Where do I start with this? For those of you that don't know, I am the manager at Stones River Hunter Education Center. I will try to keep my personal opinions about this type of thread to myself and just state facts. Lets start out with numbers. Stones River Range is only open Friday, Saturday and a half day on Sunday. In 2011 we had 15,992 shooters use this facility. That is an increase of 12.5% from 2010. 2010 was up 12.5% from 2009. How do these numbers compare to other ranges in the area? Cheatham Range has about 2500 shooters a year and opens every day at noon till sunset. Montgomery Co. Shooting Complex has about 5000 shooters per year and are open the same days as Stones River. John Sevier in Knoxville has about 4500 shooters per year and are open more than Stones River. Bartlett Range has about 2200 shooters per year and is open more than Stones River. Add all those up and Stones River is busier than all of them put together. What about safety? I challenge every person that reads this to go to what ever range you go to and just sit down and watch what everyone else is doing. Without a doubt you will see someone do something that is unsafe. Stones River has been open for nine years and we have had one person seriously injured and that person shot theirself. I HATE RULES. I HATE ENFORCING RULES. I wish I could tell everyone to goto the range and just use common sense. But common sense is very uncommon. Therefore to be fair to everyone I enforce all the rules here equally to everyone. Whether it is me or an RSO the rules are enforced. I think what we are doing here is working. We have an increasing number of people including women and children using this range. That is because they feel safe here. A range without rules is a range doomed to fail. It is only a matter of time. Look at Cheatham, no supervsion and a thirteen year old boy is shot. It took twenty years but it happened. How many close calls do you think have happened there before this? Let me go through Nashville Slim's important details as he calls it. 1) We only take cash or check no cards. This is true. We check in a person to goto the range about every 70 seconds. Sometimes we do it faster. We have the ability to take cards but it is so hard to do and time consuming. This is what happens when you put government in charge of something. Private business has had this figured out for years. So we don't take cards. Again, look at the numbers I think what we are doing is working. 2) We do not sell ammo. It is not the range's intent to compete with local business. We send alot of people to the local gun stores to buy ammo. We do sell two very simple targets just for those that come to the range and don't bring their own. We do this as a courtesy to the shooters. It is not our intent to make money on targets. 3) We do not rent guns. The state considers guns to be a very sensitive item and they don't want to rent guns. Again support local businesses and buy a gun. Everybody needs one, two or ten. 4) We do inspect every weapon every time to make sure the gun is unloaded and the barrel is clear. If TSA stopped checking bags and a bomb blew up an airplane people would want TSA back checking bags. Why do you complain about us checking guns? We have found dirt dobber nests, plastic bullets, muzzleloaders that have already been double charged, etc, etc, etc in guns. These guns are nothing more than a bomb that is going to blow on the range. This is why we check guns. We do require guns to be in a case but you can have as many guns in a case as the case will hold. 5) We do no allow concealed carry on the range. We do not allow shooters to draw from a holster on the range. Why you ask? Would you like to be in the lane beside someone doing double cross draws from shoulder houlsters? Or someone trying to get a .38 special out of their wasteband without sweeping the line? I can go on and on here. NO CONCEALED WEAPONS. 