My first 1911-Ruger Night Watchman Commander

I finally ventured into the 1911 world over the weekend and I'm pretty happy. I put 100 rounds downrange with only one FTF. The gun even ate Gold Dot's without issue. This gun is around $100-150 more than the regular SR1911 but it comes with night sights and better grips(IMO) so I think it was worth it. Plus, I think it looks a hell of a lot better than the standard Ruger.

The only negative is that the trigger leaves a lot to be desired but it's already getting better.

Now I just need to find some 8 round magazines and a nice leather holster. What do you all carry your 1911's in?

Second the Wilson Mags!!

And I saw one of these over the weekend. Awesome looking pistols.

That's the commander size isn't it? I held the 5" and was sorely tempted to break out the credit card. but I held off till after property taxes are paid.

Yes sir. I went with the Commander length. For reasons I can't articulate, I seem to prefer commander length 1911's.

Actually, I do as well. For the first 4/5 1911s I had to have 3/3.5/4" barrels. Just felt sooo good.

Then I started shooting a little more seriously, and got a 5". Maybe I don't shoot any better, but it is a lot easier to shoot the 5" than the shorter length pistols.

That increased sight radius really helped me.

If you haven't shot a 5, try one out. Then put it against yours. Not saying you will just hate the commander, but I think you will be able to tell the difference. Edited by hipower

It's purely cosmetic for me. I just like the way the commanders look for some reason. Since I have a bunch of ugly polymer guns I figure I'm allowed to be picky about the looks on this one.

Quite good reasoning. I agree that the commanders look far better than the full size to me. And that glossy black Ruger is stupendous. No question about it.

Nice heater!  I'll second the VM2 for a holster, but have an Alien Gear 2.0 on the way for my Colt, and carry it in a Raven Concealment Phantom so I'm all kinds of non-discriminatory.  I do have a pile of leather VM2's and VM2 clones for various guns including my Commander-length 1911s, so you can't go wrong there.

It's a keeper and now that the lightweight commander by Ruger is out that may be next choice. I had be set on get a Dan Wesson Guardian but now I got to decide which one to get.

I am with you. The Gardian in 9mm was near the top of my list for next purchase, but I like the ruger 1911s, especially for the price.
