In many of these recent news stories involving children who decide to go on a shooting rampage, it appears as if some gun owners find it acceptable to leave their firearms unsecured in the home, even with children present. How about you? While at home, I almost always have a firearm within arms reach. The rest of my firearms are secured in a locked safe. I have a teenage daughter who's been raised around firearms and taught how to safely operate many of them. I would like to think she would never feel the need to go on a shooting rampage, or accidentally shoot herself or someone else. As a responsible gun owner, I feel it's my duty to do everything I can to ensure that never happens.7 points

Just wanted to add, in case anyone else gets a case of tinfoil poisoning and decides to go full retard like this... I don't just play a forum Administrator on TV. I started this site, I own the site, I run the site. I'm not just "an" administrator, I'm the Administrator. And I'm note deleting anything. I'm leaving this out there like a head on a spike at the castle gate... a speed bump for stupidity. Here there be dragons, chief.6 points

I just want to thank everyone who came out to the 2nd Amendment Rally this weekend. It turned out to be a great event with around 1000 people in attendance. Love you guys here on TGO. -Nikki Goeser6 points

Reformatted it. Kinda wish people would do that on their own, but whatever... back to the subject at hand. Our forefathers didn't just up and decide one day that they were going to pick up their rifles and start firing. They exhausted every other option first, realizing that once they crossed that line there was no going back. Currently I do not believe we have exhausted every other option. The battle can still be fought and won in the political space without anyone having to shed blood or give up their life to preserve the Second Amendment and keep the government in check. Do I think that it will always be this way? Sadly, no. History has taught us that governments and societies can only last so long before something causes them to fall apart. Our Republic has done pretty good for itself over time, but the past 60 years have indeed shown that the twin cancers of Big Government and Entitlement Society are spreading. In the past 20 years that spread has been largely un-checked, un-restrained, and outpaces the ability of conservatives or constitutionalists to stave it off. Eventually there will likely come a day when the people who value what our ancestors fought and died for will answer the challenge of those in elected office of "...OR ELSE WHAT?" with another shot heard around the world. God help us when that happens. God help us avoid it as long as we can by winning the fight on the battlefield of politics.5 points

I have very little politeness for a true crusader. I'll smack them in public, even if they're a good friend. If you have a chance to swing somebody your way, it's worth taking the time to hear their side and have a polite debate. We have to realize that the mainstream media and a lot of their friends are feeding this crap to them by the bucket loads.4 points

That's good for that boy though. Learning bravery and acquiring the balls to what is necessary cannot be accomplished over night. Kings to your boy for manning up for his old man and his sister. Folks; I would like to propose a moratorium on pejorative "creative" misspellings. Specifically, pejorative misspellings of proper names like turning Diane Feinstein into Diane Fineswine or Swinestein, and turning Liberal into Libtard or Libturd and so forth. Sure, those little things feel good when you do them. They are a guilty indulgence that expresses your contempt for these people or things, however I also believe that they make the author look childish and cause the mainstream fence-sitters to automatically write us off as frustrated juveniles with an inability to articulate our thoughts and opinions without resorting to schoolyard taunts and mockery. When we do this, we discredit ourselves. It's no secret that the Left has made a career history of establishing itself in the eyes of the public as the "Mental Elite". They have carefully ensconced themselves in the towers of academia and use this vantage point to lord over and brow beat us -- their adversaries -- and paint us as knuckle-dragging neanderthals with room-temperature IQs. It is my opinion that we play into their hands when we resort of using pejorative misspellings of their names and they casually dismiss it as being about as base level as a fart joke. We need to rise above that. We need to conduct ourselves smartly and remind society that just because we value the Constitution, we are not a bunch of mouth breathing pinheads. Further, it makes it impossible for a person to search TGO's contents and accurately find articles of interest by using key words when those key words may have been intentionally misspelled by the author who thought it was funny or cute. So, there it is. I would appreciate it if everyone would please join me in this. I have been as guilty of these things as the next person, but I am personally committing to rising above the petty name calling and instead will be focusing even more on letting the substance of my words illustrate how despicable the subject of my derision is. Thanks. :)2 points

