This wasn't just a case of someone walking up and shoving 'something' in someone else's side. This was a case where the victim saw the van that the assailant got out of driving around in a circle a couple of times. On the second time around, he saw three people (apparently, the would-be assailant and two of his buddies) get out of the van. At least one of them - the would-be assailant - then walked up to him and shoved something in his side. Put all of that together and I believe that the intended victim could, indeed, articulate a reasonable belief that his life was in danger. If I am standing in a public place, minding my own business and a vehicle circles past me a couple of times, three guys I don't know get out and one of them walks up to me and shoves something in my side, I don't think I'd give them a chance to take any, further action before acting in self defense. It isn't like this guy just bumped into him walking down the street or even like the intended victim just suddenly felt something shoved into his side out of nowhere. The back story - the circling van, the three guys getting out, one of them walking up and then shoving something into his side - is important.3 points

My defense of Z during the Trayvon mess wasn't personal. I figured he was an idiot from the beginning. If he's guilty this time, let him fry. It helps that Obama hasn't declared him guilty this time. Speaking of prison... That's where I would like to see Barry too. In a cell with a big old hairy, thick knuckled redneck that's as gay as Little Richard.2 points

Well, it is a Colt but still from a questionable time period for Colt. The 1911 platform was not really designed for the high pressure of 10mm, many will not own a 1911 10mm for that reason. Who knows how any rounds will break it, if it is possible. There is some collector value to a few if perfect. A far as it being a shooter, IMO it is not.2 points

if you have a garden or will be planting a fruit tree, bury it. You will be amazed. Skin/hair/blood/intestine....those are super-concentrate, slow-releasing food/nutrient for plants/trees. Ever heard of blood meal/hair for fertilizer? Garden...bury it at least under 2' of soil if the flies are still buzzing, (1' if it is after 3 freeze spells). Put wood chips on top of the carcass/intestine. Cover with soil, then top it off with leaves or chips. Put cinder blocks on top of it for a few weeks so that dogs or other vermin will not dig it back up. Future tree pit: dig deeper and wider; put chips on top of it. Ditto. Next year, when you re-dig the hole, stop when you see chip or smell the decomposing pile. Make sure the hole is deep enough for the size of the tree you will be planting the next season. If you don't want coyote harassing your deer, then why feed it. Make them work for their keep. If the flies are still out, leaving a gut piles make life harder for the rest of us.2 points

I'm with most folks here. Keep your hands, fingers and objects off me. I know the difference between being poked by someone in a playful manner and someone intent on doing me harm. If you don't want shot or have your skull cracked with a hammer blow from a 1911, don't walk up on me and run something into my ribs or stomach! Lee Harvey Oswald was poked in the ribs too, and Jack Ruby wasn't playing! Awareness my friends. Know who is around you at all times. Dave2 points

Very good discussion. I mirror prag's journey; thought I knew what I was doing and could shoot a pistol. As said, you don't know what you don't know. I have invested quite a bit in over 200 hrs of training with a number of different instructors. It is important to realize that one must master basic shooting skills as well as safe gun handling skills before moving on to more advanced tactical maneuvers. Suarez and Cruel Hand Luke have several levels of programs to do just that. Too many people think the HCP course is a suitable training course and they are sadly mistaken. Tactical Advantage Corp. in Knoxville is now offering multiple level courses at very reasonable prices. I would hope that anyone who is willing to assume the responsibility of every day carry would understand the need for additional training and discover some of what they don't know. There is a whole lot more to it than simply strapping a gun on because you have a permit.2 points