6) We allow you to have water on the line. We are in TN where the summer heat and humidity is miserable. You need something to drink then. EPA doesn't want any food, drink or tobacco on gun ranges because of the possibility of lead ingestion. We allow water against EPA rules. We don't allow sugar drinks on the range because I don't want to clean up the mess when you spill it. 7) We only allow one target per lane on the pistol range. The rifle range can have multiple. The reason for this is simple. If you post a taget off to the side of the provided backing and place your target at 5 yards and the person in the lane next to you has his target at 17 yards you will shoot thru your target and hit his. I know this has boogled some of your minds but that is the way the angles work. We only use push pins( we provide them for you) at Stones River because the shooter has to pickup their taget frame and move it to change the distance they are shooting. If we allowed staple guns the frames would get full of staples and they would cut the shooters hands up. This rule is to protect the shooters. 8) We need volunteers. You think you can do better come and help out. Otherwise don't complain about how someone else who is volunteering their time so you have a place to a safe place to shoot treats someone who is complaining about everything. 9) This is a rifle and pistol range not a shotgun range. If you want to shoot a shotgun here, bring slugs. 10) Yes we are extremely busy, just look at the numbers. To date our one day record is 216 shooters in one day. We have had as many as 502 shooters in one 3 day weekend. An average weekend is 325 shooters. 11) We are located 8 miles from Mt. Juliet, 4 miles from Lavergne and 6 miles from Hickory Hollow. There are two Academy Sports, Dicks sporting goods, at least three privately own gun stores and a WalMart store with 8 miles of the range. I can't tell you how many restraunts are in that area. Too many to count. I guess some people just can't be pleased. I have a suggestion for anyone that does not like the rules at Stones River, go somewhere else. Go to Cheatham range. There are no RSOs and you can shoot while people are down range and they can shoot while you are down range. Better yet, buy you some land and build your own range then you can do whatever you want. Just look at the next thread about Royal Blue range. Every rule we have is for a reason, to keep you safe while you are here. Do you want this range to close? Why can't you be appreciative in the fact that a state agency has seen the need for people to have a safe place to shoot and that it is provided to you for a minimal fee and there are people willing to volunteer their time to keep you safe? I am at Stones River Range most everyday it is open. I will be glad to talk in person to anyone about this range. I have been here for eight years. I have attended the NRA range school and consider myself to be one of the most knowledgeable people in the state on gun ranges. If you have a suggestion come see me but don't think you can just make a statement and walk away. Be prepared to give facts for your comments and be prepared and open to what I have to say in return. Don't leave here and hide behind a computer to make critical comments. We are always open to suggestions. @ mikegideon Please stop in sometime and introduce yourself. I would like to meet you. @ JWC It has been discussed to give people that buy hunting and fishing licenses a break on range fees. But the idea behind that is to get more people to buy licenses to increase revenue. I agree with you. Hope this helps clear up so many misconceptions. SRHECMANAGER2 points
You obviously didn't bother to Google the Obama third term articles. No tin foil on my head. I didn't create this stuff up. Again read before making accusations.
No, other people created that stuff up......................out of thin air. I looked up and read the articles, and wish I had those minutes of my life back. All I see is people like Alex Jones, Porter Stansberry, and Joseph Farah pushing this tripe. Basically, you have ignorant fool Birthers and 9/11 Truthers concocting yet another conspiracy theory to feed the group of other ignorant fools who follow them. Hell, last year, Stansberry was predicting that Obama would be the end of America, would lead this country to disaster, and there would be destruction and riots. Now he is predicting that Obama will lead this country to unprecedented prosperity that catapult him to a third term. Honestly, I fail to see how anyone with an ounce of intelligence can believe this stuff.2 points

