  3. I was having a beer or 3 tonight and thought I'd share this. Doesn't have a great ending or anything but here goes........       I had to go recliner shopping this evening. My old friend of the past 6 years went to the 'man cave in the sky' earlier today. As I was trying out a suitable replacement an older couple walked by followed by what I guessed was their son. I flopped the footrest down and we exchanged a hello as they walked by.   Now I'm deep in thought about making such an important purchase. This recliner isn't about me, it's about the dog. Is there enough room for him to lay beside me without me having to sit on the opposite arm of the chair so I'm not touching him? Will he have enough of a landing pad when he jumps from 10 feet away running at 100 mph? Is the footrest big enough for him to lay sideways on his back exposing his kibbles and bits for the world to see? Still I manage to notice something.   The son is wearing scrubs and semi pocket carrying a revolver, a big revolver. How do you semi pocket carry you ask?? You grip the big ass gun and stick most of it in your pocket. Next you leave the grip exposed above your pocket. How does the gun not just fall in or out of your pocket? You never take your hand off the grip is how!! I'm watching this guy walking around with a partially exposed gun in his hand.   I'm not gonna lie, when I first saw this it was hard to keep my hand from finding it's way under my shirt and on to the grip of my Kimber. So I stand there for a minute looking at this guy. When his Dad asked him something it was "yes sir". He's helping his mom by holding her purse while she fondles something. He's holding the purse with his left hand, right hand never comes off the grip. He sets the purse down and helps her sit on a chair she likes. Again, never lets go of what looks like a big S&W. Dad asked him another question, "yes sir". I'm thinking...seems like a nice guy but what the hell. So I ask.   Me: What ya got in your pocket? Him: Ahhh...S&W revolver. Me: Looks kinda big. Him: Yeah, a 629. Left my carry gun home. This is my truck gun. Me: Nice. Why you carrying it like that? Him: Didn't have a holster with me. Me: Guess you don't have enough pocket for it. Him: Pocket has a hole in it. Me: What?? Him: My pocket has a hole in it. Me: LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL Him: No, really. There's a hole in my pocket and that's why I'm holding on to it.   I've absolutely lost it laughing at this point because he's serious as hell. There was so much more I wanted to say to him but he walked off as the guy from the warehouse walked up and said my recliner was up front waiting for me.   Here's the best part. I'm sure I was the only person that noticed. There was at least 20 people walking around and no one paid any attention. Too busy doing their own thing. And I worry about printing sometimes.   The story doesn't have a happy ending. The dog won't get near the new recliner. Pretty sure it's going back tomorrow.

They can't help themselves though, it's in their grubby little hearts. They can't control an armed population the way they want so they'll always come back to it.

  13. I've got a simple principal I like to follow in these situations. It's not my job/responsibility/duty to make sure every person knows exact value for an item they are selling. Now I won't try to BS or talk down a seller to a price that is under value. In fact I'll even tell them that with time and effort they could likely get more, but I'm paying cash today, no effort. In my experience most people who won't even take the time to find a value for their items don't like the sound of time and effort. They'll take the easy cash. I say as long as you weren't being flat out dishonest you've got no issues grabbing some desirable pieces at a fantastic price. IMHO.

Screw em. Weak animals make meals for the strong. I'll be glad when we as a people stop sheltering this thing and put it down so we can restart/rebuild and get back to some semblance of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. There will never be happiness with the current regime who take STEAL from me because I decided I need to work for what's mine and give it to some lazy ghetto trash cuz somebudy gots to pay to raise my babies! 16. Yep, the Senate got in $3 Billion or more of pet funding in about 10 line items in the last draft. Any number of House members didn't even know about them because, well, you know, they didn't have time to really read the damn thing before voting to save the country tonight.   Even John Weasel McCain called it "disgraceful", as if here were surprised. Guess he didn't read it either, since he voted for it. (as did Lamar and Bobby).   My fave is a little one, $171,000 to the widow of Frank Lautenberg. Since he was worth $56 Million, you'd think maybe she wouldn't be missing many meals or anything, eh?   http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/oct/16/stopgap-spending-bill-approves-3-billion-price-tag/?page=2   http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/16/frank-lautenberg-widow_n_4112148.html   Even RacHell Maddow chimed in on the overall pork deals:   http://video.msnbc.msn.com/rachel-maddow/53301620/#53301620   Ironic these apparently wouldn't have even been in there without the House's histrionics over the last two weeks, so not only did the GOP come out with nada except taking huge hit in polls, but actually lost ground on the overall spending proposals from what they started with.   - OS

