1.
No one knows a slave.
Would that were a true statement. In my tenure in Mexico (only a few years ago) I met many that would by all accounts be termed slaves, serfs to the land and Masters that held complete thrall over them and their generations. Because the average American does not know any slaves does not mean there are none left in the world. Our State Constitution guarantees that each non criminal Citizen has the right to keep and bear arms for their defense, there are no restrictions as to location espoused by our founding documents. Our Supreme Court has ruled: "The right to keep arms, necessarily involves the right to purchase them, to keep them in a state of efficiency for use, and to purchase and provide ammunition suitable for such arms, and to keep them in repair. And clearly for this purpose, a man would have the right to carry them to and from his home, and no one could claim that the Legislature had the right to punish him for it, without violating this clause of the Constitution. Bearing arms for the common defense may well be held to be a political right, or for the protection and maintenance of such rights, intended to be guaranteed; but the right to keep them, with all that is implied fairly as an incident to this right, is a private individual right, guaranteed to the citizen, not the soldier." The "Government" in Tennessee is supposed to be the People, at least an extension of them. The Legislature (for good or ill) is charged in our Constitution with the power to "regulate the wearing of arms with a view to prevent crime". They have no power by the written word to control the keeping of them, that being an absolute Right guaranteed by Article 1 Section 26 of our Declaration of Rights. Shame on us that we have allowed Business interest to purchase our Legislature's duty and honor to keep our safety and pursuit of happiness at the forefront of their endeavor for silver, allowing it to stand. Those who are not parents can not understand the trepidation one who is feels for the safety of their children, and those who do not have grand children more especially can not begin to understand true fear at the ways of the world. Seeing that none but ourselves may be held accountable for the security and safety of each of us, the Government abdicating, as they have and must, the provision of protection, along with the Business owner who proves to care none for the life and safety of the general public when they garner sustenance from the fruits of having it either work at their places of business or show up to purchase goods there, require the individual to be solely responsible. It is the responsibility of those who are concerned to use their Constitutionally named responsibility under Article 1 Section 23 to "to instruct their representatives, and to apply to those invested with the powers of government for redress of grievances, or other proper purposes, by address or remonstrance." I find it my duty to push for this law, having two daughters that drive the roads in the 9th most dangerous municipality in the US, (Jackson, TN) with my grand babies in their car seats. Both are precluded the ability to have their legally owned weapons on hand in case they get stranded by a flat or car trouble of any type, simply because their employers fear them being able to keep the best tool for their protection locked in their personal property during their work hours. I refuse to give up this struggle.

 3.
That sure is a short sighted statement. Not everyone can hop from job to job especially in this economy. I've had to endure that same line in the Parking Lot Bill thread if someone works for a company that bans firearms from employees' cars. Perhaps someone can drive to work and home unarmed and pray for the best. I guess that same person working on Thanksgiving should pray that their family doesn't miss them.
Everything comes at a sacrifice. Want to feed the family? Then you might have to work on Thanksgiving. Don't like it? Then work somewhere else or don't work at all. Sorry, I've missed several Thanksgivings and Christmases while deployed to war along with hundreds of thousands of other Sevicemembers that have endured the same. I never expected pity or appreciation, so I have a hard time empathizing with a person that can just go find another job.

 4. a holiday is just another day of the week that ends in Y. Work it, don't work it, I don't much care either way. And wasn't Thanksgiving made an official holiday pretty much for the sole purpose of signaling the beginning of shopping season?

 5. This week many of us are bound to be traveling for the holiday and spending time with family and friends. I wanted to go ahead and wish everyone here a very Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels! For those of you who are currently off of American soil, serving our country, please be safe and enjoy the holiday as best you can knowing that we're thinking of you back here in the States. I realize that for the majority of us here on TGO, the recent election did not go exactly as we had hoped it would and we are gravely concerned about the future of our nation. There are some here who are without a job, and we likely all know someone who has either lost their employment or otherwise taken a hit because of the economy. Several of us this year have lost loved ones or are presently watching someone close to us writing what may be the final pages of their life's story. But despite all of those bad things, I take comfort in knowing that we have much still to be thankful for. If for no other reason than simply the fact that we still live as free men and women in what Alexis de Tocqueville referred to as this Great Experiment. Enjoy the week ahead!