Not all training is "fantasy camp"....While there are some "tactical dude ranch experiences" out there that does not mean ALL training is that. Some folks teach civilian training classes based on the NRA safety class with a sprinkling of legal info (which is essentially what the TN HCP class is) , some teach based on IDPA match prep with some awareness and legal info added, some try to teach from a police or military perspective and try to bend that to fit civilian encounters and then finally there are some who actually know the difference and teach from the perspective of the criminal assault paradigm. They teach what the typical criminal assaults will most likely look like , teach you to avoid it if possible and then provide concepts and solutions for the likely situations, not just teach you shooting techniques with no clear vision of WHAT you are actually training for and expect you to figure it out in the heat of the moment...... So just like there being good lawyers , doctors or mechanics and there also being bad lawyers, doctors, or mechanics, there are people in the training industry that can speak with authority on all subjects from human reaction time, to effects of adrenaline on your motor skills to recognizing the cues of an assault about to happen, to how to shoot more efficiently and effectively to how integrate hand to hand skills with use of the gun, to treat a gunshot wound to how to talk to the police afterward....and then there are those who can do little more than follow a syllabus someone else wrote.....not ALL training is the same.2 points

I appreciate your viewpoint Smith, and my response is in no way a flame and is respectfully submitted. On instructors: It is our obligation to choose wisely. I agree that some classes are indeed just fantasy gun camps with an over abundance of Walter Mitty types. And some instructors simply don't possess the background, or teaching abilities they may profess. I have been fortunate that the majority of training venues I've attended contained serious adults with realistic goals and expectations, taught by competent and gifted professionals. But I did the footwork first... The greatest value I personally gleaned from professional training was the realization that "I didn't know what I didn't know". So for me it is an ongoing venture from "unconscious incompetence" towards "conscious competence" and maybe, just maybe, one day "unconscious competence". It's merely a personal goal. We are extremely fortunate in this day and age to have many learning opportunities available to us. There were only a few "schools" when I started this journey. To repeat myself (I getting old and old people do that sometimes...)...It's our responsibility to choose wisely where we spend our hard earned dollars. But investing in yourself is never a bad idea, imho. We are also pretty darned fortunate to have some talented professionals as frequent contributors here at TGO. :2cents:2 points

It is true that nobody has a right to fly. Whether or not a person flies on an airplane is decided by a transaction of commerce between two private entities. What people in this country do have, is a right to travel freely without being forced to submit to a sexual assault perpetrated by government agents simply on the basis of choosing to fly as a mode of travel. Nobody has the right to travel by car either but if they do, they don't automatically consent to a cavity search by police unless they have provided RAS that they are involved in criminal activity(well, except for New Mexico that is). That is the point where the rights violations come ino play. According to the TSA choosing to fly means that you are automatically a suspect of criminal activity and therefore may be searched like an inmate being inproccessed into jail.2 points

It isn't like January 1st your XP machine will not turn on. If it has been running reliably then I would not worry too much about it. I ran a 98 machine for about 5 years after they quit supporting it.1 point

I and I believe most of us who "defended" Zimmerman in the Martin shooting did so for two primary reasons. 1) was that it was evident very early on that him being charged at all was predicated on race-baiting politics and a shopped-for DA rather than evidence that the shooting was anything other than what it was; self-defense (and the information that has come out since the trial form folks such as the original investigating officers, etc. has shown that to be exactly the case) 2) The other reason was that the evidence that was known before the trial suggested to me that he simply was not guilty and the evidence presented during the trial removed any doubts I may have had beforehand. However, claims to the contrary not withstanding, to the best of my recollection, neither I or anyone else on TGO who believed he was being railroaded then ever tried to confer sainthood on him or make him a poster boy for responsible firearm use. We just believed that the charges were bogus and that he was not guilty; positions that I would suggest were the right positions based on the facts and the verdict. With regards to these current charges, that's pretty much all we have...charges. Maybe I'm weird with but I don't put a lot of stock in "charges" and I'm not going to support or crucify anyone just because he/she got charged with something. If a lot of evidence comes out with this latest case that shows his guilt or innocence then I would support or condemn him based on that evidence. What I will not do is try to crucify the man based on charges alone as some here seem more than willing to do. Bottom line is, there is nothing to "join in" on except for those who just want to pile on Zimmerman and/or who want to pontificate about the "facts" of a case they actually know nothing about.1 point