  19.     UT can say whatever it wants, but I still wager they'd fail in court. First of all, the AG opinion they cite:    http://www.tn.gov/attorneygeneral/op/2013/op13-41.pdf   says nothing specific about employment at state agencies or state funded institutions, and certainly nothing about students at all. It mentions no distinction between private employers and state funded ones, and seems to be written from the point of view of private ones only.   So UT's and their supposed AG's opinion aside, I still think it's an instant winner for the first person who sues for being fired or expelled from any institution that accepts state funds. Finding a decent lawyer on contingency should be no prob, since one would have real damages in addition to any punitive ones.   Unlike the Employment at Will standing that much private employment has, state institutions (including UT) do not have it and rather have their own published policy for termination and reduction in force, they can not terminate "just because". You'll notice that we've seen no state offices to issue any such warnings regarding the "parking lot" bill to my knowledge, and I'd opine that the reason is that their own attorneys know it wouldn't be enforceable soon as departmental push comes to legal shove. I can't fathom the legal logic that would allow penalizing one for exactly following state law under state supported property or auspices.   This is not to suggest that anyone here become the test case, but someone surely eventually will.   Any of our actual attorneys see this, would welcome your opinions.   - OS

  24. Welcome to TGO. Good advice upthread. I'd like to add something about being in your home vs. not in your home:   As I understand it, TN law allows use of deadly force when a reasonable person would fear they or others are in imminent danger of losing their life or sustaining serious bodily injury*. Location is irrelevant. This applies in your living room, your front lawn, or the produce section at Wal-Mart. If you're involved in a self-defense shooting, the question will be whether or not a reasonable person in the same situation would have that fear.   The burden of proof about whether or not that fear reasonably existed will change depending on location. If the encounter occurs in your home, you have a presumption of fear for your life. The prosecution would have to prove you were not in fear of your life or serious bodily injury rather than you proving that you were**. If you use deadly force while not in your home, the burden is on you to prove that at the time, you did indeed reasonably have that fear. That's what makes a home invasion different than being on the street or in your yard.   As dolomite said, TN law does NOT allow use of deadly force to protect property.     *serious bodily injury is defined in another section of TN law as: A substantial risk of death; Protracted unconsciousness; Extreme physical pain; Protracted or obvious disfigurement; Protracted loss or substantial impairment of a function of a bodily member, organ or mental faculty; or A broken bone of a child who is eight ( 8 ) years of age or less   **This doesn't make a home invasion into a license to kill. If the evidence shows you bound and executed the intruders, then the prosecution can use that to show that you did not have a reasonable fear for your life when you pulled the trigger because the perps were tied up and on their knees, for example.

  27. Before you BUY a shotgun, find someone who owns one and can show you how to properly shoot one.   After you do that, imagine inside your bedroom at Bad Guy Prime Time or 3am in the morning and discharging that shotgun.   It is a GREAT home defense platform, but if you are so startled and disoriented when you pull the trigger the first time, how quickly will you be willing and able to rack the action and shoot again?   The only advice I can offer is based on what worked for my wife.   she became comfortable and proficient with a Walther P22 and .22s poke holes in people just like every other handgun bullet.   When she was comfortable and confident, she upgraded to a 9mm.   We went shopping and narrowed down to 3 options for a full size 9mm; she picked out the one that felt "right" in her hand (Glock 17)   Welcome to TGO!!!

  29. The next day was Saturday and time to pack up and head home. We were greeted with a beautiful sunrise. As luck would have it.... we conveniently passed by a certain place in Columbia right about lunch time. :) To be perfectly honest, I was a little disappointed. While they had lots of stuff, what I most wanted was a brick or two of .22, but they had exactly none. :yuck: I did pick up a few p-mags (they had boxes and boxes of them) and a LPK for my TGO lower. The boys got pop guns. I was sorely tempted by the spam cans of 7.62x54R stacked up and more than a few cases of .223 but my credit card got enough abuse in the prior week. On our way back to the car, my little one got stung by a bee that had crawled up in his shirt. :( After digging through all the stuff packed in the van to get at the benadryl and tylenol, he was fine and slept for the next 2 hours. Good to know he's not allergic to bee stings, though that's not exactly how I wanted to find out. In all, it was a good trip. We probably won't go back there as we kinda like Hilton Head better from a pure beach perspective. But its certainly a nice quiet place for a beach vacation.

