  1.   Hmm...let's give the "he may have tried to hurt himself" story an old fashioned smell test.   The prisoner, who is currently in jail, was separated from Gray by a metal partition and could not see him. His statement is contained in an application for a search warrant, which is sealed by the court. The Post was given the document under the condition that the prisoner not be named because the person who provided it feared for the inmate’s safety.   The document, written by a Baltimore police investigator, offers the first glimpse of what might have happened inside the van. It is not clear whether any additional evidence backs up the prisoner’s version, which is just one piece of a much larger probe.     The prisoner, who is in jail, could not be reached for comment. No one answered the phone at his house, and an attorney was not listed in court records.     So...this is a leaked story, to a major newspaper- which guarantees the story will be re-posted/linked/shared by the traditional media and blogosphere alike.  It was written by the police and can't be confirmed by the "witness" or anybody who might have had contact with him since then...   ...call me skeptical.       He was in police custody when he died.  The Baltimore Police Commissioner already admitted to flaws in the way he was handled.   I don't care how long is rap sheet was, they were responsible for his safety.  If we can't get it in us to be upset when someone dies in police custody because of intentional or incompetent conduct, we have a problem.

  8. So, I'm far from a Titans fan, but I do like to see them do well since it's a positive for the community.   But drafting Mariota?  I really don't see any large benefit over Mettenberger that justify using the #2 pick on him.  I think the Titans front office were hoping for the kings ransom for that pick, and seriously misjudged their environment.   Here's hoping they draft some good offensive lineman...otherwise no matter if it's Mariota or Mettenberger taking snaps, Titans QB is still going to be the most dangerous job in Tennessee.

  10.   I had a conversation along these lines with a black coworker, once.  This was a few years ago when the shrub was president.  We started talking about race and I told her that, in my opinion, it wasn't the whites oppressing the blacks or the blacks problems for whites (she used the term 'blacks' of 'black folk', not 'African Americans', herself.)  Heck, I'm too busy trying to survive to have time to oppress anyone.  Instead, it is the people who either make money and gain fame from the convlict or who are able to get away with things that oppress us all (politicians) because we are too busy being at each others' throats to see where the real problem lies.  I went on to say that I have more in common with the honest, hard working black man down the street who - like me - gets up and goes to work everyday, pays taxes and has little influence over the way things are done than I have with the Bushes, the Clintons or Bill Gates and he has more in common with me than with Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton.  She nodded her head for much of what I was saying and, when I finished, stated that she thought I was absolutely correct.

  11.   It's a fact that minorities are engaged (I’m speaking non-lethal engagements here, ie: police stops, arrests) more than non-minorities by law enforcement, largely as a result of profiling.  From Boston, to New York, to DC...this is a problem up and down the densely populated northeast corridor.  Throw in Chicago, and Los Angeles for good measure, and we have a national problem.    I'd be ready to take to the streets if I was in that demographic and can't fault their emotions.  When they march on City Hall and the Police stations they have my full support.  That support is non-existent for the folks looting CVS and other places of business.  It's a shame the rioters are taking away the attention from the legitimate protests.       So?

  12.   If you wanted to get the police in trouble, and yourself off the hook, how would you go about it?    Me, I'd bash my face against the side of the van so there are gashes, bumps, or even a broken nose for my booking photo.  I certainly wouldn't try to give myself a severed spine, which could kill me, and I wouldn't even know how to go about it if I wanted that option.       Or they are dangeling a plea bargain or dismissial of the charges in his face for saying he thinks Gray intentionally was trying to injure himself.  I'm just not trusting a leaked story by the BPD that tries to move the spotlight from their investigation.

  13.   Aside from the not so casual reminder to the government that people can and will rise up, the riots serve no purpose.  I'm not supporting them, but I am supporting those people who took to the streets in legitimite protest.   If I was living under the heavy handed thumb of the police state like minorities in big cities are, I wouldn't be standing by quietly for the same old "sweep it under the rug" once the media attention dies down treatement either.  Government needs to know people are watching.

