Tenn. Lawmaker Proposes Second Amendment Tax Free Holiday
By Chris Cannon. CREATED Jan 29, 2015

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A Tennessee lawmaker has filed a bill that would create a Second Amendment Tax Free Holiday during the first weekend of September.

State Senator Frank Niceley has proposed the idea to sell guns, ammunition and hunting supplies tax free during the weekend.

What the hey, i'll go for it,I wouldn't mind saving some money, I would make a plan to buy something that weekend, probably ammo but I wouldn't limit myself to that. Also, anything that would boost business in the state for even one weekend is a pluse. And it would add to the message that Tennessee is a 2nd. Amendment friendly state, much more than some others. Also for the entertainment value of seeing some rabid anti-gun cultist have a ballistic hissy fit.  :)

You know, it's a nice thought and all... and I certainly support the notion of less taxation... but I have to wonder what better use of his time there might have been than filing a proposal that we all know good and well won't get passed.  How about spending more time on Pro 2A legislation that will actually make a difference?

This just seems like an empty token gesture to me.  We need Pro 2A legislation that will benefit our state for generations to come, not novelty legislation that matters for one day a year and saves someone $50 on a $500 handgun.

I like it.... It sends the right message...The second amendment and firearms ownership is key to every citizen's freedom... Everybody needs to understand that....

More than that; it will send the "weenies" (...think inner city rats here; like Joe Armstrong...) into a fit, and that will be great to watch... Way ta go, Frank...!   Keep up the good work....

You never know, things have been passed that I never expected to do so.  They need to realize that though they may miss the tax on extra sales that weekend, many of those sales would not of happened otherwise.  Many people will rather buy used than spend the extra 10% on a new gun, I know I do.  I have seen some weapons at the LGS that are priced decently only to go above what I would pay when you add taxes and the background check.

I don't think it will get in the way of more important 2nd Amendment legislation and I do think the message of it is important. Each law that supports the 2nd Amendment, even if it's a token gesture is another step in the right direction, it will get media attention every year and I believe that it will increase sales a little on firearms and ammo that weekend. The message of it shows the State of Tennessee supports the 2nd Amendment to the rest of the country. It's a shame that we even have to pass laws to support a right we naturally have, acknowledged by the Bill Of Rights but that's the reality when there's soo many Un-American politicians and groups fighting to take that right away. So the message of it is important, along with a minor savings and increased sales.

In a perfect setting, they should support both. In the real world, well, you know...............

I still remember well, and it wasn't that long ago just to buy a handgun in Tennessee took about two weeks for a background check and waiting period, there was no carry for citizens period, you had to have your firearm visable and the ammo far away from it transporting it in a vehicle and a long list of places and areas that you couldn't have a firearm whatsoever. We have come quite a ways from that bit by bit. I'm still hoping that in the future we will have Constitutional carry, restrictions in local parks lifted along with a few other things. In the meantime I will support whatever legislation that supports our 2nd. Amendment rights no matter how minor it is. In a perfect setting instead of creating legislation to support the 2nd. Amendment, the legislature would just remove all the laws that infringed upon the 2nd. Amendment. That sure would simplify things but lawyers and politicians are just like engineers, take something simple and complicate the hell out of it.

What legitimate purpose would it serve?  The current tax-free weekend is for school supplies, to help students get ready for the upcoming year.  Yes, I know people who abuse it for clothing shopping and to get a new computer, but it's a real relief for those who need the savings.

I can't find a good reason for adding guns to it, other than it would be nice, and laws that are made with that mentality are rarely useful.  I'm with David, I'd like to see legislation that helps gun owners 365 days a year, not just a weekend.

Its a nice gesture, but I'm pretty cynical. Politicians are so used to increasing their popularity, power and influence through throwing alms to the little people, they assume everyone is swayed by the dollar. Take your pandering and my tax dollars to effect real change.

The 2nd Amendment isn't about taxes.  We need laws to protect our rights, not a token tax break.

Yes, but a bill like this may get more people to become gun owners and with that a bigger voice for 2A issues.  I say anything that supports more people exercising their 2A rights is a good thing

Yeah, it's just a stunt. Wouldn't mind it, but I imagine no chance to pass. Then again, wouldn't have thought we'd be the Patron State of Eating Roadkill either. ;)

There's a local gun store here (Maryville/Alcoa actually) that has 10% off or "we pay the tax" sale every year during the regular tax free "holiday" weekend.  The don't raise the prices either.

Maybe some other stores would step up without it having to be legislated....you know, to actively attract business.

On a personal level I'm all for it,,,,,,, here it comes,,,,,,,,,,,,, BUT if we have a tax free weekend for guns and ammo sales the golf guys would want a weekend. The softball guys would want a weekend, etc.. etc.. How about doing everybody a favor and stop sales tax on food? It costs too much to put food on the table now.
