  1. Back in 2009 may home was broken into and three pistols stolen, a Glock 34, Glock 27 and a Walther P22. Of course I had the police investigate and supplied then the serial numbers of the three pistols. I have several copies, both paper and electronic, of all the firearms with serial numbers I own.    The Glock 34 was recovered in Chicago in 2010. After the convicted felon that possessed it pleaded out, the police there shipped it to Knoxville police and they returned it to me.   I got a call Saturday from an officer with  the Kingsport Police Department asking about the Walther P22 I reported stolen in 2009.  Here is what the officer told me. They had a gun show in Kingsport recently and Craig's Firearms had a table there with my Walther on it for sale. A guy wanted to buy it and it came up as stolen when the background check was ran. This was reported to the police and they confiscated the gun. He needed to confirm my birthdate and address to complete his report. I asked him how a gun shop could have a gun without knowing it was stolen. He didn't know.   He gave me the name and number of the guy in the property division to make arrangements to pick up the gun from.  I'll call later today and get the details.    Maybe I'll get the Glock 27 back too at some point.

  2. I'm somewhat amazed how these parents who couldn't be bothered to raise or discipline their children all of a sudden become super parents immediately following the untimely death of the same children. If they had put about 1/4 the effort into raising their child as they put into all the publicity and T shirts and banners, etc. after his death, he would probably be around today. Or at least there is that possibility.

  3. Timthetoolman came out to hunt today because I figured the deer would move ahead of this front. I've had one of the bucks that I posted earlier in the thread coming through a food plot at about 4:30 each evening so I dropped him off there. A shot rang out at almost 4:30 on the dot followed by a text that he got him.

  4. I traded for this awesome knife a few weeks ago (thank you again, Gran Torino). I wanted to try and do it justice with an equally cool sheath. So, I prowled around Google images and found something I liked and copied it. Due to the size of the knife and the shape of the blade, I picked something designed for scout carry. I put shock cord on the retention strap, so the strap swings away when drawn from behind my back. I used 15-17 oz leather on the sheath and the harness and 5-6 oz leather on the pouch. The sheath without the harness is almost 3/4" thick, so it's quite monstrous, which I kind of like. No clue what I'll keep in the pouch, but that big space between the straps were begging for one to be added, so I obliged. This is my first crack at making a knife sheath. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, but I wish I'd taken more time on my edge work. Anyway, I'd love to hear what y'all think, good or bad. Comments, suggestions, and gripes are more than welcome. It may help me do better next time.

  8. Man, there are a lot of reasons to do an 80% lower.  I built a 10/22 from the ground up with an 80% receiver a couple of years ago and it was well worthwhile for several reasons:   1. The quality of a billet receiver is far better than the cast factory model (this applies to the 10/22 not necessarily the AR15 platform) 2. You gain an intricate appreciation for what it takes to put together a quality firearm - and I'd argue you learn a lot more about the platform than you would on a regular build 3. Because a clean receiver with no markings is nice looking 4. Because you can 5. Because sometimes things are worth doing by hand - at least once   I recognize that all of the above reasons may not mean anything to someone who looks at the value proposition of doing one themselves and then thinks, "a stripped lower costs about the same."  We're in a time where our economy has become dependent upon people thinking that everything is disposable and anything can be had at the click of a mouse with free 2-day shipping as a bonus.    Some things are just worth doing.

  9. Well, the loss of a son is a tragic situation period. They lost their son because he was shot. I lost my son because he lost control of his car on a gravel road and struck a huge Oak Tree on the shoulder of the road. Now thing is that Oak tree is the only big tree on the shoulder of that road for about a mile in either direction. Every thing else was saplings. When I got up the courage I drove down that road and the paint from my sons car was still embedded in that mighty Oak. I looked at that tree and pull a Chainsaw out of the bed of my truck and I was going to not let anyone else die because of that tree.   That mighty Oak still stands proud and strong and my younger son drives past it every day on his way to work and back home. I told him I thought about cutting that big Oak down once and he got a little smile on his face and said "you too huh?" He asked me why I didn't cut it down and I said because it was not the reason Doug Jr was dead. Fate played the biggest role in his accident from what a few witnesses said that heard the wreck happen. It would not be fair to blame that big beautiful Oak tree for my sons death, but it would have been easy enough to do. Instead their is a Marker on the tree and when it gets old and weathered a new one gets put up. Anyone that lived in Kingston Springs back them knows what the marker is for and those who don't probably wonder when they see it.   I just wish Michael Browns parents could see the 1 tree, the pillar of light that was once their son in a forest that surrounds them right now. Anger and contempt for the loss of their son is not going to bring their son back. They should celebrate their time they had with him. The longer they keep dragging this out the worse it will look for Michael and them. If the people riot and more people are hurt or killed that is on them and their son only because they cannot accept what is and move on to make this terrible situation better. They probably are not even aware that an entire community's future rests on every decision they make. All I can say is I hope they don't cut the oak tree down....................jmho

  10. I don’t feel empathy for them; they raised the thug. I doubt him robbing a store was a big surprise for them. Asking the U.N. for help is laughable; they have zero control over us. But okay, let them go there. But make sure you show them the video of your thug azz son robbing and assaulting the store owner so they can roll their eyes and kick you out of the U.N. I feel very sorry for the Officer involved; it’s terrible that he has to go through this because the thug he killed was black. Our President sending the Attorney General there to tell stories about how white cops harassed him as a young man is nothing but racist. I hope this cop is cleared and he finds a job as a Policer Officer in a place where they will support him when he does his job.