The part I love was the irony of the comment "children that young aren't mature enough to handle a gun." Of course they aren't, that's why you supervise them handling an unloaded firearm and teach them why they should never should handle one without an adult around. If they aren't allowed to satisfy their curiosity, they'll do it without an adult around. I keep my guns locked up, but what happens when your kid is at someone else's house and finds an unsecured firearm? The first thing they'll do is pick it up and pull the trigger if they haven't been trained not to. My father was a LEO, and when I was young he always let me handle his service weapon starting at the age of five in order to desensitize me to the allure that most children have towards firearms. It works. New Yorkers have just lost their minds.2 points

so guess what I decided to try. You guessed it. I tried my hand at making my own knives. I wish I had made more pics of the process but I rarely think that far ahead. The first one was more of a prototype just to see if my thinking on the matter was sound. I went through the whole process including heat treating and tempering. I just used cheap metal that I got at Lowes, and a piece of hickory that was in my firewood pile. I ended up with a decent looking knife, it just wo;t hold an edge. It did serve it's purpose well though as I learned i could do it. So I did it again. this time to make a one that I would not completely assemble. This would give me a practice knife. One that I could learn to sharpen and polish metal and learn how to shape, finish and attach scales to. It came out ok to so I just kept going. The next step was to get some real steel and go for it. I ordered some 1095 stell and bought some nice wood to make scales from and fired up the ole belt grinder. I now have made four knoves total two of which are actual knives. They get sharp, very sharp, and stay that way. One has become my everyday use knife and I finished the fourth one today. I know what you are all saying to yourselves right now, "Without pics, it didn't happen." so let me give this a try. I am not very computer savy so I hope these post right. This is the very first one that is actually made of mild steel LOL, but the plan worked, Here they are in the order I made them as a work progresses on them, The bottom two are actual knife steel Here is the last one I finished today. It is quite large actualy and 3/16th" thick. The metal was bigger than I was expecting so I figured I should make a big knofe out of it LOL. This is all four of them as finished items. Trace Adkins explains Confederate flag earpiece http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2012/11/30/trace-adkins-explains-confederate-flag-earpiece/?intcmp=features Some people need to just get over themselves. All of the political correctness and the constant apologizing is getting old. I'm a former yankee, got healed of that in 1974. I don't see the problem with a Confederate flag period. It doesn't represent what liberals and those who would claim to be politically correct say that it does. They need to get over it. I could make a list of things that offend me and cry about them (NAACP, BET, UNCF, CBCF, etc.), but I say live and let live. Give it a rest already.1 point

After taking an SI class with Randy where my beloved CZ75B Omega broke after 10,000+ rounds, I broke out my SP101... Since the SP is EDC 10% - 20% of the time, it was a great opportunity to see how well I could shoot with it. Pretty well as it turns out, but I realized 5 shots with slower reloads using speedloaders could be a problem with more than one BG. I also discovered speed strips were a no go for me maybe because I am a southpaw Any recommendations, under $600, new or used, for an all steel or steel/alloy 9? If nothing in that arena, I have handled a full size M&P and liked it, what about their compact / shield? I simply don't care about the weight - my first EDC was the SP and I have no problems with the full sized 75. Thanks, GtG1 point

The ham radio guys will get this - If you ever think you will attempt DXCC Honor Roll in your doddering old age, then you probably want to pick up the ZL9HR DXpedition on Campbell Island (~230 deg, ~12K mi from TN) They are on this week (right now), and are relatively easy to work. It may be your one and only opportunity. Get it in the log and confirmed. First time I have ever heard this one (chasing DX since 1975) , and it was one of the two I had left to work all of current DXCC. Now I am down to one, FT5Z - Amsterdam & St. Paul Islands (which for practical purposes has not been on the air since the 1970s). Wake me up when they come on the air. Bert - K4AR1 point

I have had and still have night sights on some of my pistols. But my night gun at the house, a G17 has a weapons light on the rail and conventional sights. I have a weapon light and laser on my home defense shotgun. I have a weapon light on my self defense AR, which as a civilian I don't plan on doing any long night shots.. I am not LEO or any longer in the military. Who, as a civilian, does aimed fire at night with a pistol to save their butt? I've heard something that seems to sound right in that most civilian encounters it will be dark/3 shots/3 seconds/3 yards. I'm thinking most of us have bought into a marketing "thing" when it comes to night sights. OK, to find the gun at night they may be a good thing, but when I go to bed that G17 is in the same place every night, as is the shotgun. I can find them with my eyes shut. Just for the sake of argument can someone make a clear case that most of us need night sights on their self defense handguns?1 point

Eventually they'll just substitute adult with 911.
" I am sure at some point teachers will tell kids "guns are bad, m'kay" I am not sure if all Knox County schools do it, but both of the grandsons have been exposed to guns through public school with the Eddie Eagle program. I am a firm believer that by letting the boys handle guns whenever the mood strikes them it removes the mystery of it all. The youngest one has no interest really, and the older one knows he can shoot when he wants to within reason. But both of them know they can see them or handle them whenever they want to, even it it means pausing the football game or whatever. I handle them when I want to, no reason they can't do the same.1 point