Plenty of hard working folks make a career in fields that don't pay well, have crappy hours and require back breaking work. That is not to say they are lazy or stupid, that's just the path they chose. I come from a very blue collar family of not much means. It isn't because they were lazy, it is because the choices they made set the path for their life. They don't bitch or expect sympathy for the lifestyle they chose. The point is, folks like to attribute circumstance to all the good and bad in the world. That mentality IS lazy and is a cop out. You make your own choices. Rich or poor opportunity doesn't change that. If that choice is to work menial jobs your whole life, then great! That isn't shameful or lazy. But if you look to others with envy and blame circumstance for your station in life, then you most certainly never, ever improve your station.... not so long as you can shirk responsibility for your choices.

 23. The fist Thanksgiving was a celebration (November 1621) for the good harvest and, I would suggest, to thank God for his blessings and that is an example that I think is worth following. I don't know if there is a "war" on Thanksgiving but if you listen to any of the "mainstream" media, you'll come to believe that Thanksgiving is nothing but a celebration of white, European imperialism and narcissism.. It's become nothing more than the "starting line" for Christmas (excuse me, "holiday) shopping... I think that's pretty sad.

 30. What a total douche. I love how he appeals to the old some kid found their daddy's gun argument.
Gun-lovers love to think they are responsible. No matter how responsible they are, or think they are, there is a strong possibility that kids will find their guns. My grandfather (to be honest, I question his responsibility) left his gun in the trunk of his car. My cousins and I touched it as kids, and may have picked it up. I don’t know if it was loaded. Around five kids are injured or killed by handguns each day in the United States, according to the The Survivors Club. The children of parents you’d probably consider responsible, in one recent case of a police officer, find guns and hurt or kill themselves.
Well, that is it. I am convinced. We need to ban swimming pools. Swimming pools serve no function in society outside of personal enjoyment, which is analogous to target practice. Since there are so many accidental drownings, we should ban them. After all, it is for the children. Ya know, I have never understood why so many people feel this incessant need to interfere in the lives of others. My advice to them would be to have a Coke, a smile, and shut the f*** up.

The people who bitch the most about their job are usually the same ones who refuse to get training or education to get the job they want. If you work a minimum wage, low skilled job don't complain when you are treated like low skilled, easily replaceable worker. You can get a new job but it won't come and land in your lap, you have to make it happen. Don't be surprised if it means you have to put out from 5a-9p instead of 9a-5p.

 34. RWF, Talk with your Doctor and Physical Therapist and tell them what your goals and objectives are as well as how important shooting is to you. Then while working towards your goal of getting back into handguns shooting again find someone with a Ransom Rest with the trigger pull attachment. With this you can begin working on your sight picture and sight alignment without the current frustration. Just being able to be at the range and do some accuracy shooting from the bench should be a great day. Later as your strength and hand control improves you can adapt other rests, braces and trigger shoes into your shooting routine.

 36.
TMF, no one is saying (at least they shouldn't be) that shooting people in the pelvis NEVER works. Just like no one is saying shooting in the head ALWAYS works. I have friend whose dad shot a guy in the leg and the guy stopped. But then you have guys like my great grandfather who killed two guys after BOTH of them had shot him in the torso. Neither one hit anything vital...and he hit both the other guys multiple times in the chest and they died on the spot. You just don't know how someone will react to being hit in a non vital area.Sometimes they crumple and sometimes not.... Most people shot in the heart, spine or brain react the same....
I agree with what you're saying, but I'm just trying to keep this subject grounded in reality versus theory. It is not realistic to think you'll be able to engage a small area of a person's face in a situation like this, no matter how much you train. I'm saying this having done more failure drills than I could count with the collective fingers and toes of all the people on this board. I still do them. But I would never trick myself into thinking that I would choose that as a primary target, especially when I know I can get 5 shots off faster into one sight picture than two to the chest and one to the head. The split second it takes to make the transition to a different sight picture isn't worth it to me, especially when I know I might not land the shot on a moving nugget. If I can't finish it with 5 shots to the body in quick succession, than I have landed into the remotest of remote situations, made even more remote by the assailant not responding to fear or pain. So if I ever get attacked by 7 ft tall tweeker who is high on PCP and wearing body armor I might be in trouble. Otherwise, my experience tells me that my course of action is most likely to result in a more positive outcome with out assuming more risk. But I'm a "play the averages" sorta guy.

