  1. One of the guys I made good friends with training last year decided he wanted an axe similar to one carried on the show Vikings. So this is what u came up with. This was my first day off in 3 weeks and I worked 5:00 pm to 5:00 am, then drove straight from work to the shop and forged this out. Mild steel body with a forge welded 5160 bit. Apps 4 lbs. 9.5" Long point to point, 29" handle Forge welded eye Hot cutting the leaf spring for the bit. The finished product and one tired blacksmith. I call her the Gavel of Ragnarök since that will be the judgment of the Gods.

  2. My children will be relieved when they read this.            The Explanation            Brains of older people are slow because they know so much.  People do not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains, scientists believe.  Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full, so, too, do humans take longer to access information when their brains are full.            Researchers say this slowing down process is not the same as cognitive decline.   The human brain works slower in old age, said Dr. Michael Ramscar, but only because we have stored more information over time. The brains of older people do not get weak. On the contrary, they simply know more.            Also, older people often go to another room to get something and when they get there, they stand there wondering what they came for.  It is NOT a memory problem, it is nature's way of making older people do more exercise.     SO THERE!!            I have more friends I should send this to, but right now I can't remember their names.   So, please forward this to your friends; they may be my friends, too.

  3. I sure do enjoy every frustration they have to endure. The war on guns really sucks. But watching them lose is kinda fun.

  4. This has been in the works for 2 years now. I bought all the parts & it was put together by a really good friend of mine in Florida, Shane Thomas. It's based (loosely) on a 1740s style French Fusil de Chasse. Usually a smoothbore gun, I had this built as a .62 caliber rifle. The barrel was special ordered from Colerain with a 1:60 twist & round bottom rifling. The maple for the stock was ordered as 'plain' Yeah...you can see how that turned out! I had the barrel mounted with a hooked beach & wedges, rather than the correct pins, because I actually use my guns & I wanted the ease of cleaning that an easily removable barrel allows. I've only shot a couple of light loads (80gn FFg) so far & it shoots as well as it looks! I'm off to the range tomorrow to start working on a load & adjust (file) the sights as required!

  7. The pistol grip shotguns, at least in 12 gauge, are hard to control after the 1st shot.  I get followup shots off much quicker with a full stock.  #4 Buck is good, and I've read that #1 is better for penetration, but it's harder to find.   I'm only gonna clear the room I'm in.  The cops can do the rest.

  9. I wasn't trying to go cheap, but at the price, I couldn't pass it up. Finished the assembly tonight. Anderson lower, $63 OTD from Buds. PSA rifle build kit from Easter, PTAC upper, 16" midlength gas system, 1/9 twist. PSA Freedom lower build kit. $387 delivered. I haven't decided what to do about sights/optics.

  10. Not sure if this is the right place to put this thread but was just curious what everybody uses for targets. Whenever I shoot I'm with at least one of my kids and I try and make it interesting and challenging. Our latest idea involves soda cans. We tie some string between to tree limbs and then use the tabs on the cans to hold them in place. Like so..... We'll also do some excercises where we'll call out a brand to hit and the shooter has to identify the right can and aim quickly. With teenagers in the house, soda cans are plentiful and the hits are easily seen. Although it's difficult to adjust your aim since misses aren't visible. Anyway, we enjoy it and I was wondering if anyone else had creative target ideas as well. Steve

  13. What an Honor   I have the distinguished honor of being on the Committee to raise $50,000,000 for a monument to Hillary R. Clinton.   We originally wanted to put her on Mt. Rushmore until we discovered there was not enough room for two more faces.   We then decided to erect a statue of Hillary in the Washington , D.C. Hall of Fame. We were in a quandary as to where the statue should be placed. It was not proper to place it beside the statue of George Washington, who never told a lie, or beside her husband William J. Clinton, who never told the truth, since Hillary could never tell the difference.   We finally decided to place it beside Christopher Columbus, the greatest Democrat of them all. He left not knowing where he was going, and when he got there he did not know where he was. He returned not knowing where he had been and did it all on someone else's money.   Thank you, Hillary R. Clinton Monument Committee   P.S. The Committee has raised $2.16 so far.   Out of date stamps are acceptable.  Bus tokens are not.  Food Stamps .....maybe.  Mexican passports are valued at $.05.

  15. Modern autoloading rifles are much, much better for this sort of thing, but if you insist on the shotgun (or it's all you have, I've been there), please:   Forget about the pistol-grip only guns.  Hits stop fights, and at the kind of range you can reliably git hits with a PGO gun, you'd be better off with a bayonet.  Seriously.  At anything past bad-breath range, PGO shotguns suck.   Don't use any shot smaller than #1 buck.  Anything smaller CANNOT reliably be counted on to penetrate flesh deeply enough to incapacitate the human attacker.  If it won't penetrate drywall, how is supposed to keep someone from killing you?   Commit to serious training.  The shotgun, especially the pump shotgun is THE HARDEST SMALL ARM WITH WHICH TO LEARN HOW TO EFFECTIVELY FIGHT.  Buy cheap birdshot by the case and practice loading, shooting, and loading more.  The shotgun starts every fight low on ammo, if you aren't actively engaging targets you should be stuffing shells in.  Buy/make dummy shells and practice loading some more.    As for which gun... try some and see what you like.  The Benelli Nova and 870 are my pumpguns of choice.  The offerings from Mossberg, Winchester, probably others are just as good... there's a lot of personal preference involved.  Same with pistol grip shoulder stocks.  I always recommend the shortest LOP stock you can find... shotgun stocks are almost always too long.  If you need extra length, ad a recoil pad like the Limbsaver.