  11. Gun rights have been gaining ground since the Heller decision from the SCOTUS, next on to the decision to basically make Illinois a shall issue State to today's decision on counties in California requiring residents to show a reason to carry a gun? What a change from two years ago .

  19. Jig only cost me the time I spent making it and some scrap, and mine is MUCH simpler than some commercially marketed with intent to make machining a lower with a hand drill or drill press easier. I technically don't need a jig with the mill, but it simplifies repeat setup (especially depth) of a few of the steps with my mill which helps consistency.    If I was a better machinist and had more free time I'd just start with a block of aluminum and the mill.    I don't reload, machine, or build my own rifles to save any money but when one hobby can help save a little here or there on another hobby it gives me something to tell the wife I "saved money" on.  :pleased: (I need all the help I can get)   I also occasionally wear costumes around to raise money for children's charities and someone in that group questioned my 3d printing of a component for one of my costumes stating "It's only $20 to buy one" So what, I spent around $2 in ABS printing it with machine I've already got and had fun doing it.

  21. It would be fun to see a primitive season consisting of non-compounding bows and atlatls.   Kinda seems like the point of primitive hunting gets lost after you add crossbows, inline muzzle loaders  with scopes, & single shot rifles. Might as well just make it all rifle season.

  25. Given the impetus driving that market was the fear that BHO was going to ban and/or regulate the heck out of firearms and ammo ... Do you believe that as a result of the recent elections, that fear has gone away and these speculators are now sitting on hundreds of thousands of rounds that are now worth MSRP? Please let it be so! The only way to sustain that market is to buy everything in sight ... I don't see this happening. Comments?

  26.   Yeah, it's a cool idea. I haven't been able to find out its natural length though. Meaning, if you have to offset the brace past end of tube just to get same minimum LOP as KAK tube or what.   For example, the Phase 5 Hex tube is shorter than the KAK, but it's designed to offset the tube from the gitgo to get about same length as non-offset KAK. But the KAK with the spacers allows you increase even that securely.   Also note that if using the SBX brace, no forward retention is necessary on any tube, assuming the tube is long enough to suit you without offsetting it.   - OS

  42. Ok, I went and did a little research to see if I could find out if and what the penalty would be for injuring or killing a Police K-9. I found a lot more information with much of it pertaining to how each states handled the issue. There was a couple that stood out and links are listed below.  The two that got my attention the most was the first two. #1 is pertaining to Federal K-9 dogs and it was passed last year making it a Federal felony.  #2 Tells about a made in S.C. Getting 35 years for all the crimes but the judge in the case did add a 5 year addition to the mans sentence for killing the K-9. In this article pay close attention to how the police force felt and the death of this dog. It said some Police even came to tears in the trial.  My point here is they were hurt because one of their dogs had been killed. Does that make the lost any more special than it would be if it was your best friend killed for no reason by a police officer. I'm sure that those officers were hurt. I would be to if I was an officer and knew the dog. But what they have been doing recently should not be justified either.............jmho.   #1            http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=96229   #2           http://www.thestate.com/2014/01/06/3192806/man-accused-of-killing-police.html

  47. What I find most interesting about the .22 "thing" is how some people act when they get within spitting distance of bulk ammo at big box retail prices. Almost like heroin addicts, with no regard for anyone but themselves.  Go fishing, shoot an arrow, get a pellet gun, get a shotgun or another hobby until this thing settles out.       What peeves me a might is that every time I look for reloading stuff for my .22 Hornet I find, "out of stock, no back order."  Good thing I have some friends who had stuff prior to the foolishness.   I still haven't picked up a decent pellet rifle, which would just about put any .22LR angst I have to bed.  I am spending my firearm hobby money on another non firearm hobby until the dust settles.  This is what the firearm industry should be afraid of, people getting turned off and meandering off to other pursuits.  Little regard for demand seems an odd way of looking out for the future of the industry.  Maybe all other facets of the industry are still going full out bringing in all sorts of cash, enough to say, "the heck with .22s."  Can anyone honestly suggest to someone that buying a .22 firearm at this time is a smart move?  Seems to me that a pellet rifle and a 5.56, along with centerfire pistols and maybe a pistol caliber carbine make a lot more sense.
