  1. So I am thinking about starting a TGO Hall of Shame upon which I will post the names of members who have, for various reasons, earned themselves a public shunning.   Extreme?  Hear me out.  :)   Every so often I have to spend an hour or so of my time in email and on the phone fighting to keep $20.  Because every so often someone buys a Benefactor membership here, uses it to post some ads in the Trading Post, and then goes to PayPal and disputes the charge saying that we charged them without authorization.     Bear in mind that we do not do automatically recurring subscriptions for this precise reason.  I never want TGO to automatically debit someone's account and be the reason why they overdraft at their bank, or can't buy groceries or put gas in their car.  An unexpected debit could easily cause any of those scenarios to play out.   So when someone buys a Benefactor membership, it's not a mistake.  They did it willingly.  And as most of you know, a Benefactor membership on TGO has some pretty immediate value and perks, the least of which not being the ability to use our Trading Post to post advertisements.  Which means that anyone who summarily demands a refund from PayPal is essentially trying to defraud TGO and "screw the system", so to speak.   And that's why I am tempted to start a Hall of Shame.   Because if you're willing to rip us off, everyone ought to know it.     What do you guys think?

  2. I wonder if having a minimum post count would help? Don't make it a crazy number but requiring anyone who wants to sell something to have a minimum of 5 or 10 posts would cut down on those who register to dispute them.   Another option could be that staff approves all posts by those who do not have 10 posts.   I think there is a large segment of the population who does not believe it is stealing if it is done on the internet. I have had people try to dispute stuff with me even though I had a no questions asked money back guarantee. But I believe it was never about getting the refund and all about being able to keep what I sold them without paying for it. And if I could have convinced my local LE to I would have prosecuted every single one of them.   I would rather see a hall of shame with all the classic threads where people have lost their minds.

  8. I like the idea of a Hall of Shame for people who provided so much entertainment value here in threads that lead to them getting banned.     As for people stiffing you,  unless it is real common and not just the occasional act I'd take the high road and file it under the cost of doing business. Karma is a cruel mistress and those people will get theirs someday.

  9. No, you should ban them. If I understand what you are saying, they know they need to be a benefactor to sell something. So they place the item for sale and then later dispute the charge? Who wants to buy and sell guns with people like that; ban them and call it a day. I’m generally against banning people over BS; buts that’s just plain criminal. You could post who they are though for the entertainment value or in case they sell other places. A lot of us have been benefactors a long time and rarely sell anything.

  11. That old hag needs to shut her damn pie hole. She couldn't be Secretary of State without disaster so I have no idea why anyone would feel she could be a decent POTUS. Then again....look at the loonies that support crap like she's spouting. Honest to God......any moron knows only criminals would have guns if law abiding citizens were stripped of their right. She should frequent more "gun free zones" without her armed security force. Crap like this makes me crazy.

  12. A Federal gun ban would create a new group of criminals overnight. I can’t believe that could get passed through Congress. Of course Hillary would do it if she could; so would Obama. Neither of them gives a damn about the United States Constitution or an individual’s right to self-defense, and couldn’t care less if they violate it.

  14. I went to the Green Hills theater today to watch Sicario(which was awesome), and I saw staff wanding people looking for weapons before a special viewing. I was disturbed by this and spoke to a cop there. I asked him where the signage was banning weapons from the premises? I looked everywhere and not a one sign in sight. The manager said, "I think we have one somewhere...." Yeah, that wand is gonna do a lot of good when a psycho goes out the unguarded exit door in the theater and gets weapons. Rolling my eyes at that.. The cop didn't know dick about proper signs or anything like that. I don't think he fully understood anything. I'm preaching to the choir here, but I was annoyed by it all. Just had to get it off my chest.