 39. Let's define the problem a little better..... Is the target a suspect held at gunpoint 6 yards away who suddenly produces a weapon? Or is it an aggressive panhandler who had maneuvered to within 2 arms length and then suddenly produced a weapon? Or is it an active shooter who is 30 yards away? Or is it someone doing their best Trayvon Martin impersonation who has mounted you and working the ground and pound trying to beat you to death? You see the answer largely depends on the situation. If he is 30 yards away then COM is all you are likely hit ....no matter how good a shot you are . If he is farther than 5 yards then the head is not an easy shot unless he is not mobile. At less than 4 yards (and closing on you) then head shots are A LOT easier than most people realize. Can you hit a volleyball at 3 yards ? How about 2 yards? If we plug it into actual close range assaults the head shots get easier...IF that is what you have trained to do and trained to do it against live opponents while you are semi adrenalyzed. And if you understand the OODA concept, action vs reaction, and how to exploit that to your advantage it is easy. How about in touching distance? With him on top of you ? Once you have grabbed his left arm and pulled across to your left side(unbalancing and dropping him onto his face and chest onto the ground) and scooted your hips (to your right) out from under him? Now you just draw and lay the muzzle on the back of his left shoulder and fire a shot from 4 inches from his head. Can you make THAT shot? I would hope so. So we see that depending on the distance and depending on your training and depending on your skill as a shooter and your ability to shift gears from the defensive to the offensive you can in fact make head shots IF you try to. Would I recommend it for the typical CCW license holder? No. But there are people out there carrying guns in public that have FAR and AWAY more skill than the typical CW holder and FAR and AWAY more skill than the typical police officer. For THOSE people? They can make those shots. You just have to make a real serious assessment of your skill level and decide accordingly. And that decision does not need to be made for the first time in the middle of the situation when it is real....... As for me, in MOST situations the body shots are plan A. But realizing pistols are notoriously weak stoppers plan A is actually a burst of 3 to 5 to the body...and then IMMEDIATELY stage for the headshot. If the head is still there...then take the shot. If it is not...then he fell down....and we simply do not take the shot. Pretty simple. I look at the body shots like a flurry of punches to the body setting them up for a knockout blow.....if they fall from the body blows then we don't throw the hook.... The body shots at 3 yards (assuming you understand grip and follow through) are fired like a burst from a submachine gun. Due to the close proximity of the target these can be fired at warp speed and still get tightly grouped high COM hits. These are more times than not going to be LIKELY to do what needs to be done.....but I do not EXPECT them to. I EXPECT to then have to take the head shot. And since I am EXPECTING it, I am already looking for a sight picture and getting ready to take the head shot once the last shot of the body burst is fired. Not standing and gawking wondering why it didn't work and what to do next. Training fills in those empty pages in your mental rolodex so you know what to do next and don't hesitate or freeze. But there are situations where head shot might be plan A. If the BG is rapidly closing with a contact weapon or if he is reaching for a weapon and at 2 arms length distance then the head may well be plan A. but for MOST situations outside 2 arms length then the body is still plan A.

