  4. And Zimmerman had quite the history as well, so I'm not going to buy that Martin was a thug who conspired to get whitey that night simply because he smoked pot and cursed a lot in text messages. Thank God there was no such thing as social media other than the bathroom wall when I was in high school or I'd be thrown under the jail by some of the folks here. If we want to focus on Martin's past and attribute that to his guilt in committing an unprovoked assault, why would the following not be relevant: 1. Allegations of sexual abuse by a younger female in Zmmerman's own family. 2. Assertion from at least one family member that Zimmerman is extremely confrontational and violent. 3. The restraining order and accusations of domestic violence made by a former girlfriend. 4. Being arrested for assaulting a police officer (after confronting said officer for investigating one of his buddies for underage drinking). 5. Lying boldfaced to a judge in a courtroom, as we all watched on national television. I realize that folks will individually explain away each and every one of those points. I also realize that sometimes folks make mistakes and sometimes folks get accused of things they didn't do. However, looking at the TOTALITY of these incidents tells me that there is either some truth that Zimmerman is an untrustworthy scumbag OR the world is just out to get him. There are some damn smart folks here. For you smart folks, think about the people you know who always find themselves in these types of situations and how it is ALWAYS somebody else's fault. I realize none of these things make him guilty if murdering Martin, but they do provide an insight to his character, so anyone taking his story at face value is a fool.

  5. Good points, but I don't blame his parents for bringing in JJ and Sharpton. They felt like their sons case was being discarded and knew that these two self absorbed idiots would bring attention to the case. Good move in my opinion.

  7. Good read. Now, go and post about Zimmermans brushes with the law. We wouldn't want people to think that he was an angel. I know that a lot of you guys are perfect and have raised perfect children. I don't condone Martins teenaged behavior, but I also won't say that he couldn't have become a solid citizen because of his actions as a teen. I exibited similar behavior as a teen. Later, I shook the cobwebs off, got somewhat educated, served this country in combat and now I'm trying to raise my kids to be solid citizens. I've stated before that some of you are trying to apply adult logic to a teens thought process. That would be crazier than Martin thinking that it was a good idea to double back and confront Zimmerman. Remember that there was only one adult at the scene of the crime. Finally, it was good to see the text from Martins father. It shows that despite their circumstances, maybe someone did love the young man and had at one point attempted to raise him properly. We can't control our kids behavior 24 hours a day.

  8. An old military friend of mine came to see me for a few days last week. This guy is your typical, laid back, easy going guy as long as he doesn't run into stupidity. I remember in the service always hearing of his heroics on the flight back from whatever mission he had been on. I never got tired of listening to the stories of how his actions had rallied everyone's spirits and given them the courage to push on when things started looking bleak. He was a true hero many times over for his "take no s*@t" mentality when things seemed too difficult for them to overcome as a team. We became very good friends over the years and have remained close ever since. We were going to see another old military buddy one day and there was this guy in front of us who was going about 20 mph in a 40, pulling a trailer loaded with lumber. We were on a road with broken yellow lines and plenty of room to see no one was coming so, after about 3 minutes of following this guy and realizing we had plenty of room to pass, he pulled out and started to pass him. Well, it was one of these guys who thinks it's fun to play games and speed up, keeping you behind him just so he could be the man with all the "power" in this little battle. He kept this up for a couple of miles until there was enough room where we had more than enough time to get around him without having to back off because of someone coming. Now had I been driving what happened next would have never transpired, but once we were in front of him my friend, whom I'll refer to as "Joey", slows down and stops, telling me he was going to give the guy the opportunity he so wanted to "kick our a*#", which he so vehemently yelled out over and over as we finally made it around him. No sooner had Joey stopped that the guy behind us was already out of his truck and power walking his way up to the car. I knew at this point what was probably going to happen, and since there were 2 other guys in the truck with this jerk, I considered stepping out, but I had no worries that Joey had this covered. As soon as my friend steps out of the car, accelerator boy was almost at the trunk of our vehicle, all raging and acting like he was Rocky or something. As soon as Joey gets to him there were just 2 punches and accelerator boy was laying in the road, bleeding profusely from an obvious broken nose and busted lip. Probably some loose teeth also. His friends were smart enough to stay in the truck, and Joey gets back in and we pull off, leaving accelerator boy to pick himself up and get back in his truck. While it was satisfying to see someone like this finally get what he deserved, I realized that since I was carrying, had this happened to me I  would have had to have the restraint to hold back that inner urge to give this jerk what he had coming. I also realized that, if I had been approached by this guy at, say the store down the road where we stopped and got something to drink, that I would have also had to have the humility to back down from him, or at least try and de-escalate the situation, for fear of having to get into an altercation with 3 knuckleheads. While I had no worries I could have handled the situation, had one of these wacko's pulled a knife or something like that, pulling my gun would not have been the smartest thing to do because any good prosecutor would have argued that I did NOT do all I could have to walk away from the situation. And that's where the discipline comes in. Just because you have the right to carry doesn't mean you should exercise it for any and all situations. Sure, if one of them had pulled a knife on me I'm sure I would have been justified in pulling my weapon. But not for something in which I had started, or at least participated in instead of just walking away. And that's what I feel a lot of people don't realize. Just because we carry and have that right to use deadly force doesn't mean it is always justified. When someone calls you a name or acts like a jerk it doesn't mean it's smart to stand your ground. Sometimes humility is what's called for. And that's why I'm glad my friend has decided he doesn't need to have a permit. He has the wisdom to realize he was pushed too far too many times in the service to be the type to walk away from some knucklehead who doesn't realize what he's up against. And for that I not only respect him, but have learned from him. Once again.