  30. After that the weather cleared up and we just enjoyed playing on the beach. My wife when hunting for shells and took some nice pics... On friday, we took the boys fishing. I bought fishing gear a while back after the older one expressed some interest in fishing, but just haven't found the time to actually take them. We talked to several people on the island and everyone highly recommended taking them to Botany Bay WMA. https://www.dnr.sc.gov/mlands/managedland?p_id=57 Only kids are allowed to fish in the WMA and only on friday - sunday. You're not allowed to kill/keep anything you catch and an adult helping must have a license. The ranger/game warden told us to rig for bottom fishing and expect to catch lots of fish. And catch lots of fish, we did. We got there and started baiting hooks. We got the older boy's rod ready first, cast it out, handed it to him, and went back to getting the other rods ready. About 30 seconds later we hear... "Daddy! Daddy! I got one!" Nope, he got two! (Atlantic Croaker and Flounder) Then two more! (Sheepshead) What, only one? After experiencing what it was like reeling these things in with 2 fish on (using 4lb line no less), we put the little one's tiny rod away for fear of breaking it. More on that in a minute... Mom got a few as well.... She also got a crab. Thankfully the blue kind and not the communicable kind... Yours truly even got a few in between digging the hooks out of flounder while trying to not kill them or get bit. [movie reference] It's got huge pointy teeth! [/movie reference] So the little one was having fun helping everyone else for a while, but then he started whining about wanting to use his fishing pole. We tried to get him to use one of ours, but no, he wanted to use HIS fishing pole. We were nearly out of bait, so Dad rigged his tiny rod up with a single hook and a bobber hoping to get something small that he could manage. Something small. Yeah. :dirty: We cast it a few times and had to reel it back it pretty quickly as the wind was blowing it into the bushes. I'd put the last shrimp on his hook, cast it out for him, handed him the rod, and started pack up the other stuff. I heard him squeal and saw the rod jump out of his hands. Thankfully the drag was set really low and it got stuck in the grass on the bank, else it would've been gone. It was feeding line out like crazy so I grabbed the rod and frantically cranked in more drag to try to slow down whatever was on the hook. I got the boy to come back over and very carefully, we tried to reel this fish in without breaking the rod or the line. The fish got tired pretty quick and we couldn't believe what we saw when we got it to the bank. :stunned: Our guess is this was about a 10-12lb redfish. On 4lb line. The fish was nearly as long as the rod and about 2/3 the length and half the weight of the boy. We caught a bunch of fish and had a great time. My only fear is that catching tiny little brim and bluegill at the lake won't seem quite as fun now.

  31. You can't really make any assumptions at all.  There are skinny nerdy guys that are fast and strong,  old guys that can move better than you would believe, fat guys that used to be jocks, and so on.  You have to go into any confrontation assuming the other guy is stronger, faster, and better than you are --- then plan accordingly.  If you were wrong in your assumption, that is a good thing.  If you were right, hopefully your plan works.

  37.     Let me ask you this? What's the reason the legal voting age was 21 years old, now eighteen? Why not 14 years old, 10 or eight years old?   As you all know it's a pipe dream but, the fastest and simplest way to turn this country back on course would be to add four requirements to voter eligibility.    (1) Must be a property owner... What moral right do you have to vote up my taxes for your welfare and you pay or contribute nothing.   (2) Must be gainfully employed,   (3) Must not be on any government teat. To prevent further drain of the shrinking utter.   (4) Must be fluent speaking, reading and writing English and a legal U.S. citizen.    I would like to add a #5, must have an I.Q. of at least 70 but...

  38. Frankly, our nation's last best chance and hope to avoid where we are right now was crushed last November when Obama was reelected and Democrats retained control of the Senate.  Anything that can be done now to stop or slow down Obama's agenda will be a godsend because ultimately, the numbers simply aren't there for conservatives to stop it.   Once a few more million become totally dependent on the federal government (through Obamacare), that 46-48% who currently pay now federal income tax at all will balloon and we'll truly have fewer people pulling the wagon than are in it. Those people vote and those people will NEVER allow their silver spoon be taken from their mouths.   With Obamacare as well as all the other of control spending, the debt will keep spiraling out of control and now with 75-85% of the country's economy is controlled, directly or indirectly by the federal government. With full-on national health care we ARE, at best, a socialist democracy. Obama will get to nominate one or two (hopefully not more than that) Supreme Court Justices and of course, the Senate will confirm which means you can pretty much wipe away anything good that has come out of the Supreme Court that past 10-15 years including the gains made in moving to restore 2A rights.   The Federal Reserve will continue to pump trillions of worthless dollars into the economy, either directly or by buying its own securities and sooner or later (and I think sooner), the U.S. dollar will cease to hold any value at all because the only thing that gives it value, people's belief in it, will evaporate. At that point, we'll see hyper-inflation and likely a world-wide depression beyond anything most of us can even imagine.   The only hope I can see at all is in individual states refusing to comply but that hope is VERY small because in most cases, the worthless politicians who sit in Washington D.C. are just bigger versions than the worthless politicians who sit in State legislatures.