 42.
I have been following this for a bit and have decided to add my quarter (penny thought plus inflation). My right to have my tools is a personal right guaranteed in the constitution. A business owners right to deny my rights does not trump my rights. A business owner cannot block a person from entry based on their race or other qualifiers, do why should they be able to block me entry based in my right to bear arms. What's worse is the fight to tell me what is in my car, and why? It is in my car, not yours. Unless it comes out and into play in the commission of a felony what business is it of yours? None in my opinion. Either you support the constitution in its entirety or you don't. Business owners that do not support the second amendment in its entirety receive no sympathy from me when their rights are violated or when they find themselves disarmed and then confronted by those with nefarious intent. The basic concept of the 2A is the ability to have weapons available to citizens to defend themselves. I see now I was rather long winded. I am just tired of folks trying to infringe on my rights, the ones written into the constitution, based on flawed logic that then place me at a disadvantage when my life is at risk. My rights do not trump yours and vice versa. Leave me alone about what is in my pants and I will leave you alone about what is in yours.
You have no right to be in a private business at all. A private business owner can ask you to leave and if you refuse he can call the Police and have you removed. He doesn’t have to give the cops a reason either. Being black (race) isn’t against the law; carrying a loaded gun is a crime in this state. Not only is it a crime, but civil law allows for the business owner to be sued if someone is shot by you while you are carrying your gun on his property. That is a very heavy burden you want a business owner to accept on your behalf. “Other qualifiers”, you mean like saying that you must wear a shirt and shoes, and you can’t enter with a cigarette hanging out of your mouth? What if you are carrying a five gallon can of gasoline? All those things are legal, but a business owner doesn’t have to allow those or anything else he doesn’t like including guns. We all believe that we should have a right to bear arms. But to believe that we actually have that right is preposterous. The state on Tennessee openly acknowledges that you have a right to own a gun, but you do not have a right to carry one; that is a crime. The Supreme Court of the United States is the legal interpreter of the Constitution and they agree with that. The fact that you or I have bought the privilege of an HCP doesn’t make it a right and doesn’t allow us to drive it down the throat of a business owner and call it a right. If my interpreting this (along with things like the smoking ban) as a thug government is flawed logic…. Then I’m guilty.

 44. Robert, I'm about as ProGun as it comes... And the parking lot bill is a BAD bill, and I can't support it. The argument you make is that of a progressive who believe they know what is best for me and my property. The person who knows best what to do with their business is the owner of that business, period. His business isn't there for the 'best interest' of society at large, it is there solely for what is the best interest of the OWNER of said business. There are much simpler methods to deal with anti-gun businesses which choose to post... don't do business with them... just like you won't go do business with a restaurant that said 'whites only', you shouldn't do business with a business that posts. I know, it's a tough economy, you can't go spend an extra $1 on a hamburger, or find a job with a pro-gun company... well that is your problem, not the problem of the property owner. We should be focusing our efforts on the one part of society where we have no choice, government buildings and land, unlike private businesses we're forced by law to interact with these groups, there are no other choices available, we end up paying taxes and can't use parks, and government buildings because the government can use 1359 to ban otherwise lawful carry. That should be our real target... Ask yourself why is the capitol building still posted? All it takes is 2 signatures to remove the postings... The missing signature Beth Harwell. As for your argument that people need a 'good enough for you' reason to want to ban firearms, I disagree, private property even if it's a business should not have to explain to you, me, or anybody else why they want to ban firearms, only that they choose to... and You, I, and anybody else can avoid that business and vote with our pocket books. We have so many really bad firearm laws on the books, which seem to be a lot less likely to run rough shot over other peoples constitutionally protected rights... We should be focusing on those laws first, and let this bad law die.
There is a clear distinction, both in law and in practice, between private property used for private purposes and property used for business purposes and that distinction has been recognized for many, many decades. I agree that the rights of the property owner should be protected but no one right exists in a vacuum; they interact with other...sometimes they conflict with one another and when that happens, a fair balance needs to be sought; a balance that does the most good and least harm. I would suggest that the larger issue that should impact whether "parking lot" legislation is or isn't passed into law is what constitutes the best outcome for society at large. We have a large amount of history/data to show that an armed citizenry is a benefit to society; as such, if we (the government) can promote citizens being armed with little or no infringement on the rights of property owners then it's appropriate to make that possible. Other than the cry of "private property rights" (a cry I believe is misguided), I've not read or heard even one argument that has shown me any measurable, negative impact on a business owner simply because an employee or a customer chooses to have a legally owned and transported firearm in their vehicle while it's parked in a parking lot that is open to the public, and not just "open to" but where the public is invited to be. 45.
,,,,,Recent history doesn't seem to support your argument, look at the break up of the Soviet Union... States were allowed to leave and form their own countries, and while all of that happened under a massive economic turmoil... trade didn't stop, cross board travel didn't stop, and life went on in a crappy way...
I don't think that's a valid analogy. A long complicated affair, but basically Mother Russia kept granting more and more autonomy to its SSRs and eventually cut them loose via it's own prerogative. All spurred by systemic economic failure. So far, Mother USA (Washington, DC) is still tightening control over its states. Perhaps once we totally fail economically as did the USSR, something similar might occur. But what results wouldn't be 50 individual nation states, but regional countries. Like the United South East, Confederation of Mountain States, Rust Belt Federation, New England Union, Pacific Pact, whatever. Might reform into a looser national confederation for trade purposes just as the current CIS that replaced the USSR. Hmm, maybe it wouldn't be so bad. - OS
I do kind of think DA/SA is the worst of both worlds though A trigger than changes as you use it, soundly defeating muscle memory.
This has always been my rationale. Not that it can't be done, and done well by folks that shoot a lot, but I'm too lazy for that. I carry a 1911 for that reason. Same light pull every time.