  19. Well since I got a Glock 29 for my birthday, I needed a new holster. I've had great luck with some cheeper kydex eBay holsters so here's my newest one. Came from Badger Concealment. His store is badgerconcealment663. It came usps in about four days. I have to say I love it. With the beefy slide Glocks I like a kydex holster. It is nice and snug and fits the gun perfect. I've had trouble finding holsters I like because I'm a larger fellow. It makes the gun sit a little low, and I like that. Hides it perfect and even works for my 26. All in all great little holster and good quality. I'll buy another for sure.

  20. As some of you know, I just turned 18 with 22 years experience last week. Got my blood results back today and lets say they are better then when I was 25.   Since Christmas I have drop 40 pounds, 3 inches off my waist.(second year in a row lost 3 inches).   The biggest change I made was since Feb 23 to April 22 I had ZERO fast food.   I cooked most of my meals at home and was pretty careful on what I eat.  Allot of homemade chili if you aren't from Texas as it did have beans.   My Total Cholesterol  went from 168 to 110.  My LDL was about 55.  (don't have the paper in front of me) My Triglycerides went from 271 last year to 91.    I was floored when I saw that 110.  I remembered joking with him at the office that I had made big changes and I would be hurt if I hadn't got down to 150.       During my visit my doctor had said the main thing he would like to see my Triglyceride and weight to come down.  He still would like to see my drop 80 pounds.  I am going to try.  This has been an eye opener.   With the fit bit I have been much more active but that only started about a week before my doctor's visit so I know that wasn't a big factor.    I really believe it was the avoiding fast food for 2 months made that big of a difference.  I intend to keep that up with the new walking.   I had been over 300 cholesterol about 5 years ago, diet and exercise then got me to 230. Then I  taking some cholesterol medicine for the past 2 or 3 years.  That was only getting me from about 230 to the 170 range.    I also remember in my 20's I was always around 200, (fast food) but years ago anything under 200 was considered fine, now I think they want closer to 100.

  21. So, convinced myself to finally buy one of these. Katadyn Pocket It should be here soon. I have never owned a device like this but figured I would pick on up. Goes down to .2 micron and is silver impregnated. That means it should get everything but some of the smaller viruses. Biggest benifit of spending $290? 20 year warranty and up to 13,000 gallons dependent upon water quality. Of course, you can also use UV light to kill off viruses/bacteria. Guess what the sun emmits! My research though has shown in the United States viruses aren't typically something you have to worry about being waterborne currently. I bought this to mainly mess around with to gain experience in that sort of thing. Plan on taking it hiking, etc. Also, will be nice not to have to worry about carrying so much water if I am planning around being near water to begin with. All my research shows that Katadyn is built very nice. Yes, the ceramic filter inside is breakable but it should generally hold up for a very long time if you take care of it. You can go cheap on something like this, Katadyn even makes a "Hiker" that is I think $60. The catch? It is only rated for I think 200 gallons. You can buy replacement ceramic catridges for the Katadyn Pocket for about $150. $150 per 13,000 gallons is about a penny per gallon. You can buy optional activated charcoal filter attatchments that are good for around 200 or so gallons. They would be good for filtering taste/chemicals from the water. I may buy one for hiking but wouldn't plan on long term using them. That brings up one thing I'd like to discuss here; without having activated charcoal, you pretty much leave whatever chemicals that exist in the water in the water. Now, hopefully in back country mountain streams this won't be an issue, but I am interested in seeing what others have thought about. Eventually I'd like to tie some rain barrels together for catching rainwater for gardening and stuff. They would also serve as a backup water source for times such as what happened in Toledo last year. When chemicals in water become a concern, what are your thoughts in dealing with them? Activated charcoal in mass quanties? Distilling the water? Avoid the contamination and seek elsewhere? Something else?

  24. My stock 10-22 fires every time and has never jammed.  It also hits what I point it at.  How can you improve on that?   I never understood people's urge to modify things, whether its a truck, a gun  or a dishwasher.  The overall plan seems to be "fiddle with it until it's broke, then unload it on a friend and buy another to fiddle with".  :D

  25. My point was that a lot of the people shouting about how the police are 'unfairly' profiling them are the same people who are rampantly committing crimes in the riots. There is a certain amount of irony to people committing crimes to 'protest' the idea that police are (supposedly unfairly) 'profiling' them as people who commit crimes. They are basically just proving that the cops are right.