  40.     Messy, smelly, and they weight a frickin' ton.    Dad and I built a retaining wall out of brand new ties at our house many years ago.  New ones are nothing like the old, rotten crap they sell at Lowes.  The most effective way we could come up with to cut them was to use a chainsaw.  We ruined a bar and a couple chains in the process.    The flip side is, 30 years later, that wall hasn't moved or degraded at all.
    1 point
  41.   Yep, the ACA is definitely merely prelude to the eventual US Socialized Medicine Program, and the primary liberal players have counted on that all along.   For the rest of your prognostication, I can't disagree. For all the individual pockets of true conservatism touted by conservative outlets, the over national trend is toward the moderate to uber left.   The House and many state legislatures have managed to stay red because of long time successful efforts in out-gerrymandering the Dems, but you can't do that with the Senate or the Presidency. And you can't necessarily do it successfully in the big cities anywhere.   And the GOP isn't doing a damn thing to help their own image. And no, a few Spartacus-esque figures like Cruz and Lee aren't helping either, however much you may admire their principled spunk. But the fact was there was no pot to win, was just throwing away the ante and all the subsequent bets -- and matter of fact, the Dems got in several nice pieces of pork in the CR that wouldn't have been in there at all sans the ongoing futile opposition.   Anyway, I can't imagine anything but (again)  Really Bad Times happening to avert Hildebeest's coronation, expect the Senate to stay safely Dem, and expect the House to lose ground over time in spite of it's jury rigged voting districts.   - OS

  46. Without hesitation Jack immediately made his way towards where his gear layed on a cleared off desk belonging to a detective who was probably at home this very moment unaware of the nightmare ensuing at this very moment. Jack had removed his gear before helping everyone so as to not exhaust himself, though without it, it made him feel almost naked even with his sidearm still on his side there was just something comforting about a long-gun in his mind. Brigsby made his way in pursuit of Jack, "You need to calm down son; you don't think we all have families?" Jack spun to give Mike a glare and almost spat at him, "One of my sisters is a wheel chair bound Mike, she can't even properly defend herself!" A look of shock crossed over Brigsby's face, "Your sister is crippled?" Jack just nodded without saying a word. Brigsby looked down, ran some ideas through his head. Without saying another word he walked over to where he sat his patrol carbine and a tactical vest. Brigsby began equipping everything he laid down on his desk. He inserted a fresh magazine into his Colt LE6920 which had an Aimpoint Comp M2 and charged the weapon making it hot, he flipped the selector to 'SAFE' then set the weapon down. Mike removed his Glock 22 from the duty holster dropping the mag free and racking back the slide to eject the round that was chambered, he then began to refill his pistol mag from a newly opened box of rounds sitting on the table.   Satisfied with the weapon back to its fifteen round max capacity he reholstered the Austrian pistol. He made his way back over to Jack with his carbine at the ready, "I'm coming with you Jack but I before I go, I need to delegate some orders to Wade." Jack was stunned by Brigsbys statement, "Mike, I can't let you come, you have to tend to these people!" Mike shook his head, "I'm going to put into effect that plan we all talked about." Without saying another word, Mike walked over to the group of people that had come to the station, then in a commanding and authorative but friendly tone he said, "Are there those among you whom have served in the military or a form of law enforcement?" The group of people began to look to one another, three of them raised their hands, two men and a woman; one of the men whom raised their hands was the man who had the breakdown which perturbed Brigsby a little but then noticed a fire in his eyes that wasn't there before, 'This man is out for vengeance, we don't need a loose cannon but IF he's had the training he can be an asset.' Mike looked to the broken man, "What training have you had son?" The man in a flat tonned voice and in a military fashion responded, "US Marine Corps, Operation Iraqi Freedom." That was all Mike needed to hear from the Devil Dog, "You're hired." The man had a puzzled look on his face, Brigsby then questioned the other two whom were US Air Force and a retired detective respectively.

The only "problem" is that due to the nature of it you often have a hard time finding people to practice with....