Production at all major manufacturing facilities comes to a halt. Nissan, Volkswagen, Bridgestone, Vought Aircraft, GM Spring Hill, just to name a few of the hundreds. HCA shuts down and the County Music Industry moves to LA or New York. The U.S. Department of Energy shuts down Oak Ridge. TVA has a big problem. I suspect the FEDS will take them over and call it National Security. Oh and by the way, what makes you think you are going to have anything to say about travel on the Mississippi, and who is paying for the Navy you are talking about? Of course if you own your land outright, don’t need a job, and you picture yourself living off your land; none of this matters.
It kinda didn't work out 150 years ago, and I don't see it working out now, for many of the reasons you cite. It is truly a disgrace that this anti colonial, anti American Exceptionalism, anti military student of karl marx and cloward piven has been elected to the white house AGAIN. It make us the laughing stock of the world. He took Hitlers advice to get the youth first. Don't think for a minute the "cult of personality youth" will not do his bidding when the time comes. Read Orwells 1984. It's like to old fable about the frog carrying the scorpion across the river w/the promise the scorpion wouldn't sting the frog. When the scorpion stung the frog, the frog asked "why did you sting me?" The scorpion replied "because I am a scorpion, stupid". The american idol generation, the spineless, american sheeple represent the frog. The kenyan in chief is the scorpion. Just think about the conversations he must have with that lovely bill of rights advocate and promoter of racial equality wife of his at night. How stupid he must think the american sheeple are. It would be priceless to hear the dialougue. They must really, really laugh themselves to sleep at the apathy and ignorance of the flock. He is doing everything in his power to destroy this country from the inside out and the socialists are cheering him on. Again, we are no longer the land of the free and home of the brave. We are land of the sheep and home of the slaves. Slaves very comfortorable in their chains by the way. Pitiful, just pitiful.1 point

Thanks Brad, this season has been a long time coming. I know a lot of people who root for ND and it is great to share the season's success with them. I have been in a group of 20 or so guys for about 15 years or so. We are basically an email based message board. We all met on an old AOL ND fan board back then. At some point it became about sending emails so as to not have to deal with trolls. A few of the guys went to ND, a couple played ball there, one guy went on to the NFL. One guy is a sportswriter. I think our ages are from 20 somethings to a couple of guys in their 70's. We lost a gentleman last spring named Layden. I wish he was still alive to enjoy this year. I also wish my Dad's mental state was better as well. I am not sure he really knows what ND has accomplished so far this year. For me this season is a tribute to Layden and my Dad even if they aren't here or knowing whats going on. ND made a great hire in Bryan Kelly. Like UT is finding out, hiring the right coach is not an easy task. Kelly is laying a foundation like Saban has done that helps ensure success for years to come. ND went from Lou Holtz to a lot of guys qualified to be a head coach but none of them could get it done. Kelly has the ability and drive to field teams that can contend. I fully expect to be in the hunt again next year.and the foreseeable future. Though there is no telling how the ball will bounce and how the calls will go. The foundation for success has been laid. I hope it can come to fruition this year. Regardless of who wins or loses I hope it is all left on the field in the hands of coaches and players. No crap or blown calls. Just a hard fought game with one team coming out ahead through their efforts. It ought to be a helluva game.1 point

A union boss walks into a bar next door to the factory and is about to order a drink to celebrate Obama's victory when he sees a guy close by wearing a Romney for President button and two beers in front of him. He doesn't have to be an Einstein to know that this guy is a Republican. So, he shouts over to the bartender so loudly that everyone can hear, "Drinks for everyone in here, bartender, but not for the Republican." Soon after the drinks have been handed out, the Republican gives him a big smile, waves at him, then says, "Thank you!" in an equally loud voice. This infuriates the union boss. So the union boss once again loudly orders drinks for everyone except the Republican. As before, this does not seem to bother the Republican. He continues to smile, and again yells, "Thank you!" So just to make his point one more time, the union boss once again loudly orders drinks for everyone except the Republican. But, as before, this does not seem to bother the Republican. He continues to smile, and again yells, "Thank you!" Frustrated, the union boss asks the bartender, "What the devil is the matter with that Republican? I've ordered three rounds of drinks for everyone in the bar but him, and all the idiot does is smile and thank me. Is he nuts?" "Nope," replies the bartender. "He owns the place."1 point

