  1. I don't either. I buy what I want if I have the money. If not I don't get it. But I don't hide anything from her and don't lie to her either.

  2. I don't. I'm the boss, so I buy whatever I want, when she gives me permission. She doesn't care what I buy. She knows that I'm not going to buy anything we can't afford.

  3. If I had to hide a gun purchase from a wife or girlfriend, I'd figure I'm with the wrong woman. But then, I don't question her purchases either and neither of us spend money we can't afford. I'm lucky i suppose, but if I want something I tell her and she willl always figure out a way to buy it.

  4. Not specifically a hunting story (although some of the "lessons" contained were learned while hunting), but rather a "letter of introduction" to aquaint a former supervisor of mine with the Rocky Mountains: (FWIW, it was also the first piece I had published.)   Dear Boss: Congratulations on having chosen the Colorado Rocky Mountains as your vacation spot this year! As you may know, even though I'm originally from Kansas, I have spent a great deal of time in the Rockies. In fact, due in large part to inaccurate maps, faulty compasses and the mysterious geologic forces which strive to constantly re-arrange otherwise familiar landmarks - I have probably spent more time in the Colorado back country than most members of the search and rescue team. At any rate, I am convinced that you, yourself could not have picked a better destination. I must admit that I am honored that you have come to me for advice and I commend you on your excellent judgment. Naturally, over the years, I have acquired an almost encyclopedic knowledge on this subject and you may believe me when I say that I have forgotten more than you know. From the time of Zebulon Pike to present there have been literally thousands of books and articles authored on the subject of camping and living in the Rocky mountains So many so that my wife jokingly inquired as to why anyone over the age of eight who owns a library card would willingly come to me for advice. I politely informed her that I, for one, could understand your wanting to learn things that only a real expert like myself would know! With that in mind, Boss, I have decided not to fill your brain with information easily obtained from other sources. Instead, I have enclosed the following list of things you should NOT do while you are in the mountains. I know you should not do these things, because unfortunately, I have done them all at some point in the past. Needless to say, the results have ranged from just thoroughly embarrassing to damn near disastrous! Good Luck Boss! May you learn at least as much from my "adventures" as I have... Things you should NOT do in the Mountains (Or anywhere else for that matter!) 1. Do not wrap an egg in clay and place it the campfire to cook. 2. Do not try to start a campfire using only a mouthful of brandy and a Zippo lighter. 3. No matter how cute and cuddly it may look - Do not try to pet a baby porcupine. 4. Never try to kill a skunk with a banjo! 5. Never try to bluff a moose... 6. Never try to cross a stream on any log which is more than ten feet above the water - Especially if the water is less than three feet deep! 7. Never leave your clothes more than a mile from where you are actually "skinny-dipping." 8. NEVER allow yourself to be convinced that riding a plastic toboggan down a two thousand foot snow mass and into a mountain lake would be "a really neat thing to do!" 9. Do not sneak up on your camp partner and "woof" like a grizzly - Especially if they are holding a cast iron skillet or a fly rod. 10. Do not throw rocks or pinecones at your camp partner when they in the bushes answering the call of nature - Especially if they are bigger and meaner than you are. 11. Do not throw rocks or pinecones at any stump that looks like a sleeping bear. 12. If you must climb a tree to escape from a recently awakened bear, do NOT disturb anything which looks like a yellow jacket nest (at least until AFTER you are past it). And finally - Even if the hornets choose to go after the bear and leave you with only a few stings - Do not jump up and down, clap your hands and laugh uproariously while you are still standing in the uppermost branches of a pine tree!     ...TS...

  6. As far as what happens in 2014 I see no reason why dems would lose any seats, on the contrary they might just gain.    The republican party is a fubar'd mess and they are not winning the hearts and minds of young voters.  If they quit harping on gays and abortion they might do very well, but I don't see that happening.