[quote name="mikegideon" post="891698" timestamp="1358783885"]No kids in my house. I always keep one close, but the rest are locked in the safe. I will say for those of you with kids, keep them locked up tight. BUT don't hide them. My old man kept his handguns hidden. Needless to say,I found them and knowing full well it was wrong, I played with them often. I was staying home by myself by the time I was 12 and I tell you, a 12 year old has NO business running around the woods with a 357. I did. Thankfully I didn't hurt myself or anyone else. I only did it because I wasn't allowed to see them. Had I been allowed to see them I wouldn't have cared enough to find them and boost them for their supposed secure location. Don't hide them people. It's not the gun it's the mystery that get kids in trouble.2 points

WAIT FOR IT! STEADY MEN! The fact the gun stores are empty and gunshows have crowds never seen before indicate that the Anti-gun people are dead wrong. Most Americans support the second amendment or all the non-gun owners would not be flocking to gun stores to exercise their 2nd amendment rights. We need to be steady and maintain discipline. The Battle of Stones River was lost when a bunch a Ridge Runners failed to exercise military discipline when Bragg attacked the union left flank. We need to be smart, learn the enemy and defeat them. As far a camo is concerned, wear whatever you like. You'll never see me wearing camo......get it?2 points

I keep mine locked up too. My son has a few guns and all of them are locked up and he can only access them if I let him in the safe. Sometimes he just likes to get them out and inspect them, which is fine as long as I am nearby. He doesn't have the combo and will not be given the combo until he is much older and wiser.2 points

Yeah, but you didn't wear your TFA hat. :usa: I saw a lot of NRA hats, which is good. But when it comes to Tennessee, it's the TFA that the politicians recognize as the powerhouse. Still, it was an excellent event. My guesstimate of attendance was 700, and the media said over 1000, so I was pleased with that. Rep. Mike Carr was adamant that Haslam, Ramsey, and Harwell are 'good' people and friends of his. I have to wonder why he thinks that the voters give a rat's @ss about that? My $.02 is that I could care less whether he likes them or not. The only thing that matters to me is whether his votes agree with me. I have Liberal friends. But that doesn't mean that I would ever trust them to vote for me!2 points

Good counter point and definitely thought provoking. However I maintain that the unfortunate fact is that the opposition will use, at every opportunity, a picture of a person carrying a firearm at a rally like this to divert the public's attention away from the substance of the issue and toward the sensational, "scary" gun. The media is intent on painting a picture of firearms owners and carry permit holders as armed radicals who aren't like the rest of society. Frankly I'm surprised that the only picture the Tennessean could get at this rally was of a normal looking guy legally carrying a common-place, mainstream Glock rather than a guy dressed in camo with an AK-47 slung over his shoulder. I guess they (The Tennessean) had to make do with what presented itself. Or maybe they planted the guy. Hell, I wouldn't put that past the media either to be honest. My opinion is that the only way we are going to alter perceptions is to do it individually with people we already know where a civil conversation can be had and eyes can be opened in a non-threatening manner. You and I spot a guy open carrying and we might not think too much of it. Or we might cautiously keep half an eye on the guy while he's in our immediate vicinity just because we've conditioned ourselves to be vigilant. But Suzie Homemaker with her 2.5 kids standing in line at McDonalds is going to see that guy who is open carrying in a different light. She's probably going to be scared by the inanimate object on his hip, pull her kids in a little closer, or -- if she's a belligerent type -- make a fuss about it. That firearm on the guy's hip likely won't persuade her of anything but will somehow, illogically, reaffirm her believe that guns are scary and people who carry guns are scary, and that he, you and I shouldn't be allowed to carry them around her and her 2.5 kids. Then she'll run home, blog about it, Facebook about it, and post a dozen angry things on The Tennessean's comment sections about it because she didn't like it. Think I'm blowing this out of proportion? Have you read comments in those places? It's enough to make you wonder how some people rationalize themselves out of bed in the morning. Anyway, my firearm is not a political statement. It's there for my protection and I prefer to keep it that way. I've got a box of crayons and some poster board if I want to make a political statement at a rally.2 points

