After watching the Lone Survivor, I am all fired up, and if you ain't burning as well, your woods wet!  Anyway, I was just poking around on Amazon, and noticed that the DVD release of Captain Phillips is set for Jan. 21, 2014.  I did not see the movie when it came out, do you recommend it?

I saw it and really enjoyed it. I don't know how accurate it really is, and the ending seemed a little drawn out for my wife's taste. I don't know that I would buy it, but having seen it once, I would still rent it to watch it again

Captain Phillips was good, Lone Survivor was leaps and bounds better IMHO. Can't wait for Lone Survivor to come out on Blu Ray. I may even opt to go see it in the theater again.

Not trying to draw any comparison, other than a military operation movie that I did not see.  Just in the mood for military movies right now after watching Lone Survivor this weekend.  Yea, I may sneak off next weekend and see this movie again.  Maybe the 3pm showing, and if I am lucky, maybe 2x if I do a little movie hopping.

I'd say give CP a viewing.  I really enjoyed it, might have been a little long.  Too me it really illustrated just how BA the American military that we can organize and operationalize such a response anywhere in the world in such a short amount of time.  I enjoyed them both, but don't think it's fair to compare them to each other.  I don't really buy movies much anymore, but will probably rent CP for another viewing, and will probably see LS in theater again.

It's a decent flick, if you are in a mood for  a good war movie:

Saving Private Ryan

We Were Soldiers

A bridge Too far

Acts of Valor

Patton

Letters from Iwo Jima

Band Of Brothers

The Pacific

I have 100% of those mentioned in my personal library, thanks.

Finally bought the movie.  Not too bad, definitely not even remotely close to the same class of movie as the the Lone Survivor.  Anyway anytime I can see Navy Seals in action, its going to be a good movie for me.  I still think that 3 shots simultaneously was incredible by the Seals.  Just think if the crew had just one AR15 or some type of lone distance bolt action, there never would have been a problem.

I think the main fear of the pirates in real life is many of them have RPG's and other shoulder style missile launchers and that is what fears most big ship captains more then the boarding the ship but rather sinking it if they refuse to be boarded.....................jmho

As far as the three shots from the Seals. Those that were there said it was so close it actually sounded like only one shot was fired. Now that is about as good as it gets..................jmho

The movie is good but frankly, the real Captain Phillips bears a lot of the responsibility for what happened to his ship as I understand the facts.

You are correct in that the Captain on these large ships are like the "Company Man" on board a drilling rig and they are pressured by the owners to save fuel at all cost. Cutting corners and or mileage by running close to shore may save quite a bit in fuel.... But nevertheless Tom Hanks is a really good actor and I'll watch the show when I get the chance.

Just finished this movie a few minutes ago. Not my style of movie BUT......that may be oneof the best endings I've seen in a while.

"Execute." Thump, thump, thump.

I just skipped straight to the bottom of this thread in case of any spoilers. Just ordered it on DirecTv. Just waiting on her to get out of her nightly 40 minute damn shower!

I got to wondering a few days after watching. Is there any better way to protect a big ship like that from being boarded by pirates? I think maned water monitors with extreme pressure would be better than dozens of stationary nozzles just spraying around. I don't know anything about international maritime law but no weapons or security onboard? I know there is not much to do about a strike in the wheelhouse by an RPG but they just pulled up and hooked a ladder up to the railing. It seems to me that 1 or 2 men with rifles could have taken care of them. Maybe even placed a shot through the outboard engine. What do you think? Edited by glowdotGlock

I say coat the side of the ship and the deck with this:

But seriously, its what Wayne said:  "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun", Wayne LaPierre, NRA  2012

Good flick, the glass thing was funny. Being hungry Somali types I was hoping for some loaves of bread to be tossed out on deck so they could be thrown overboard w their mouths full ......

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2 of course it ate my spelling.

One redneck with a hundred dollar Mosin Nagant coulda changed this from a full length feature to a 10 minute infomercial.

***edit*** ACTUALLY, in the amount of time it took to over take the ship, two old farts with Kentucky flint locks coulda ended this.
I'd love to see what the international authorities would have to say about defending the ship with a couple 200+ year old muzzle loaders. LOL! Edited by Caster

The crew members have spoken out and agree with your impression of things.

I didn't care to see it based on the article you linked to. Maybe the interpretation was influenced by a $300K grant?