I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has clearly run its course. Our two ideological sides of America cannot and will not ever agree on what is right for us all, so let's just end it on friendly terms. We can smile and chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and go our own way. Here is a our separation agreement: --Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by landmass each taking a similar portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively easy! Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate tastes. --We don't like redistributive taxes so you can keep them. --You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. --Since you hate guns and war, we'll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military. --We'll take the nasty, smelly oil industry and the coal mines, and you can go with wind, solar and biodiesel. --You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donnell. You are, however, responsible for finding a bio-diesel vehicle big enough to move all three of them. --We'll keep capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart and Wall Street. --You can have your beloved lifelong welfare dwellers, food stamps, homeless, homeboys, hippies, druggies and illegal aliens. --We'll keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, greedy CEO's and rednecks. --We'll keep Bill O?Reilly, and Bibles and give you NBC and Hollywood . --You can make nice with Iran and Palestine and we'll retain the right to invade and hammer places that threaten us. --You can have the peaceniks and war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we'll help provide them security. --We'll keep our Judeo-Christian values. --You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism, political correctness and Shirley McClain. You can also have the U.N. but we will no longer be paying the bill. --We'll keep the SUV's, pickup trucks and oversized luxury cars. You can take every Volt and Leaf you can find. --You can give everyone healthcare if you can find any practicing doctors. --We'll continue to believe healthcare is a luxury and not a right.. --We'll keep "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "The National Anthem." --I'm sure you'll be happy to substitute "Imagine", "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing", "Kum Ba Ya" or "We Are the World". --We'll practice trickle-down economics and you can continue to give trickle up poverty your best shot. --Since it often so offends you, we'll keep our history, our name and our flag. Would you agree to this? If so, please pass it along to other like-minded liberal and conservative patriots and if you do not agree, just hit delete. In the spirit of friendly parting, I'll bet you might think about which one of us will need whose help in 15 years. Sincerely, John J. Wall Law Student and an American P.S. Also, please take Ted Turner, Sean Penn, Martin & Charlie Sheen, Barbara Streisand, & ( Hanoi ) Jane Fonda with you. P.S.S. 50. I don't get it, a college aged kid was arrested for simply possessing a pocket knife in his pocket? OMFG imagine the terror if he had also been sipping on a 64 oz Big Gulp full of soda & eating a greasy bacon double cheese burger along with over-salted french fries fried in trans-fats!