  7. I'm another "I don't."  I don't spend that kind of $ without talking to her first and she doesn't do so without talking to me about it.  If I really want one she'd probably tell me to buy it, but then she always complains that I won't spend money on myself.  This is the woman who kicked me out of the house and told me not to come back without a ridiculously large TV.  :D

  8. Me and a buddy went squirrel hunting about 20+ years ago. his dad ended up walking along with us but not hunting. I was quite the novice and very excited about my second hunting trip. After about 30 minutes I got one and dropped it in the pouch on the back of my vest. About 20 minutes later as we were relocating I felt something move on the small of my back. I instanly knew what was wrong, The squirrel was still alive. I knew instantly how to handle this situation, I ran as hard as I could backwards and slammed into a tree, then would step forward and would thrust back into the tree trying to save myslef from the impending revenge of a stunned squirrel. On about the third time slamming by trophy into the tree I noticed my buddy and his dad laughing hysterically and the stick that the dad used to poke me in the back still in his hand.

  9. Having been to both armorer courses, M&P and Glock, as well as having worked on many of my own of each make, as well as other friends' M&Ps and Glocks, the Glock is easier to take down to the last part.  No roll pins to punch out in the Glock like there are in the M&P and the sear spring and plunger is more fiddley in the M&P. But heck some iconic handguns can be great guns and be a bit fiddley like the K-frame S&W, Browning High Power and CZ 75.   If I had to reach for either a M&P or Glock to save my bacon I would reach for whichever one was closer.

  12. its simple, just pay cash and there is no tracer on it except for, in the case of a gun, the background paperwork which is not public domain so she cannot find that online or anything.    However unless it is a gift for her, hiding things is probably a bad sign in the case of a wife.  GF, not so much, but couples that hide things from each other (again, not gifts) are possibly in need of a good sit down & talk.

  13. I was hog hunting with a buddy in south Florida one afternoon when nature called. I told him to go on ahead on the trail and I would catch up after I had finished my business. We were in planted pines and the forest floor was covered with 4 foot palmettos. I slipped off the trail a few yard and found a comfy spot. Just as I dropped trousers and squatted my buddy jumped a herd of pigs just up trail from me. I heard the squealing and palmetto rustling and realized they were headed right towards me. I desperately tugged at the .44mag on my loose belt with my left hand, while my right held firmly to my anchor sapling. As the hogs got closer, the gun finally came out of the holster. I cocked the hammer and pointed towards the noise, fully expecting to have a face to face encounter in the next seconds. The palmettos were so thick I couldn't see more than 4 feet in any direction. Finally the hogs passed without me seeing one. I finished and gathered myself, chuckling at the prospect of having to fire that Ruger .44mag one-handed from a squatted position, bare-assed, and the likelihood that I would have fallen backwards fulfilling every woodsman's worst bathroom nightmare. When I popped back out of the trial, there was my buddy. He said, I thought that old saying was going to come true, you know the one... I thought you went to crap and the hogs ate you... LOL.

  14. I was trapping coon last season and had a big boar in a body trap. No signs of life when I approached. I'd forgotten my .22 so I popped him in the head w/ a rock just to be sure. Nothing, no breathing, nada. Still, just to be sure, I put him underwater for a couple of minutes while I checked the rest of the traps. I carried him back to the cabin and got the body out of the trap. The second the trap was loose, he came back to life and started trying to crawl away. I jumped back and durn near ruined my drawers. He'd been trapped, stoned and drowned and was still going. At that point I figured  "zombie coon" and dealt with it in the traditional manner.

  18. So, I get to be one of the lucky ones. But really, a lot of us here married way up. I know I did. Anyway, true story: We were down in Birmingham taking some pistol classes from the OpSpec folks. I've shot Sigs for as long as I can remember and really like them. She had a nice 228 but didn't shoot it that well and was not in love with it. The adjunct instructor for her class was Randy Lee (principal of Apex Tactical). After about 30 minutes of her class he let her borrow his tricked out M&P. We stopped for lunch a few minutes before her group did. She saw me, pointed to her eyes, then my eyes, then down to the pistol, gave a big thumbs up and flashed her smile of control. So, no words were spoken but the mental conversation we had was: I really like this pistol, please get one for me soonest. That night we went back to the hotel room to get ready for dinner. While she was in the shower I got online, found what she wanted at Buds Guns and ordered it right then. When she got out I told her it would be here on Wednesday. She said thanks and did I order something similar so that we could train on the same platform. I told her I did and she told me it was proof she'd married a smart man. The next day I bought 3 apex trigger kits Randy had with him. The following weekend we were back at the range shooting our new M&P's. life was good and I got to keep the 228 she'd been shooting. Win win win... Mark