True. Speaking of bloated registries... download and install ccleaner https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download It'll clean up your registry which will speed things up a bit as well, particularly the slow start-ups. ' As for the MSSE full scan, I just let it run over-night.1 point

Yeah... no kidding. Dude, you seriously need to step back for a couple of minutes and take a look in the mirror. Do you realize how incoherent your argument is here? You say I have intentionally misinterpreted your post and criticize me for it while you intentionally misrepresent my post as evidence that I was intentionally misrepresenting your post? Wow.... Pot, meet Kettle. Still waiting on that evidence of my "regular" practice of this. I'm holding my breath... :lol:1 point

Thanks guys, for all the Hornet information. I checked "new brass" and it seems to be running about 31 cents a round! I bought a pound of Lil' Gun, and figured I'd start with that. I think my 10" .22 Hornet Contender barrel is 1:12 twist. Also, I thought I'd start with small pistol primers, as I heard that they are a little more gentle on the brass. I'll have to figure out a "paper bullet" and a "hunting bullet" in weight and design. Most of the loaded ammo that I've bought has been semi jacketed soft point in 45 grains. Should get my dies by Wednesday...let the fun begin!1 point

I saw this on Facebook and it rings awful true, To My Liberal Friends--if I have any: Please accept with no obligation, implied or explicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2014 but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere . Also, this wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishes. To My Conservative Friends: Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Sorry it's showing up in light gray but it's late and i'm far to lazy at this hour to type it all out so this light gray copy and paste will have to do, Luke1 point

Thank you jaredsterry. Good post...and welcome as well. imho, training, professional training, and incorporating the information from that training into regular practice is one of the most necessary, but neglected aspects of firearms ownership. I'm not meaning to be disrespectful to anyone...as Robert pointed out, there are folks that collect or amass firearms, and folks that own firearms with the purpose of self defense in mind. Nothing wrong with either group. Investing in professional instruction is investing in yourself. To me that is the best possible investment that can be made. That said, your training must be recent, relevant, and realistic...I am remiss in this and hope to improve upon myself in the coming year. Thanks again for the thoughtful post.1 point

Some stranger/thug shoves an object into my side, i'm not going to take the time and ask him if it's a leathal object or not, i'm automatically assuming it's a weapon he's trying to harm or kill me with and i'll do whatever I can to stop him even if that includes shooting and killing him. It will be the attackers fault 100%, he will have asked for it and will get what he deserves and society will be rid of one POS thug.1 point

At the time the guy did I not know what it was , all I'm saying is if you get pushed in the stomach or side , protect yourself ; if it's a stun gun then kill the attacker , if you have no idea what touched your side then decide what to do. There seems to be a movement here that if someone touches you or pokes you that you can kill them , not true.. you better start reading some law about that gun you carry.1 point

I've had my SR45 about... a month now? I think. First time I fired it, I put all rounds well inside a 3" circle at 25 feet. Never done that with ANY .45. It was so soft, it felt like a 9mm. I love it, and have had it on my hip every day since. Loved it so much, I took possession of an SR9 yesterday. Took it out of the box, cleaned it, and went back to the range to try it. My goodness, what a great, accurate, easy to shoot handgun! It feels great in my hand. Ruger has made a believer out of me. I also like the idea of having a real American made gun in my hand. Gives me an extra feeling of pride...1 point

Good thing I don't have kids. This is just another reason I refuse to have em. Rules or no rules, those are HIS kids. If he wants em, he should have them. He shoulda ripped that fat ass rednecks throat out. Never come In between people and their children. I'm a cop lover and take up for them time and time again. We also don't need another stupid cop bashing thread but this resource officer needs his ass stomped. Not reprimanded...physical bludgeoning. I hope the guy wins a lawsuit large enough to put his kids through 4 years of Vanderbilt; room board books and tuition.1 point

I throw mine off in a wooded holler behind the house. Once my dog is able to get the bones separated, he usually drags it back into the yard, one piece at a time. I assume you are in town and can't do this, so I would suggest double bagging the remains and setting out with your household garbage.1 point
