Ice Quakes - Cryoseism

I had heard some booms like this tonight outside but haven't felt anything. Many people on my Facebook feed are talking about hearing it too. I live in eastern Maury County about 10 miles from Columbia. Pretty interesting. Never heard of such.

Happened here. I just thought it was the wind blowing a chair over. I then realized they were all stuck to the deck and went to investigate. Seeing nothing I assumed contraction due to the cold but didn't think it was in the ground.

Wonder if that's what I heard about 5:45 this morning?  My first thought was something just landed on my roof, but there's nothing above my house but air.  I walked around outside and didn't see anything.  I'll check in the attic when I get home this evening.

That's interesting. I kept hearing what I thought were small limbs falling on the deck about the same time.

I need to go investigate.

It actually startled me the first time I heard it last night. It sounded like someone slamming a truck door right off my back porch. I live out in nowhere so I had my G19 in hand as I looked out the peep hole and stepped out to listen. I came back in and looked on facebook and several other people described the same noise and then I heard it several more times throughout the night.

I heard a loud boom this morning. It was the back of my head hitting the parking lot at work. I'm ready for spring.

Had four of them occur at my house last night, did a look-see on the first two, around the house, yard, crawlspace, attic... found nothing. At first I thought it was something falling off of a shelf in the garage, then I was concerned that perhaps the house was losing an iced gutter. Also was concerned that perhaps one of the house pilings in the crawlspace had shifted for some reason.

 

Definitely startling and puzzling until I figured out (thanks, interwebs) by the third one that it was ice in the ground.