Its ignorance and hate on the part of most of the people that attack that flag. Its ignorance and distortion of facts that they teach in the schools today that the Civil war was fought over slavery. When I was in school they taught that it was fought over States Rights. Did something change between now and 50 years ago? Of course it did. Its hate in that many people see that flag as a sign of racism because many people fly that flag as a sign of racism. Does that mean we shouldn’t be allowed to fly it? It’s coming to that. I was born 100 miles from the Capitol of the Confederacy, and if I had been alive at the time of the war I would have fought on the side of the south. However, I get tired of the ignorant people that think because I moved here from Illinois I am a Yankee. I am not apologizing, make no mistake about it, the North is my home and it’s hopefully where I will return to retire. The war is over, and it has been for 147 years; the South lost, get over it. But none of us alive today fought in that war. Anyone that pays any attention to my posts knows that I am an unyielding defender of States Rights to the point where as I have said many times States Rights trumps the 2[sup]nd[/sup] Amendment, has since the civil war, and there isn’t any other way the SCOTUS can rule than the way they are now. The South may have lost the war, but they made sure no one wants to fight that war again. It was because of this we have the States Rights we have today. All Confederate flags are part of history. They can be flown proudly. The people that don’t want them flown, and the people that make their dumbazz remarks about “Yankees†are both showing their ignorance.1 point

Who takes up arms first is irrelevant. There will be no bloodless secession. Signing a petition is pointless especially one that is only symbolic. If people really want to effect change that can happen when they get their hands dirty and get involved in the process - get out from behind their keyboards and their TVs and go to meeting or run for office or work for a candidate. If they think civil disobedience is the way to go then they actually need to engage in some. This "petition" isn't worth the electrons it takes to generate it.1 point

I find that word "collectively" somewhat disturbing.1 point

I believe in arming children with the facts about firearms. Therefore my grandchildren are taught to safely handle and shoot firearms at a young age. They know gun control is about hitting your intended target.1 point

I heard that they microchip the guns, use RFID, and scan your face when you are purchasing the firearms. They put the data in a special database that is sold for marketing purposes. An extra copy is delivered to Feinstein and the Brady group so that when they come for the guns...they will know exactly where to go. Bloomberg machines serve double duty to track all owners in real time. The gun's receivers are made from grade BB chinese pot metal and the wood made from a 2x4 soaked in dioxin. But other than that they are 100% like any other gun sent via a distributor.1 point
TMF, no one is saying (at least they shouldn't be) that shooting people in the pelvis NEVER works. Just like no one is saying shooting in the head ALWAYS works. I have friend whose dad shot a guy in the leg and the guy stopped. But then you have guys like my great grandfather who killed two guys after BOTH of them had shot him in the torso. Neither one hit anything vital...and he hit both the other guys multiple times in the chest and they died on the spot. You just don't know how someone will react to being hit in a non vital area.Sometimes they crumple and sometimes not.... Most people shot in the heart, spine or brain react the same....
I agree with what you're saying, but I'm just trying to keep this subject grounded in reality versus theory. It is not realistic to think you'll be able to engage a small area of a person's face in a situation like this, no matter how much you train. I'm saying this having done more failure drills than I could count with the collective fingers and toes of all the people on this board. I still do them. But I would never trick myself into thinking that I would choose that as a primary target, especially when I know I can get 5 shots off faster into one sight picture than two to the chest and one to the head. The split second it takes to make the transition to a different sight picture isn't worth it to me, especially when I know I might not land the shot on a moving nugget. If I can't finish it with 5 shots to the body in quick succession, than I have landed into the remotest of remote situations, made even more remote by the assailant not responding to fear or pain. So if I ever get attacked by 7 ft tall tweeker who is high on PCP and wearing body armor I might be in trouble. Otherwise, my experience tells me that my course of action is most likely to result in a more positive outcome with out assuming more risk. But I'm a "play the averages" sorta guy.1 point

Head shots are easier said than done when it gets real. Center mass is always best.1 point

And he truly is a great guy to do business with. He is one of the most honest people I have ever met. He is also very knowledgeable guy that is will to share it with anyone who asks. He is a veteran as well. He has the lowest prices and largest selection of anyone at the shows. He also gets items you will never see another dealer carry. When was the last time you seen a dealer with 500 S&W brass in bulk? Or 300 Blackout brass that is properly annealed for less than most other sell 223 brass for? To give you an idea of how nice of a guy he is. Every single show, that I have been there to witness, he has given a gun to the parents of a young shooter. Generally it goes to the parent who has a kid that is roughly 10. He realizes that it is the kids who are going to keep the shooting sports around for us in the long run. Dolomite1 point
