with other humans for survival.  This means that the average person is more likely to work out peaceful solutions than risk their life kicking in your door for some twinkies.  In most situations where a government breaks down and there is a period of lawlessness, it doesn't last long.  The primary perpetrators are younger males with no family, or no sense of responsibility to their families.  It's a small, but violent segment of society.  Most people will have people they need to provide food, shelter and security for, and will quickly understand that security is a communal concept in an environment of anarchy.  It is the natural default organization of small communities around the world.  The US would be no different in the absence of government control.