  15. I don't know how to start this. Very emotional topic but i feel that i can share it here among folks who would understand. A couple months ago, my great uncle (87) passed away after a battle with cancer. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and distinguished himself with meritorious service with the 45th Infantry Division. He was awarded the bronze star along with other medals and was honorably discharged in 1956.   He was like a third grandfather. Due to geographical challenges, he was much closer to me than many other family members. He taught me how to shoot. My first round was fired on his farm in the hills of North East TN.   Before he passed, i expressed to my grandmother how much one particular gun in his collection meant to me. It was a 9mm. When i shot it around age 10, i had no idea of the significance. When my grandmother inquired about this gun on my behalf, she was told that it had been sold. Over the years, the gun in question served by my great uncles right hand. It was the gun found under the newspaper on the coffee table. He had many guns but this one was special to him. As i aged, he finally told me the story of the "9mm." This particular gun was brought back from Germany after WWII by a friend of his. It was a German P-38.    After he passed, i would have been pleased with the opportunity to purchase any of his guns from the family. Unfortunately, that opportunity never came. However, my grandmother called me tonight and everything changed. She told this story to another family member only to find out that he had purchased the gun from my great uncle. He graciously gave the firearm to her for me to pick up. For this i cannot thank him enough. It's not only a damn cool piece of history--it's a family heirloom that i will treasure as long as i live.   I don't think i can say anything to this individual to express how much i appreciate the generosity shown during a very tough time. I greatly miss my uncle and my friend but i this gesture will allow me to keep his memories close whenever i pick up this firearm.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hh5UevdKIk4

  18. I don't like the wall of shame because of potential liability issues. The person doesn't have to be in the legal "right" to file a court action. People can (and do) file for frivolous or other reasons. Imagine some anti-gun poster with the legal support of some anti-gun group doing this specifically to get posted on the wall so they could file a slander lawsuit, for example. It's not worth the hassle, in my opinion.    I'd suggest that posting an ad requires 1) At least 30 days of membership to include at least 20 real posts. (No "Me too" or multiple posts to that in your opinion, are made just to pad the post count. 2) An upgrade to benefactor.    There may be some better policies at other gun groups. I'd suggest checking them out.

  22.     Sure that's feasible.  If you're hunting in the woods in east TN, its tough to get a shot much beyond 75 yds anyway.   The SKS will have 3-4x more energy, plus its just a cool old milsurp.    The SKS is a "gateway" gun.  They're fairly plentiful, inexpensive, easy and fun to shoot.  You'll get one and think... you know, this is a pretty cool old gun.  Before long, all sorts of cool old guns will begin to appear... 91/30's, K31's, Mausers, 1903's, Enfields,  ...  :)

  29. Funny but interesting...from chan 5 bna     NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Law enforcement agencies across Tennessee face a major weapons recall. The Department of Defense has sent a memo ordering agencies to return certain surplus military equipment deemed inappropriate for local law enforcement. The memo requires departments to return all bayonets, M-79 grenade launchers and tracked armored vehicles, like tanks, that were obtained through the federal military surplus program. NewsChannel 5 Investigates learned that four Tennessee law enforcement agencies must now return the bayonets they recently ordered through the program. "They have to return the equipment,"  said David Roberson with the Tennessee Department of General Services which oversees the military surplus program in Tennessee. "There aren't any exemptions being granted. An executive order has been issued." Five Tennessee law enforcement agencies must return grenade launchers that they received. And 11 departments must return tracked armored vehicles. Concern about the military surplus program rose after people witnessed the police response to protestors in Ferguson, Missouri. President Obama issued an Executive Order limiting the program and ordering this recall. NewsChannel 5 Investigates discovered many Tennessee departments have used the surplus program to order military equipment used to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan. The departments obtain the equipment at little or no cost but must pay for transportation and maintenance. Our investigation discovered that the Tennessee Highway Patrol ordered 135 bayonets in 2009 from the military surplus program. The head of the THP, Col. Tracy Trott, told us last year that his department was getting out of the program and said it had no use for the bayonets. "They were getting all this junk," Trott said. "Tents, bayonets that I can't see any reasonable need for it." The recall does not include mine-resistant vehicles -- used overseas to protect soldiers from roadside bombs. Lebanon Public Safety was one of several local departments to get one of the vehicles. "The situations we would use this vehicle in is hostage negotiations," said Mike Justice with Lebanon Public Safety. All departments must return the items by April of next year.

  31. It's been a while since this happened but yes, we had someone post a bunch of stuff for sale and then try to reverse charges a few months later.  After going back and forth with the member's bank over it, I finally just told them to refund the person and I banned them permanently from the site.   The more I think about the notion of just taking the high road, the more I think it's probably the right idea.

  48. Whaaa? My kids and I love that movie. If anything, I interpreted the plot to have a liberty-oriented subtext, as the plot centers around defeating an overbearing, militarized government which seeks to control the individual liberties of its citizens. Plus I do the Batman voice for my kids. Makes them crack up every time. Life is too short to be so serious 24/7. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