  19. None of that matters for your average self defense situation....  The fact is the Glock 19 can be picked up and used with minimal training (or none) on the weapons platform, and will work everytime as intended.  That can not be said about the 92f or the 1911.  Both of which are great guns, just not good carry guns.   Experienced shooters that practice often can mostly overcome the external safeties on the 1911 and 92f, but the truth is very few HCP holders are practicing enough to do that.   Obviously if the OP was shooting often enough he'd already have a favored platform and wouldn't be asking for opinions on which pistol to get for concealed carry :)    I carried a 1911 for the better part of a decade everyday, they are great guns and I'll never sell the ones I own...  but I'll never carry another one in my life on a day to day basis...  I don't get to the range often enough to be sure under severe stress that I would remember to disable the external safety every time...  and if you ever need to disable the safety, you need the firearm to work right 100% of the time.     A Glock 19 is going to answer that call a LOT better than most other medium caliber semi-auto compact carry pistols on the market today. That is not to say there aren't other good choices, but giving the OP the simple truth, he'd be hard pressed to pick a better day to day carry weapon IMHO.

  20.   I continue to disagree, as statute doesn't say that.     Again, it does not say it only applies to permit holders however. I think the intent of the mention of permit holders is just to make it clear it applies to us also.   Further evidence of intent is in the opening statement in statute: "An individual, corporation, business entity or local, state or federal government entity or agent thereof is authorized to prohibit the possession of weapons by any person...".   Hence, I see no reason a person without a permit couldn't be charged with violation of 39-17-1307 and 39-17-1359 under the wording of both statutes.   - OS

  23. Robert, problem right now is the land owners don't want the hogs to go away. Right now, people that would never ever allow a hunter on their property to hunt, are now allowing you to come onto their property to hunt hogs at 500 dollars a piece per year. Hell, I wouldn't want the hogs to go away either! Ten hunters or more per year at 500.00 a piece? OINK OINK my friend! There is a guy under investigation right now for that! Hog control will not work until the average Joe can blow one a way day or night without being on a list anytime he wishes!   DaveS Hawg Daddy

  24. I just got off the phone with Bob Norris, city editor of the Maryville Daily Times.  I told him that a lot of the mayors were bailing out of Bloomberg's MAIG.   He asked me to cite a news source about the exodus and I pointed him to FoxNews, which currently has the story in the No. 1 position of their website.  I asked if Mayor Taylor is thinking about changing his position.    "That is a good question," Norris told me.  "Thanks for calling it in."  Perhaps we'll see some ink on it in a day or two.

  25. It matters who is elected in 2014 because the Dems, believe it or not, can still do more damage than collapsing the economy. The world will go on after it happens, but with what means to survive is the question. You can bet your butt that if the Dems sweep 2014 there WILL be vast gun control legislation passed which will probably look like registration, and we know where that road will lead to, especially if there is a collapse.

  26. Another in the "I don't" camp.   We budget ourselves mad-money each month as part of our household budget. We don't question what the other spends their mad money on. If I haven't saved enough in my own mad money fund to pay for it, I don't buy it.

  27. I would not suggest lying to your wife or girlfriend about a gun purchase, or anything else…   However, I do believe in (and have tried to educate my sons about) the practice of ‘common-sense notification’.  To avoid problems, when we get home from the gun show we do not walk into the house and immediately/loudly ask Pretty Wife if she wants to see the new ‘whatever’ that we spent $$$ for today, no matter how proud or excited we are about the purchase.    Instead, we patiently wait for an appropriate moment when Pretty Wife is calm and cheerful, making sure that money/finances have not been mentioned in a negative context for at least a week or so.  Then, as Pretty Wife’s feet are being massaged and she has a cool drink in her hand, we let her know that we have something new that we’re sure she will enjoy next time we go to the range, especially with her being such an accomplished marksperson and firearms aficionado.  We also remind Pretty Wife that she is more important to us than anything else in the world, and defending her is worth any sacrifice or monetary expense.   This works most of the time.  When it doesn’t, we just have to man-up and take our lumps.