There is a time for everything. For now, listen and listen extra well. When you want to just blast someone, ask a question and try to understand what they are feeling - and why. People want to be heard and "felt". If they experience this, you earn their ear. I know it sounds fluffy, fuzzy, and weird; I know it goes against what your mind and body are telling you, but it is true - and it is the key to winning over the middle. Listen well, acknowledge the feelings of those who are on the fence, ask questions. Earn their ear; make sure that your desire for the well-being of men, women, and chidren take the lead in conversations - not just our rights (which protect that well being). If we do this well, we may yet be able to restore stability to our rights as citizens without sharing so much as an angry word.2 points

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Sometimes we gun owners are our own worst enemies. We piss and moan and bitch and whine and complain - rightfully so I might add - when someone tries to infringe on our right to carry concealed. But let someone have the nerve to open carry and public, lawfully, and we don't even wait for the gun-grabbers to skewer him. We do it ourselves. God forbid some smelly hippy of a leftist freedom hating hoplophobe gets upset over the sight of a gun! Oh my we couldn't have that, could we? Yes, this is a war of perception. And the people's perception right now is that only a few extreme whack jobs carry guns in public. And we are part of the reason they think that way. You really need to examine yourself thoroughly and decide whose side you're on. Instead of lambasting those who believe the 2nd Amendment applies even if you wet your pants at the sight of a gun how about laughing at the wet spot at their feet instead?2 points

To me, it's as stupid as a neutral safety switch on a transmission. If you ain't got no more sense than to start you car in drive, maybe you shouldn't be drivin. Glocks don't need safeties. Only responsible owners.2 points

I agree 100% you want to avoid a fight in SHTF but knowing offensive techniques is also a must. Even if you want to back out there will be times in which you must be prepared to remove that threat as well. Any training will help you become a better fighter. OP, grab some training videos and watch them. The majority of the drills can be done at home without firing a single shot. Dolomite2 points

I was in Tn on vacation visiting my folks when I google "Nashville shooting range" found two things, CHMR and TGO. Been members of both ever since. Stuck around Charlie's on account of the fact that aside from being the best bargain around, he is one hell of a guy. My brother called me several times in Ca to say that Charlie was asking on me and sent his best. Stuck around TGO because it was immediately apparent that David had created a true community. I've been a member of several forums and for the most part they are essentially popularity contests. Whoever has the highest post count or the snappiest one liners gets his questions answered or his answers taken as gospel. Not at TGO, everyone's thoughts count for something here, and that's impressive in and of itself. Add to that the fact that folks help each other out on a regular basis and what we have here is a true community. I've had the privledge of meeting several folks on here face to face and every time I've walked away feeling as though I've made a friend.2 points

I would think that top to bottom any common SD handgun caliber would shoot right through it. Side to side I don’t think most handgun calibers would go through 6 feet of it; but I wouldn’t want to count on that. When the bad guys come through your bedroom door; shoot them and this will not be an issue.2 points

We were talking about this a few days ago. As tight as tthe supply line is on food and medicine, I expect that somtime there will be something happen that causes a disruption in the supply, and thus a run on stores and a shortage. That will be a very bad situation if people buy up food like they've been doing with guns and ammo!1 point

Holly, our blue female doberman at about 15 months old Axl, our male black and rust doberman at about 7 months old Axl and Holly running together. They are biological siblings but from different litters. Holly is just a little bigger still, but Axl will pass her up. They play rough with each other when they are awake, but they also like plenty of sleep time. They are great dogs. Here's a little older photo of Axl and Holly looking at the camera together. They are best buds. B1 point