  26. Once again, it was many moons ago, but I've been all in the cave under one of the falls. There were large pools inside the cave. Very deep and dark. Of course I dove right in. I remember a large boulder under one falling stream of water. Bravery overriding good sense, I climbed it and stood under the falling water. It knocked me off balance and I fell off. Busted my ass pretty good. Knees and elbows bloody. The laughter hurt worse.

  27. Looks good! As far as the worn spots, I like that too. I don't think a camo job looks perfect until it ain't. The worn places give it a finishing touch. I just ordered two colors of Alumahyde II from Brownells. The rifle being black already, I'm going for a three color job.

  28.       I think there is a marked difference between committing and convicted when we talk about crimes, with targeting minorities leading to the large discrepancy in the latter.  With all the laws on the books, a heavy enough police presence could turn white suburbia into a heavy crime zone given enough time and a robust enough DA office willing to prosecute.  The "war on drugs" related crimes/convictions are bringing in a lot of the statistics here.  In my mind, it's time for a hard look at those laws...but that's  side subject, probably.   I also never said that the rioting was a form of protesting.  I would like to think I'm clear enough on only supporting protesting against the government and the actions of the police, not random looting and destruction in the community.  I think blocking streets, defying a curfew, disobeying orders to disperse, etc..are legitimate methods of protest, but destroying whatever business you run across is not.

  29.   Well, I'd say it is profitable for the Republicans, too, in some ways.  It is profitable for all politicians and other folks who wield power 'behind the scenes' as it keeps the masses occupied and divided to the point that most folks don't look up and realize, "Hey, it isn't my neighbor whose actions are oppressing me - it's Obama/Clinton/Bush/Haslam, etc."

  30. This is the info I needed, thanks! I guess it is just my luck, but when I was in autozone trying the fob, I was pushing all the buttons and got nothing out of the lock/unlock buttons, but as soon as I hit the red horn beeping emergency button that one worked like a champ. I ordered a new one on Amazon today. Thanks for the suggestions.

  34. A magazine I got from my Dad had an article about a bear's sense of smell.  The comment was something to this effect...   You can smell the beans cooking over the camp fire from 100 yds away.  Your dog can smell them while they're still in the can.  A bear can smell the perfume worn by the lady who packed them in the can 6 months ago, from a mile away.

  38. still hard to find any here.  sometimes sportsman's and academy sports has it.  but they have a low box rate.  stopped at one of my local wal marts and asked the manager for some.  the manager stated they got some yesterday.  it is all ways yesterday at wal mart.  the manager stated the same guys were lined up before 7am to buy it.   they get the heads up from the wal mart app.   the manager stated some get to the store at 5 am to wait at the gun counter for the ammo to be put out at 7 am.  one day it will level out and the stores will be full.  I hope the same old guys lose their butts and will have to eat all the 22 lr ammo they got for resale when the supply and prices come back to normal.

  48. I hear a lot of "nobody notices open carry", "you could carry a howitzer and most wouldn't notice", etc. I think most of those folks are actually "almost" carrying concealed, with service size heater or smaller tight to side with at least a shirt covering half of it or more.   Carrying a gat completely open with tucked in shirt and no jacket or whatever is going to be noticed, simple as that. I know because I've done it, and have gotten that attention. By what overall percentage depending on size of the thing and whatnot is debatable, but doesn't matter to me if it's only 1 in 20, I simply don't want the attention.   I also hear the "it's so much more comfortable" and "most expedient way to deploy" claims, and there's a lot of truth in that -- however, whether you mean it as such or not, a completely exposed roscoe is also an attention getting statement. And gawd knows based on the appearance of some folks I see doing it, not one that conveys a positive image to the average John Q in any way, either. (I'll include myself in that category at times, btw).   All that being said, of course I support your right to do it. But I'll stay in gray man mode myself, for a variety of reasons.   - OS