  29. Well, seems like they tried it the way people here seem to want and it didn't work and in fact, made the problem worse.   Land owners can hunt hogs pretty much to their heart's content on their our land, so it's not as if they can't be hunted at all  And unless I misunderstand the rules, if I own land and I want to let someone hunt hogs on it for me I can do that too, right (at least up to some specific number of people)?   I suppose I'd have more sympathy for those who want to hunt them if they were legitimate game; i.e. existed here naturally, but as I understand it, the only reason these hogs exist is either by accident and/or because some people purposely released hogs into the wild so they could hunt them...that's not legitimate game to me.   Since the current law only restricts hunting on public lands this just doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

  30. Most of my Moms side of the family is north of and centered between Destin and Panama City in Defuniak Springs. It's not far off of Eglin AFB and there are some hogs wandering about the area. My Dad has a house in a little canal town right where the Suwanee river spills into the Gulf and they have quite a few down in those parts as well but I always end up spending my time in a boat when i'm down that way. My grandfather retired from the Florida Fish and Game Commission and was moved around more than a military family so needless to say my Dad has hunted most parts of the state and usually has a funny story to tell about each of them.

  32. If you have access to a soda blaster and a compressor that can keep a steady 90psi it will take, no time to speak of, no damage to the gun or the environment.  I have a crappy compressor and the $25 soda blaster from Harbor Freight and a big bag of soda.  It comes in handy from time to time.  With my compressor I can go in spurts and it works fine for handguns, receivers and barrels, but takes a longer and wastes more soda.  I like the soda blaster better than solvents.

  33. I was hunting down in Alabama a couple of years ago on a Sunday during the playoffs.  My buddy and I had been watching football, drinking beer and eating hot wings Saturday night.  Well I had not been hunting long before nature called.  With the beer and hot wings, lets just say it was not pleasant.  I had no sooner pulled my pants up when a buck comes running in snorting and grunting up a storm.  i guess he was looking for the other "buck" he had heard grunting.  I dropped him with a quick shot before I had even buckled my pants.

  34. Coyote hunting here in mid tn, was running a mouth call looking downwind and heard something behind me....CLOSE behind me. I had a little cover so I slowly turned to my left and saw nothing. As I slowly turned my head back to 12 o clock I spot it at give or take 4 feet! It had walked to my right as i turned left. At that range, Helen Keller could have seen and heard the skunk! To this day I don't know how I didn't get sprayed since I yelled like a school girl and froze in a staring contest. It felt like 10 min but was all of 45 seconds it just looked at me, then sauntered off. That's my funniest story I can think of right now

  38. 22 rifle and a Glock in 40 caliber. The reason for a Glock is they are everywhere and nearly all the parts interchange between different models. 40 caliber because that is what LE, as well as a bunch of civillians, use.   The 22 will be the primary game getter so you want it in a rifle because it is inherently more accurate than a pistol. As far as what kind I would say 10/22. It is, without a doubt, the most produced 22 rifle in the US. It is one of those guns that everyone should own and most guns owners do. And honestly a 22 being shot at 100 yards at an enemy isn't something to sneeze at. You could easily put a magazine into a man sized target at 100 yards in under 3 seconds. No it probably won't drop them right there but they would probably change their mind about aggressing. If you could put a suppressor on it then it would be even better. To me a suppressor is a survival must. You can hunt without drawing attention with the right kind of ammo. Nothing says there is another human in the area than a gunshot.

  41. 1.  FAL 2.  M14 3.  G3   I have carried and fired all three in their military issued configuration.  Today I own all three in their semi-auto civilian version.    -  The FAL is the best overall battle rifle due to its ergonomics, ease of maintenance, tough reliability and "minute-of-chest" accuracy.  It does everything well. -  The M14 is the most accurate battle rifle due to its great trigger and outstanding sights.  A very good choice for a DMR. -  The G3 will shoot any sorry-ass ammo that you can put in it, it does not care.  Has poor ergonomics for "running the gun" and the most felt recoil.   None of them are worth a SH*T firing full-auto. All of them are heavy to carry as well as the ammo to feed them (one of the reason that the Infantry is a young man's sport).    JMHO....., but based on my real experiences with each weapon.

  43. I have countless rounds through all of my M&P's and have never had a problem with them other than the recoil spring on my .45c falls out on it's own when I field strip it. Kind of strange but never has hurt the function on it. IMO... easiest gun there is to detail strip and coustomize to your needs. I just got done changing the sprirgs out from the Apex duty to the competition and added the new Apex poly trigger and it is insane!!!! If I didn't have the thumb safety I would have never done it cause it brings the trigger pull down around 2 pounds but it makes my .45 lights out at the range.