  11. Wow, so based on some of y'all's logic, having an opinion such as mine is somehow condemning a man to jail or something. I had no idea my opinion held so much power. Guess I'll head on down to The Tilted Kilt and let them know my opinion is that the waitresses should start giving free BJs. By some folks logic it is wrong to think a man committed a crime until he is found guilty. I'm curious how many folks thought OJ was innocent because he hadn't been proven guilty. Or how about Casey Anthony, or perhaps Michael Jackson? We have opinions, and sometimes they're different. I have some pretty good reasons for why I formed my opinions. At a minimum I would not count anything Zimmerman says as trustworthy based on his past, so even if I thought he was telling the truth I'd be skeptical. I'm not on a jury nor am I a judge. My opinion holds no weight of the law, so calm your rhetoric about the guilty til proven innocent stuff. I ain't the law.

  18. I’ve tried to stay out of a debate with the race baiters; no one ever has or ever will do well in that discussion. I see a whole bunch of racism from the usual suspects, but also from people I would have never thought I would see it coming from. It doesn’t matter whether he was profiling Martin; he didn’t have the authority to profile anyone other than to call 911 and let them handle it. Will either side try to show he was or was not profiling based on race? I don’t know is there people on the witness lists that were stopped by Zimmerman? Have 911 tapes of Zimmerman’s previous calls been subpoenaed? I don’t own a hoodie and I’ve never been called a liberal let alone a libtard. I’m a conservative that believes in law and order, being responsible for your actions, and thinks Zimmerman acted recklessly and it resulted in Martins death. The verdict no longer matters in this case. Zimmerman is now and will for the rest of his life suffer the consequences of his actions; right or wrong. The case will have zero impact on most of us on our abilities to protect ourselves. It may impact some that think they can start whatever they want because they have a gun. If you think that take a look at Zimmerman a couple of years from now; regardless of the verdict.

  20. I agree. I would have called whoever I needed to call to get justice if someone murdered my son. George Zimmerman is standing trial because some citizens did not agree with the DA’s decisions. They went to higher authorities who decided to bench him and put in a replacement. Both sides of this are yelling racism; and will be long after the verdict is read.   IMO what led this case to trial has little to do with race and a lot to do with citizens not standing for a bad call.
    2 points
  21. Maybe the case was being discarded...maybe it should have been. Maybe the reason it was being discarded because the original DA (instead of the one they had to go shopping for) looked at the evidence and knew there was no crime that Zimmerman committed. ;)

  22. Your absolutely right Link, we'll never know if Trayvon would have eventually turned his life around or if he would have ended up bieng in/out of prison. All we know is that he was a "troubled teen" who seemingly had embraced the thug lifestyle and despite the warnings of friends/family continued to misbehave. As his friend had predicted, Trayvon's out of control behavior did indeed earn him "one in the chest", so Trayvon was well aware of the potential consequences of the path he had chosen, and because it was his brutal assault which forced Zimmerman to end his young life, I am having a difficult time feeling any sort of sympathy for him. I'd probably had felt some sympathy for his parents had they not turned this tragic event into a racial circus, grieving is one thing, blaming "whitey" because you couldn't control your kid is another.