  17. I did the same thing. I had a Ruger SR1911, but after firing BigK's 97 I was sold. I love Rugers but I had it sold off and bought a 97BD just a few months later. The felt recoil is much less and I was a lot more accurate with it. I am also a huge fan of the deckocker. All of my CZ's are decockers with the exceptions of my 82 and Shadow which unfortunately is only available with a safety. I REALLY want a stainless CZ but they don't come in a decocker model so I'll have to wait. I asked them about that at the NRA convention and their reply was that they had too many models already.

  32. So, last year, legislature enacted the staggered times on the HCP issuance and renewals, to get them to start falling in line with the five year birthday renewal of one's TN DL. And probably there was a fiscal note on this for admin and software and whatnot. I'm sure it was also touted to save money in the long run.   Okay.   So now, they just passed the new eight year new cycle on TDL renewals. Same deal, claiming 6 million in savings over time.   Only in Tennessee.   At least we can legally eat our roadkill, always been proud of our lawmakers' wisdom and all with that.   - OS

  34. My biggest concerns are the actual engraving. First, engraving plastic is a bit shifty. Second, I wanna say I've heard the ATF wants the engraving done on metal....but I can't substantiate that. I only paid $50 for the lower, Brand New. I care very little about it. I might get a sixer in my liver one afternoon and break out the wood burning kit. If it turns out nice, register it. If not, put it back where it is now, a back up...just in case.

  35. Well, I do have to ask; how is it they got in the house in the first place? While no one could ever plan for every contingent, forethought now will give you those seconds to put them on. I have no doubts a determined thug could get into my house. He's gonna have to make a LOT of racket to do it. Not to mention getting past an 80lb pit and doing it all without disturbing my wife's chihuahua. That little girl can hear a gnat farting in the neighbors basement.

  36. We load extensively and hunt hogs with our rifles.  I load Benchmark / 60 VMax for everything.   A couple of things that I have found .......   Unless you've loaded up on the Wolf primers, drop them and go to CCI BR4 primers.  Way better consistency and a little tougher cup.   You likely will find your best accuracy somewhere below max published data.  Not always, but usually.   Like someone already said ...... loading a .223 for max velocity is wasting powder and stressing components.  No need.   We shoot hogs and kill them quickly with a load that runs roughly 2850.  We shoot them in the ear at ranges from 50 to 200 yards.  Accuracy is of extreme importance to us ... velocity not so much.   Lastly, for pure shooting pleasure and economy (as well as accuracy!) find a load that isn't tipping the max.  You'll be far better off in the long run.

  37. The holes for the gas tube have nothing to do with the tube. The tube screws onto the nut. There is nothing wrong with the tube itself. You tighten the barrel nut until the gas tube hole lines THEN you screw the tube onto the nut and align it before tightening the locking ring. This happens all the time. The way I fix it is make sure the receiver is secure then barely tighten the nut with the tube slightly leaning to the ejection port side. Then either grab the tube, use s strap wrench or a vertical grip and twist the tube the right direction the last little bit. Matter of fact I do not use wrenches on that style of tube at all. The wrenches don't grab well enough.

  38. Because, as I stated earlier, the 2nd Amendment is NOT about serving in a militia, it's about defending AGAINST a state-run militia. Again, the 2nd Amendment does NOT mean that the right to keep and bear arms is reserved for the militia. It does not say it. It does not imply it. That is an invention of gun-grabbers like Brady and VPC. It clearly states that "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." It does not say the right of the militia. There is a reason it is worded that way.

Makes you think...especially about "not so obvious" agenda's.   I've loaned this book to a couple of friends and got the same response: "This could actually happen!"     I per-ordered the sequel to "One Second After" by Forstchen..."One Year After". 45.   Forgot I promised some comments on this one.   Well...it is every bit as dark and pessimistic as One Second After. Really so.   Takes the leap that Muslim/Al Queada/Terrorists will hit America where it hurts. And it goes pretty deep into the ability of the terrorists to do as they wish without fear of losing.   Very depressing. And darn it...equally plausible.

  46. FWIW I had a lot of people flip me the bird during my police career...every one of them did so when I was directing traffic, conducting a vehicle stop, working an auto crash or they thought I wasn't watching. that pretty much put told to the caliber of person(s) flipping me off. if you want to be that guy and flip off a police officer then that's on you but I'm going to point something out to you. Does doing so make you a better person? I've arrested people for disorderly conduct and everyone was convicted in a court of law...none of them were for flipping me the bird and every, repeat every one of them were warned to cease and desists or be arrested. As a judge pointed out to one of them "son you were warned if you did a he was going to do b...you didn't listen to him and now your here for me to do c...