  23. Many here would be livid if someone brought up the fact that a gun owner involved in a shooting had smoked pot or talked to their friends about guns. But it seems okay to make those accusations about a murder victim. It’s okay though; open the doors and let the mudslinging begin. Many more people will be able to identify with someone that smoked pot or talked about guns than someone that attacked a Police Officer and had an order of protection taken out against him by his girlfriend because of domestic violence. If character assassination becomes an issue in this trial those facts coupled with Zimmerman’s perjury will destroy him.

  47. Where from this article do you get the idea that CarFax reports can't be trusted? Frankly, if a bunch of used car dealers are suing CarFax I'm inclined to believe that it's not because CarFax has done anything wrong. Rather, I suspect these dealers don't want their potential customers to know the real history of the vehicles they are peddling...I mean, it's not like a used car sales would ever lie of course but they may not even know the real history! ;)   Unless a consumer does some real investigation he has no way of knowing what a vehicle has really been through and I wouldn't be surprised of some of these dealers are also ones that have been sued for doing things like selling flood damaged cars, etc.   A used car dealer not wanting to use CarFax does not automatically mean they have anything to hide just like that dealer not belonging to BBB is an immediate indication of a problem either but before I buy a used car from a dealer I'm going to want to see its real history and I'm only going to deal with a dealer with at least an "A" rating from the BBB.

  48. "The Mogwai" may look like a small furry dog, but in actuality is a very close relative of the Ewoks from the Forest Moon of Endor in the Star Wars movies.   And, "Black Rifle" is an Ancient Heirloom of the Clan of Graycrait of the Village of Clark, in the Province of Tenn-ess-ee, near the border of the fearsome Ken-Tucks.   Though small in size, Ewoks, and their cousins, including "The Mogwai," are very smart and fearsome warriors.   Some believe "The Mogwai" is skilled in 13 forms of martial arts, is adept with almost all varieties of lethal weapons including barking and biting, and possesses great stealth capabilities when necessary. Also, "The Mogwai" reportedly can Kill You with its Mind; or its breath, if it gets close enough; or its tongue, by licking you to death.   All is not as it appears to be; appearances can be misleading, or even fatal for the naive.   Beware!

  50. While at first blush I was tempted to place this into the Ammunition and Reloading forum, it seems to me that this is in actuality the better place for it. Often the subject of "stopping power" in a handgun comes up on other forums and in physical conversations. To be blunt, the notion of "stopping power" from a service / self-defense handgun cartridge as it is envisioned by the general public is non-existent and therefore should not be the primary factor when choosing a handgun for self-defense. It is my opinion and that of many others who know far more about the subjects than I do that you should chiefly choose a carry handgun based on how well you shoot it, how likely you are to carry it due to comfort / size / weight of the firearm, and how reliable the firearm will be. Without passing grades in these three areas, a handgun is in my opinion completely unsuitable for carry. You will see from the chart below that when comparing well-designed defensive ammunition, there are minimal differences in penetration depths and in temporary cavity effects. This photo was provided by Doug Carr. As you increase the diameter and mass of the bullet from 9mm / 357SIG, to .40SW, to .45ACP, more tissue will be crushed resulting in a larger permanent cavity. Also it should be noted that the larger bullets typical offer improved performance through "intermediate" barriers (clothing, vehicle and building construction, etc.). However it should also be noted that for some people, the benefits of the larger calibers is offset by the fact that a larger caliber typically begets a larger weapon frame which begets decreased ergonomics for the shooter depending on their physique. The photo provided above makes it obvious that NONE of the common service pistol calibers generate temporary wound cavities of sufficient size that it would cause significant permanent tissue damage. Refer to “Handgun Wounding Factors and Effectiveness” produced by the FBI FTU, as this remains the single best discussion of the wound ballistic requirements of handguns used for self-defense -- it is available at: http://www.amazon.co...94498334&sr=8-1 So too is the notion of "expansion" or recovered diameter used to support the preference for larger caliber handguns. As seen in the photo above, the bullets recovered from ballistic gelatin show that modern defensive cartridges in the different calibers exhibit similar expansion diameters. Keeping in mind that it is not the size of the hole going in that is as important as the depth of penetration and the amount of bleeding caused within that affects the effectiveness of the bullet, one can see that choosing a handgun solely on the basis of caliber ignores far more important factors. Primarily, you should choose the handgun for carry that: You are most likely to carry rather than leave at home You shoot the most accurately Offers the best reliability Summary: Caliber used as the basis for choosing a defensive handgun is, within reason, bull$#!%. All modern service calibers provided comparable performance and all of them offer generally poor incapacitation ability when compared to rifle calibers. Therefore, choose the gun that you shoot best, that you're most likely to have with you at all times, and that won't fail to operate when you need it the most.
